Do you play on your parents toaster? No problem!
Do you get 20 FPS on average? No problem!
Do you want to enjoy playing TF2? No problem!

This is a guide to get THE BEST FPS your toaster can give.

Note: Your graphics will look absolutely horrible.

For people who care: I decided to go with Comanglias Stability config instead of toaster/potato config be cause i personally didnt get any extra fps from potato config, and i
seriously play on a toaster with a screen attached to it.

My PC:

RAM: 2x 2GB Sticks (only 3.25GB of that is usable)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 2.13 GHz
Random motherboard i found in my attic
Windows 7

As you can see my PC is a potato.
I am currently building a new gaming pc but 'till then i use this crap of a pc.

Let's start:

1.If you use Windows, set it to High Performance mode.

Control Panel > Power Options > High Performance.

2. Set the Windows theme to Max Performance.

Right Click on desktop > Personalize > Choose the "old-looking" theme.

3. Open your Steam libary > Right click on Team Fortress 2 > Set launch options... > Paste this in:
-dxlevel 80 -nod3d9ex -console -w 1280 -h 720 -full -novid

4. Copy this: http://pastebin.com/4WeNveLb

This is Comanglia Stability config + Blocky Textures + I removed network settings.
The reason i removed network settings is be cause if people have bad PCs they usually have bad network so i didnt wanna mess with anything.
I hope you understand my point.
To Comanglia: I hope you don't mind me modifying your config.

To install:

Go to where you installed Steam > steamapps > common > Team Fortress 2 > tf > cfg > save it here as autoexec.cfg, !!!*** PUT "ALL FILES" ***!!! otherwise it won't work.

5. Copy: http://pastebin.com/tWMVynL2

To install:

Go to where you installed Steam > steamapps > common > Team Fortress 2 > tf > custom > make a folder called: my_custom_stuff > in it make a folder: scripts > save it here as surfaceproperties.txt (**DONT** put all files)

6. Download: http://www.mediafire.com/download/mfmstj878u4383r/hrblsnohat.28.08.2015.vpk

To install:

Go to where you installed Steam > steamapps > common > Team Fortress 2 > tf > custom > and put the file here.

This removes hats btw. Yes, it boosts fps but if you truly love hats like me you don't have to do this.

7. Download: http://tf2.gamebanana.com/sprites/download/5309 !!!CLICK ***LOCAL COPY***!!!

To install:

Go to where you installed Steam > steamapps > common > Team Fortress 2 > tf > custom > and put the file here.

8. Download: https://mega.nz/#!EgJRTBJZ!2obYj4zGLS26sJKCiGJgz2KpAPLlbVXBEyty3FKLUsw !!!CLICK DOWNLOAD THROUGHT BROWSER BUTTON!!!

To install:

go to your my_custom_stuff folder > scripts > place the .txt files in here.

Well. Good job. You are now a true soldier.
Go start your TF2 and check how much more FPS you now have.

Thanks to Comanglia and all the script makers.

That will depend on specifications and setup, which is why I asked for benchmarks. Also your lack of network settings doesn't make any sense. Even if you have bad internet the default options are still horrendous. Also you made some claims that I would consider unsubstantiated: such as the no hats mod boosting fps. The creator of the mod claims it doesn't really and is mainly aesthetic. If it does for you I'd love to see some benchmarks. People always throw around tons of claims surrounding fps configs and peoples' computers always seem to have minute differences in what affects performance the most. Without actual proof for your claims I'm not going to switch from Comanglia's toaster config to his stability one, that doesn't make any sense, especially if your only justification is that it should run better.

The nohatsmod does increase FPS although some people do use it for purely aesthetic reasons.

I was just looking through the benchmarks thread and I was wrong, yeah, the benchmarks there indicate a 8~11% increase, my fault. I would still like to see benchmarks for his justification of Comanglia's stability over Toaster. Also would like an explanation on net settings, his logic doesn't make sense to me. At the least I think he should provide different sensible settings for people to choose from or test.

Maybe, just maybe, if people have a REALLY bad computer, the potato/toaster config may help them.
I am not bashing on Comanglias potato config, but the Stability config has better graphics and is truly better.
This is just my opinion.

Why is your edit of the config so contradictory in one line says sv_cheats 1 and then a couple of lines down it says sv_cheats 0 and that happend to a couple of commands xD.

the surfaceproperties.txt barely gives you any fps, custom particles don't work on competitive servers and -dxlevel 81 has been proven to be more stable than -dxlevel 80

This will be much more better if the screen resolution is 4:9 it will give additional fps boost for the game and make the game easier to run

Just throwing it out there, you can run tf2 on dx7 through some weird method (the hassle of getting it is not worth it anyway) but the FPS gain is not noticeable from my experience, and I too play on a toaster. I didn't notice any difference except particles (like the scout's trail while under bonk) is blocky. Plus some community servers disallow anything below dx8.

Actually I was perfectly happy with just dx81 and a config until I noticed conspicuous lag whenever I looked closely at a bullet dust object. I don't think a benchmark.dem would capture this difference but it's made my game feel considerably smoother and I would definitely recommend the script to anyone looking to improve performance.

Epicpie11I'm not good with any of this, so what does pellyx mean when he wrote !!!*** PUT "ALL FILES" ***!!! in the autoexec.cfg and how do you put it in?

it means save as all files so that it actually saves as a .cfg and not a .cfg.txt

But this guide is really old and outdated and you'd be better off just downloading everything from their actual threads. Comanglia's can be found here: http://www.teamfortress.tv/25328/comanglia-s-config-fps-guide
