Saw this on the sidebar of my Facebook where all the recent news updates show up. This something to get excited about?

Facebook tracks what you liked and what pages you follow promote, giving you more ads on those. No extra promotion than before.

I'm pretty sure these are often target-based, so not the same for everyone. I could be wrong though.

It's definitely not all target-based. I barely use facebook and my news feed is a ton of shit I've never liked or cared about. TF2 did show up for me though. I think it's mostly what's overall trending on Facebook, like twitter.

If you barely use Facebook it might just not have good targeting

As someone else mentioned, the reason there's a ton of stuff that you don't like or care about is because Facebook doesn't have enough data on you to properly suggest things. Every person's trending list will look a little different based on links you click, friends you interact with, pages you like, and a ton of other factors that Facebook tracks.

As somebody who works in the advertising space (and performs targeting on Facebook), I would just like to point out that the trending stories feed is NOT targetable by advertisers. However, that isn't to say to say that Facebook doesn't do algorithmic filtering of their own based on your data.

So you're saying that you're the reason I sometimes see Honey Boo-Boo on my news feed, Zach?

*actually it's probably all the reality tv obsessed girls I'm friends with. I'm sure I only get Spongebob from Foster.

I very rarely use facebook...I logged in after probably a year and ended up being curious and looked at my actual page. Apparently facebook was listing to my friends my "favorite movies, tv shows, and favorite books" that I had never read or watched at all and had never filled in on the site.

A few were political enough that who knows maybe some of my more distant friends even judged me by them, lol.

tl;dr: You may want to check if facebook is listing your favorite book is meinkampf. Creepy company.

PheeshApparently facebook was listing to my friends my "favorite movies, tv shows, and favorite books" that I had never read or watched at all and had never filled in on the site.

You might want to change your password. Facebook doesn't auto-fill stuff on your profile (though they do offer wildly inaccurate suggestions).

EDIT: I found this

The spam sites have a mechanism to add unwanted likes. The 'like' button is hidden on the page and follows your cursor, so whenever you click, you're actually hitting a 'like' button and adding an unwanted page to your fb.
