TeaF2 - A Project For Rookie British Players

I've always wanted to play competitively but since I'm not good enough I'll be starting this,
I have come up with the idea for a small competitive league exclusively for British players nicknamed TeaF2 (Sorry for the pun). This league will be exclusively for players wishing to enter the competitive scene of TF2 and aims to introduce new teams into EU tournaments in both 6v6 and Highlander formats.
Due to a lack of equipment and funding this will not start as a fully livestreamed event with casters and analysts but rather as a small event hosted purely for encouraging new teams.
This league will be free to enter but offer no prize for the winners. Game dates will be changed to fit the schedules for the participating teams,
I am aiming for 8 teams for Highlander and 8 teams for 6v6 and whichever formats roster gets filled first will start first.
Note: This is only a concept and may not go ahead if very little interest is shown
But that is all I have to say, if you would like to participate please reply with a list of your players. And please even if you dont intend to compete, give some feedback on the idea and whether or not you think its worth it.

Running a league without any of the supporting infrastructure is really fucking hard and you seem to be underestimating how much work it is. A few things to consider:

Where are schedules published?

How are match scores reported?

How do you make sure no teams above the skill level you like are entered?

How will you keep track of rosters?

Really this is a lot of work and I don't think it's worth it.

etf2l is already a great European league and unless you offer golden turds to anyone that joins I don't think you can do any better than them.

Gargleburry, I know that this would never even get close to the grade that etf2l is, but this would mainly be for people who have no presence or experience in competitive TF2 to help them learn strategies and practice with their team. Think of it as a little league

That's what UGC is for though.

Omni, If you hadn't participated in a lobby before you would find it really hard to win games in UGC, so this is what this would be for

I don't see why a team would want to play in this and not just go into ETF2L or UGC and save messing about. Also the name is impossible to speak without people thinking you're talking about TF2. That's the killer right there.

I think the first thing someone hears about playing comp is that they should try out TF2Center,also how will you get people with no experience to join your league? Will you straight get them out of a pub? Also there is the Tier Open which is meant to be for players that have never played comp before, i dont know what would be different than playing Open in etf2l, just that you wont have such a good infrastructure

Putting puns ahead of utility is an admirable choice.

This is great. NZFortress did a similar thing a while ago called fresh meat league and it went really well, heaps of those players hung around for 3-4 years plus and quite a few still play today. ozfortress ran icebreakers, structured differently but similar idea, and same story, very high retention rate.

More power to you, with the small bracket size, you can easily do score reporting on challonge. Servers would be a concern, you can look at encouraging the use of serveme.tf, or you can look at getting a sponsorship from a server provider (potentially they could provide 3-6 months of server for the winner as well).

Keep it small and it should be manageable.

I really like this idea of having little sub open cups to give people a start in comp.

The one thing I would say is the open division is a huge range of skills (at least it is in ETF2L), you've got players who are literally fresh out of pubs and have no idea what's even happening all the way up to high div 5 teams, some of them with higher tier carries and people who are HL players messing around.

So yes you can play in open, but it's not the best way of learning the format unless you're ok with losing and I suspect most new players wouldn't be.

I dunno if I'm a fan of limiting it to British players thought but I don't know how active Hampshire heavies are but they used to be one of the largest UK based pub server networks, you should start looking for players there imo.

What infrastructure or staffing do you have to even regulate such a league

DanielnmOmni, If you hadn't participated in a lobby before you would find it really hard to win games in UGC, so this is what this would be for

But that's why you play. You play to get dicked on and then improve so you get dicked on less.

Sorry, although I like your enthusiasm, I don't see it working. We as a community have a ton of resources that already fill a lot of needs for newer players. More so now than ever. Newer players need to understand that they aren't going to win off the bat, and that's okay. If they truly want to get into comp, they'll put in the effort to get dicked on less and less each time. We can't bottle feed players too much or they'll never get good.

How do you plan to host the league/tournament?

What rulesets will you use?

What will be the experience cap?

Any prizes?

Where will you recruit?

Schedule?

Maps?

If you don't at least have some thought about how to handle these questions, you should quit now. I like the idea of like a UK based league but you see in EU most people can speak English, so it doesn't really work to exclude nationalities. If you did say a Russian newbie league, it'd be different as only Russian speaking countries would apply.

A comp league is quite a large project to manage, I wont say to give up because that goes against my nature. Either way, good luck

EDIT: Apparently people are still mad at me for eSource .-.
