hey guys, its plobs.
many of these threads in the mentoring section i've seen have been based off of ESEA/high CEVO tf2 players.

now most of you after reading this i can guarantee will mention something like 'ugc forums is the place to go get help'.
WELP

now I'm not going to lie, I'm currently leading a Iron 6v6 team in ugc. Yes, I am aware this is the lowest level of competitive team fortress 2.

I get quite a bit of practice in, and scrim at least once a night since the season started.
I've noticed many of the better teams that play this game, excel not because of dm, but because of pure comms and positioning.

therefore, I would greatly appreciate it if someone could teach me more advanced game sense, then I already know. Though I play in iron and I'm aware the competition is not the greatest, I still feel like my comms and game sense seem to be stagnant for the last bit and it would be pretty cool if someone could get me off my feet.

some strategies that would be cool include going over STV demos/practicing in general with higher level players.
I've read a couple really handy articles but they don't really seem to transfer into my actual gameplay.

like i said, i've tried to find some ugc level mentors, but yeah. thought i'd just throw this our there!

btw : thanks to marxist http://teamfortress.tv/thread/10754/?page=1 that was really helpful

Hi plobs.

I don't know if I'd have time to get into specifics, but roaming can be summed up pretty well:

  • Don't take up heals
  • Support your scouts
  • Only go for a bomb when your team is ready
  • Grabbing the attention of 2+ players on the other team is just as effective as killing someone

It would also help if you identify your key problems that happen often. If you die while holding then you're probably overextended. If you die bombing in without getting much done, work on your jumps. If you get denied by scouts a lot, your timing is off and you need your team to open something up for you.

Seriously, don't hog your med. Health packs are your med, and only ask for heals if bombing or need a buff

i think a lot of the time i need my team to open some things up for me before i do decide to 'bomb' in and go for a med pick/force/distraction for a uber entrance.

thanks for the tips btw!

I would say the two biggest things for roamer would be: 1) understanding when it's the right time to go be a big idiot all alone or when to fall back and just stay alive and 2) having confidence in your scouts/your scouts having confidence in you.

Random example: Say you have 80 hp and you're a rocket jump away from a health pack. At the same time, you notice your friendly scout is fighting another scout on your teams turf. Even though you're low enough to get one shot and there is a tantalizing health pack only seconds away, you should probably rj over and help a brother out. Even though you really don't have enough health to do much, that enemy scout doesn't know so he'll probably continue trying to fight your friendly scout and die to your rockets. In the extra time you take to grab health your friendly scout might win the fight, but he could lose it just as easily if you're not there. tl;dr Pussyitis (chrome isn't telling me to spell check that I'm rollin with it) is the leading cause of Roamer Deficiency.

"I've noticed many of the better teams that play this game, excel not because of dm, but because of pure comms and positioning."
although roamer is one of the less dm intensive roles in 6v6, dm and mechanics are just as important as comms/gamesense

i think i have better dm then game sense by far, which seems to be holding me back at times.

Honestly I would disagree, it's hard to predict stupid.

Make sure to be as much of a nuisance to your own team as possible

Bomb into the enemy without letting anyone know, then complain when you die that no one helped you

clutter up the mumble with lots of useless calls(wtf how did that miss/omg my dm is so bad today/holy shit I should've hit that airshot)

Every now and then, hit a nice airshot and then gloat about it for the next 15 min

i stumbled across a great VOD that i must have missed when it was streamed, but seagull reviewed his POV demo on process vs. iT in season 15's LAN finals.

it's a little over an hour, but informative and educational. notice how he speaks a lot about: crit heals, overheals, ammo management, vantage spam points, holding an area without committing, etc.

this is just a little minor tip: learn to ctap, it can give you the extra height and length on your bombs so that you can get the picks.

By the way, don't let anyone convince you that roamer is a class where DM doesn't matter as much (and by DM, I don't mean the ability to win MGE). You have less heals, less support, and often less weapons than any other class. If you wanna be that roamer who does "ok I guess" every game and "it's fine cause he's playing roamer" - well, by all means, do that. But if you wanna be a roamer who is actually an asset to his team, you gotta have the DM and the versatility to make miracles happen out of thin air.

idk the hardest roamers to play against are the ones that are the biggest retards

the easiest ones are those who think theyre fucking brilliant, though
