coming soon?

Dear Partners,

Tomorrow, May 14, we will be releasing an option to reduce the delay experienced during a broadcast by an average of 33%! You will find the reduced delay option in your Settings page.

If you regularly interact with your fans in chat, we encourage you to help us test this feature. With reduced delay, you’ll spend less time waiting for replies and more time engaging with your community. You can opt-in at any time, but reduced delay must be turned on prior to the beginning of a broadcast in order to take effect.

Please note that this feature is in beta while we measure its impact. It’s important to know that reduced delay does come at a small quality of service cost - particularly to viewers with poor internet connections. Some viewers may experience changes in playback, with shorter, more frequent buffering times. Because less video is queued on a viewer’s computer, they will be more susceptible to variations in download bandwidth, and may experience more interruptions in service while video buffers. Rather than require every channel to switch to the reduced delay option, we’re leaving it up to you to decide what is best for you and your community.

This is very exciting. Just so people get an idea, the average delay I've seen on most streams is about 12 seconds. So this would mean going from about 12 to 8 (for most cases, not all)

Still significant, still great, and a step in the right direction. As a caster, I long for the days when I could see specifically what my cameraman was showing viewers.

The delay on my stream is more like 35 seconds, it's ridiculous. Great step forward from Twitch assuming it works and doesn't just make everyone's stream buffer all the time.

Originally they were going to make it for only partners, but it appears they've changed their mind and decided to make it public to everyone.

According to Hassan's Twitter:

Just a correction to my previous tweet (https://twitter.com/BackwardsNinja/status/598597453659508737 …). This feature will go live for everyone tomorrow :). More to come tomorrow!

Giant streams with flooded chat can still make their video (the primary reason for watching) the total priority, while small streams can have a better interaction experience. This is a great move!

That seems like an extreme outlier. Although I'll admit, I'm not sure if I've checked delays for people connecting to Euro servers. How often have you measured it?

EDIT: Just looked at 6 different streams in Euro countries and the highest delay I saw was 15 seconds. YOU GOT ISSUES MATE

"Because less video is queued on a viewer’s computer, they will be more susceptible to variations in download bandwidth, and may experience more interruptions in service while video buffers."

Not my decision, but I don't see it being worth it for TFTV to use this for casts depending on how bad the above issues are.

Would the quality options not fix that issue for tftv?

I realize it's not back to the way it was yet. I just long for those days. Hopefully they keep going.

it's going to be for partners only initially

they are testing it on partners first as a beta test, and then they are releasing it for everyone else
