What's that quote supposed to do?

Also
LGA1156 aka Socket H1 uses 75mm mounting hole spacing.
LGA1155 aka Socket H2 uses 75mm mounting hole spacing.
LGA1150 aka Socket H3 uses 75mm mounting hole spacing.
So either suddenly all cooler manufacturers have simultaneously dropped support for Intel platform or
LGA1151 aka Socket H4 is still using the same 75mm mounting hole spacing.
Take your guess.

i bought a 212 evo to cool my OC'd 2500k, but its too big and wont fit in my case.

1. Should I leave the case off, or not keep it on fully, with the cooler making one side stick out.
2. What's an equally effective cpu cooler that isnt as large as the 212evo.

LGA 1155 im pretty sure.

thanks

I have a GTX 750, and I was wondering what CPU that is <$80 that I can pair it with. I had the G3258 and the 860K Black Edition in my mind.

I should also mention that I really only play TF2 and CSGO.

Why not a more effective and quieter cooler?
Cryorig H7.
It's just a guess though because you didn't tell us which case/height clearance.

Yes it's LGA1155, but you don't need to worry about cooler compatibility anyway since there hasn't been a socket with new dimensions for the past 6 years.

#667
G3258 and overclock it.

Budget and which games on which settings are you going to be playing?
Overclocking yes or no?

Budget ~ around $1800. I just want recommendations on those parts that match the build I already have.
Games: New games at max settings.
no overclocking.

Resolution, which games and how much fps are you going for (e.g. 60 or 144fps)?
I was about to do a build anyway, but then I saw your edit.

I am confused now.

Btw you're wasting at least 200$ with the current parts.

can you show the build you made up before you saw the edit and tell me what parts im wasting on? thanks for the advice. 1920x1080. max quality 60fps at the least, more than that would definitely be a plus but not absolutely necessary.

my friend asked for a build, no real specifics, he just wanted to "play games at max settings with good fps"
he's mainly a casual (minecraft, dota, tf2 pubber) but he said he wanted to play other games like battlefront
one thing: he wants a gaming mouse and a 'good' monitor (he hasn't specified what he means by good) and also wants to stay below $1000, so i need help cutting parts
the cpu combo is from microcenter

CPU: No overclocking so no need for K, no streaming just gaming so no need for i7.
RAM: You don't need 16GB for gaming.
HDD: Spending twice the money on an HDD with 50% higher power consumption and that's only faster in 4K write and only by ~1MB/s is questionable. When you've got an SSD that does 140-350MB/s 4K write putting anything where 4K writes matter on an HDD that crawls along with 3MB/s just doesn't make any sense anyway, so why buy an HDD based on that performance.
GPU: 980 Ti would be possible but imho overkill. 390X is an option if you want to save some money. Are you going to overclock the GPU? Also I'm a bit concerned with the VRM temps on the EVGA 980.
Monitor: XL2411Z is 50$ cheaper. You lose:
-A DP and a HDMI port, which you would've never used since the monitor comes with a DVI cable and your GPU got DVI too.
-USB 2.0 ports. 2.0
-a wired remote for the OSD.
If you think that's worth 50$ go ahead and get the XL2420Z, but I don't think so.

Keyboard: Do you really need RGB LEDs?

Without knowing what the "gaming mouse" and "'good' monitor" cost I can't tell wether it's actually a 500$ or 800$ budget for the pc. Without any specifics I can't give you a specific build, but I think a "good" CPU and a "decent" GPU should be enough to get "good" fps. Did that help you? Didn't think so. Also you probably shouldn't cut parts.

i've spoken to my friend a few more times and he wants to play games like battlefront/witcher 3 at 60 fps on max settings, so i suggested a regular tn panel. he also wants a deathadder and thinks he'll overclock his cpu. i don't know what for, but it's why i chose the cpu/mobo combo. i'll ask him again later what specifically he needs to overclock for.

when i said cut parts, i meant downgrading, such as going from 970 to a 280x or not getting an overclockable cpu.
he says that below $1000 is fine, but the lower the better

Yeah, I won't touch this one (yet).
If he's fine with 60fps the logical conclusion isn't TN panel, it's 60Hz panel.
A Deathadder, that really narrows it down, doesn't it?

But let's ignore the budget uncertainties. Let's assume a 1000$ budget.
Battlefront on max, 1080p, 60fps is 285/380 or 770 territory, 280X absolutely no problems and easily within budget.
Witcher 3 on the other hand you're lucky if an oc'd 980 stays above 60fps.
In other words: Not happening.

sorry for being uninformed, I don't really play anything besides tf2

he mainly plays fps and mobas, so I don't think he'll actually play witcher, so you can disregard that. Battlefront or other similarly intensive games will probably be the extent of his gaming.

as for the mouse, I really don't know much, but any high end mouse (decent sensor) with more than 2 programmable buttons should be good

Ive approached him about ips or 120hz but he seems pretty indifferent, so any 60hz monitor is fine

Hey setsul what build can you recommend for 350-400 dollars as a basic workstation with maybe a decent amount of Photoshop/photo editing?

Its for a friend and he's also into audio, so can any of you guys recommend a soundcard or DAC/amp combo for him? He would like to use it with a surround sound system if possible, and there isn't really any set price he has for that stuff, he just wants to look into it and maybe he'll spend a few hundred on it in the future.

I was thinking it would almost certainly have integrated graphics.

No monitor and os necessary

Or a µATX Skylake build because probably won't go Crossfire/SLI anyway so there's no need for full ATX.

Skylake i3 and Pentium availability is still basically nonexistent sadly.

5.1/7.1? Are we talking about a preamp?

Oh I forgot to post this.

He doesn't need another amp, just a 6 channel DAC.
Not sure if you'll find someone in this forum, especially in the pc build thread, who could recommend you one.

In a bit of a sticky situation and need advice. My motherboard died after 7 years, and I want to hopefully replace as little as possible as I don't have a budget to build a new PC. Do you think I can upgrade my mobo and ram while keeping everything else? It's all pretty old so I'm unsure of compatibility issues with new hardware.

I only play TF2, and primarily jump, DM, or bball, so I can usually run 120+ frames. I'm not too concerned about 120 in pubs but dropping below 60 wouldn't be ideal.

Specs:
Intel Core2 Duo E8400 3.0Ghz
nvidia geforce 9800gtx
Gigabyte ep45-ud3r (dead)
4Gb DDR2 ram (assuming this will need to be DDR3)
Thermaltake 600W PSU

Is it even worth upgrading the dead parts? Or do I just bite the bullet and start a whole new build?

If you want to reuse your CPU you'd need an LGA775 motherboard, I doubt you'll find a good one at a reasonable price though, I've been searching for one too.

kezzzIs it even worth upgrading the dead parts?

Multiple?

If you don't want a used mobo you're looking at >100$, for that you can easily get the cheapest Haswell CPU (Celeron G1840, 37$) which is faster than your E8400, a mobo and 4GB RAM.

So I don't think keeping the CPU and RAM will do you any good. You can still keep the GPU for a while, but if you decide to go for a bigger upgrade on the CPU it will be a major bottleneck.

I'm thinking it would be a waste of resources to replace low end parts. I hate to be that guy but is there a pretty standard cheap build for TF2 these days? Is it possible to get 120 fps (with lowest settings - I actually like DX8) for a few hundred bucks? A mobo, processor, ram, and gpu specifically.

Thanks a ton btw Setsul; you're advice in this thread is amazing.
