I was challenged by a friend to play all of Nightmare House with all the lights off.

Fuck you Kyle.

Outlast is ok if you like jump scares I guess. It's kinda neat but I got bored with it personally. I loved Penumbra and it basically does what Outlast does but way better. Or really Outlast does what Penumbra did but way worse. Amnesia: The Dark Descent is also really good (don't get Machine for Pigs though it's garbage). You could always go back to the classics and play Silent Hill 1, 2, and 3. The Resident Evil 1 remake on gamecube and wii is also really good and probably one of the few Resident Evil games that is actually scary, but it's going to get an HD re-release for PC and all of the current relevant consoles so you could just wait for that. I love horror games but there honestly aren't that many good recent ones that aren't either full of jump scares or just fad streamer/youtuber bait games like Slender, SCP, and Five Nights at Freddy's. Also look into The Evil Within, it looks like it's going to be a really good horror game when it comes out in a few months.

Five Nights at Freddy's is a fun horror game I've been playing recently, it's only about 4bucks on steam right now. It's all pretty much cheap jump scares but I don't regret buying it, the game mechanics are interesting

Penumbra: Overture was the only one I played and it was really good, I'd say go for them and the first Amnesia, like Munch said the 2nd one is rubbish.

if you've already played the main story of amnesia but want more, i highly recommend this custom story
http://www.moddb.com/mods/key-to-freedom
it's easily the best i've ever played in terms of story, scares, atmosphere, visuals, etc. look at its rating too like holy shit

MurowCry of fear is pretty good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-VshLGXP8E

on topic there really isn't that many good true horror games outside the ones mentioned in the thread

there are games that have scary scenes like vampire the masquerade or thief deadly shadows but they aren't horror games

year walk got good reviews and it's on steam, but you might want to check out videos and see if it's your thing

Alan Wake is p cool if you are a fan of Stephen King/John Carpenter stuff although I wouldn't describe it as scary.

I'd say sometimes i've had a couple moments that scared me while playing.
No spoilers ;)

No game has ever given me a bigger sense of unease as SS2.
