, i think the curve for buying levels isn't as steep?
also you can basically go around the entire game and never beat that boss, so that might also be the case

any tips for the smelter demon? i do fine until his sword goes all firey and shit and then he just does a shitload of damage through my shield and i basically have 0 chances to heal because he just does the long range fire attack and i get one shot. i got a +7 halberd and an unupgraded drangleic shield at sl80, am i under levelled for this area?
also personally i never farm stuff just for souls in any of the souls games, and in this game the only farming i did was for human effigies

i wouldn't say you're underleveled.

i've had a lot more success dodging hit attacks rather than blocking them, also smelter demon takes a buttload of counter hit damage, meaning if you hit him while he's in his attack animation he'll take a lot more damage than if he were just standing still

Also, off the top of my head, I believe they raised the average SL for completion of the game to be higher because of more stats needed a higher dependency on souls put in them to be effective. There's just more to choose and little to gain if you sprinkle points everywhere. Gotta have 3-4 primary stats by level 150 or your build is probably going to blow ass.

Before you go into the boss room there's a ledge where you can climb up to (where one of the archers is) and use a Pharros' Lockstone to make a pool of water. Roll through it and proceed to the boss. You take reduced fire damage when wet. Otherwise get your equip load under 30% or 50% so you get the roll that gets you farther away so you have a better chance of dodging his close up attacks.

If you go to the Doors of Pharros you can kill the Gyrm warriors with the shields until you get the Gyrm Greatshield. It does 100% block on physical AND fire, making the fight a matter of waiting for the right attack. Note you need pretty high strength (around the 30's if I remember correctly) to use it.

and it seems as though some hits that are just blatantly missing are catching me.
PS blocked a guy into a corner and let the enemies rain arrows on him as he desperately R1'd my shield to try and get out and then did the Mock gesture over and over until it kicked me out after I won. I got what I assume to be hate mail but it's in Japanese or something. Pretty fun.

honestly Dark Souls 2 is entirely playable with kb/m, i still just prefer a controller for it though.

DS2 is miles ahead of DS1 as far as ports go, but it still remains a laughable mess if you use keyboard/mouse.
Thing is, the DS universe is too fucking amazing to let controls get in the way of experiencing the game, so I eventually found a control scheme that will work for me. I do hope they release a patch that, at the very least, does not display xbox buttons for how to navigate through the menus. I have yet to do a successful guard break or jump attack, since the "tutorial" at the start only offers advice for people with controllers.

Effigies don't affect designated PvP areas like the Belfry. There's no real way around it other than going in offline mode, in which case you lose everything else associated with playing online.
