So my phone just died recently(prepaid virgin mobile Optimus Elite) and I need to get a new one soon, but I really don't know much of anything about phones or service plans and what have you. Does anyone have any advice/information about the best phones and what service providers/plans to get?

Are you looking for a smart phone? simplicity or customizability? Budget? What are the three things you want most from your phone?

I had been planning to buy the Samsung Galaxy S5, but after reading reviews that say it's NOT blazing fast hardware-wise, I'm a little worried..

Yeah a smartphone would be nice, also having decent web surfing/data bandwidth capabilities would be preferred, although not necessary. I would however need a microsd slot or some sort of expandable memory

If you're wanting a high end phone and don't mind spending some money get the HTC One M8. If you're not wanting to spend that much then I would recommend either the Moto G or the Nexus 5.

Unfortunately i've no idea which carriers/rate plans are best in the US.

with my galaxy s4, I can take off the back and put in a microSD thingy in, but if you want a simple phone I dont think it would be the best for you

I've got an iPhone 5s as my first real smartphone. It's great for what I need, plus jailbreaking adds a bunch of stuff. I know many people don't like Apple for reasons but nonetheless, this phone is a good phone.

I would recommend the HTC One M8 from what I've heard though. I've read many reviews of it and it is fairly praised. Good luck finding a phone. :)

I've got a Samsung Galaxy S4, and it's pretty incredible. Can't go wrong with most of the new gen smart phones especially if you haven't upgraded in a while.

Please just get a Nexus 5

The build quality on Samsung phones is terrible and the skin they throw on Android is also awful

Disagreeing with you on the Samsung thing, my S3 has held up fine for 2 years now, but I will agree that the Nexus 5 is a better option.

You could also root your phone for just better performance overall, but it voids warranty so just be wary. Would still recommend it though, custom roms are the shit.

simple mobile + any unlocked smartphone with 1900 mhz WCDMA assuming you live in the US

simple mobile uses AT&T/T mobile towers so service is great, its $40 a month for 2gb data + unlimited text/phone, you bring your own phone so its up to your budget.

nexus 5 is a good phone for the price, motorola's new phones are nice for the price too

if your looking for something super cheap that will just work you can get a chinese phone for around $120 that will have a 5 inch touch screen camera etc running android

I have to disagree. After my Nexus4 cracked, insurance provided me with an S3, I hate it! The battery life is horrible and never seen a phone so picky about chargers. I got bought another Nexus4 and the it cracked again, so I'm back on an S3 :(

Pretty sure they use T-Mobile towers, at least when I had it.

if youre looking to save money on the phone itself buy the "old" model smart phones which are fine (i have a droid 3 that was free when i renewed my contract and its been working great for 2+ years without any protective case on it) and it'll be $10 or free if you're willing to spend ~5 min haggling

My last 2 phones have been iPhones. The 3Gs, and now the iPhone 5. As an iPhone user I urge you to stay away. iPhones are great when you jailbreak them, but apple is making it harder and harder to jailbreak. When the iPhone 5 first came out it was running iOS 6 out of the box and it took FOREVER for a jailbreak to arrive. I'm still running iOS 6 because of the stable jailbreak. When I'm eligible for a new phone I'm going with an android, probably the galaxy s5

I recently got a phone(motorola g, nice phone & price but no sd) with this plan and it's really nice if you don't have a family to subsidize plan costs and still want decent data. I used to use virgin's 35$ month thing and this is cheaper and HUGE step up speed and service wise.

iPhone 5s

Like all these androids are cool and all but, they honestly don't compare with the compatibility and features the iPhones get nowadays.

What features are those? Low res screen? No external storage? No replaceable battery?

If you want a cool case for a phone the Dot View Case (for the HTC One M8) is a really useful (and good looking!) one.

Features highlighted here.
