Yes, seriously. Most of the article just reeks of cluelessness, misinformation, and underhanded jabs at the legitimacy of gaming being more than just a hobby.

Disgusting.

rofl it's a newspaper what do you want?

He's just writing to the kind of people who would actually read an online news source for an understanding of the culture around video games

This. Don't expect anyone to have an inside look or full understanding on everything.
Exposure is exposure! I bet he was happy about it regardless of how silly it was.

this is not terribly written at all. It may seem like it because we know how twitch works and such, but to a reader of the boston globe that is not interested in that it gave a very good overview and explanation

Actual research? I mean, goddamn. The oversimplification of everything may be easier to digest if you have no understanding of it at all, but it doesn't paint an even remotely accurate picture of what it's supposed to be about, so the purpose of the article (to provide insight into a culture you're not familiar with) is ultimately for naught.

what's wrong with it

like yeah the guy who doesn't understand video games obviously, but worse articles have been made

It’s a lot of work; Serge recently spent about 20 hours creating a seven-minute video.

Not really sure about these statistics....

That number wouldn't surprise me at all. Gathering footage, hunting for good parts, & editing everything together + adding little touches can easily take 20 hours for a 7 minute video. 20 hours is actually a decently fast turnaround for a video of that length.

Why he's youtube superstar, I think the longest I took to make any of my videos was a 5 minute long PSA for an envi-sci class that took maybe 1-2 hours.

I know star doesn't exactly want to get too deeply into competitive for the sake of his videos, but if he released a couple videos of his scrims/matches now and then I'd imagine it'll attract quite a few pubbers into 6v6.

because he attracts the casual tf2 players which is the high majority of this game

This article seems very shallow. It was as if the author was judging him the whole time.

I know a professional video editor, he works at a rate of an hour per minute of edited video.

Yeah but STAR isn't a professional video editor so ~170 minutes per minute of video is quite good.

"Serge won’t say how much he earns, but it pays for his high-end computer gear, his apartment not far from Boston’s Prudential Center, and nights out with his girlfriend."

sounds like the time spent editing is reasonably justified.
