Some people have more natural talent, or have a history of playing FPS games. Most people just don't put the practice time in. I know I could practice more, but playing in IM/Invite is less important to me than just playing the game for fun and being "good" just means playing well for my crappy teams. I think a lot of open players feel the same way.

The competition's better in open and some people kinda like having high-level leagues around.

Plus, with payment, everyone knows what they're doing and you don't get matched up versus dumb teams that run two pyros to mid, lose 5-0 in under 10 minutes, and wonder why, making you have wasted a week.
