Looking to upgrade build - Recommendations?

Hey guys, after a year with my current setup, I decided that I'm not getting nearly the performance I'd like out of the PC that I was hoping for when I built my PC a year ago and would like to change that. I'm aware that it's my CPU that's really holding me down here, so the main thing I'm looking to upgrade is that (and probably have to get a new mobo too, since I'm most likely going to be switching from AMD to intel), but if you have any advice/recommendations as to what else might be good to do, feel free to let me know.

Here's my current setup:

-Motherboard - Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
-CPU - AMD FX-8350 @ 4.1GHz
-GFX - SPARKLE GTX 680 2GB
-Memory - 8GB g.skill Sniper Series (2x4GB) 1866
-Monitor - Acer GD235HZ, 120Hz (primary) + Asus VE245, 60Hz (secondary)
-Headphones - Audiotechnica ATH-M50s
-Microphone - Antlion Modmic 3.0
-Mouse - Razer DeathAdder 2013 edition
-Mousepad - Generic OCZ mousepad
-Keyboard - Logitech G710+ (brown switches)
-Cooling - Corsair H80i Liquid Cooling

I use Chris' dx9frames and I currently get around ~120-140fps on average (when in a midfight/pub) when I'm not streaming, and anywhere from 70-120fps on average when streaming. If possible, I'd like to be able to get a solid 240+ fps regardless of whether or not I'm streaming. I feel like the majority of my PC is pretty solid though, so I'm not looking to rebuild everything - Just make a minor tweak to increase performance.

I don't really have a budget, but I don't really want to spend more than about $300-350 on a new CPU/mobo combo if possible.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks ahead of time! :3

Clean your case, defrag your HDD, delete pointless crap. That build should do its job fine, how are other games?

Games that are more GPU intensive, (Planetside 2, Just Cause 2, etc.) are all fine for the most part. Also I'll go ahead and do those things, but I've been getting this type of performance since day 1; I'm sure that a defrag + clean will help things a bit; but I don't think I've ever had consistently over 200fps unless I was in a surf/jump server.

Well newer intel cpus do have a lot better single core performance numbers over AMD's stuff.

I'm guessing since you stream you want an i7, if you really want to switch. No idea about the prices in murica:/

I've got a high end AMD rig like yours and have also been seeing if its feasible to switch over to intel. The price of the 4770k is just so high that your going to spending 400+ with that cpu and any decent mobo no matter what (unless you are lucky as hell and got a microcenter near you). Right now the gigabyte z87x ud3h is apparently the best band for your buck z87 board out there, seen some pretty good overclocks on it. At pcpartpicker prices that combo is 470 though, could probably go i5 to get it under 400 though.

If you can wait until Q3 (maybe later :/) of this year, Intel's new Broadwell architecture will be out but if you want an upgrade now, then you're looking at Haswell.

Sticking within a $350 budget can't be done unless you're willing to lose overclocking potential
Intel i5 4670: $220
Gigabyte H87 D3H: $105
Total: $325
Another option is the i5 4570 ($200) and a Gigabyte Z87 UD3H ($160), total $360 but Z87 boards don't offer much over H87 boards if you aren't overclocking.

If you really want overclocking potential:
Intel i5 4670k: $240 (on Newegg right now, normal price is $250)
Gigabyte Z87 UD3H: $160
Total: $400

If you really want the extra streaming performance and can spend more, a 4770k will benefit you over a 4670k although you won't really notice any difference in games
Intel i7 4770k: $340 (normal price $350)
Gigabyte Z87 UD3H: $160
Total: $500
Although with the above set up, I'd personally spend $30 more and go for the UD4H over the UD3H

Edit: If you don't want/can't get a Gigabyte board then pretty much any Asus or MSI motherboard will do you fine at the same price point. Asrock has a bit of a reputation but I haven't really heard anything negative about their newer boards.

You might want to look further into the cause of your performance. I have a GTX570, and the same CPU @ stock. I've never dipped below my FPS cap of 200, (I haven't streamed much, but I believe it was more than fine while streaming as well). Have you tried reformatting recently?

There is no need for a fancy mainboad and K-CPU unless you plan to overclock your CPU.

I have an Asrock H87 with a 4670K and I get maybe 150 fps on mids, 120 in pubs and 180-190 on outside fights so that's not really what you were looking for. I have a gtx 650ti though and I guess that might be why.

also this is dx8

Upgrade the 650ti and you're good. If you have spare money after that go for a Z87 board (I'm assuming you'll need better cooling too) so you can overclock the 4670k.

According to downpour, who had a really similar build to yours and terrible FPS, installing an SSD helped his frames a ton too.

It might not affect your FPS so much, but if you don't already have an SSD I strongly suggest getting one. It'll speed loading times on pretty much everything and the general usage of the computer will be way snappier.

I could try a reformat; but as I said above I've always averaged about this. I suppose I could check to make sure everything is mounted/installed properly within the case, though. I'll have to check that out.

I actually had the game on an SSD for awhile, but moved it off because demos/custom maps were eating all of the space on it. The only difference I noticed when I took it off was longer load times, no visible boost in performance.

As for whether or not I'd overclock, I suppose I probably would - I have a decent cooler, so it'd be silly to not put it to use. However, from my attempts to OC my 8350 I could never get a stable OC, so maybe there's an issue with my cooler of some sort?

Thanks for the quick input, guys!

This is disheartening. I just ordered this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487028

Will this not give me 150 fps consistently? I come from an ati Radeon 3870 so I figured any new card will give me good fps since I was getting 60-70 before. I also just got the i7 4770k with this card, please don't tell me it's still not enough. I think I get it today or tomorrow

It is true that for TF2, a CPU with strong single threaded performance is very useful, but for everything else a strong GPU is much more worthwhile, and the strongest CPU in the world won't give you anything in TF2 if you don't have the GPU power to back it up. Whilst the 750ti isn't a bad card, it's ridiculously good for the price, you'd have been much better off with a 4670k (saving $100 on the CPU) and putting that $100 towards a better GPU. A general rule of thumb is to not spend more on your CPU than your GPU, especially not more than twice as much. The 750ti will do you perfectly fine, but you could have done better. On the bright side, you have a strong base to upgrade on in the future; given the recent improvements since even the original core series CPUs (the one before sandybridge, I forget what it's called), the 4770k will last you a long while.

Did a bit more research and found that I could get the i5-4670k and the Z87-UD3H for ~$350 on Amazon, so I think that'll be my best bet.

Again, I appreciate all of the input guys. Assuming everything goes well and all that, I might be selling my FX-8350 in a few weeks to someone who might be able to make better use of it and appreciate it a bit more than I did. It still worked more than okay for just playing the game; it just didn't ever seem to be quite at the level I was looking for when I was streaming.

I'm almost certain your current processor is performing at least as well as the 4670k for streaming performance.

Are you sure you want to drop $350 on a processor for an unknown and probably marginal benefit?

While the FPS drop I get while streaming is actually pretty minimal, because the FX-8350 has such poor single-core performance and the source engine only utilizes 2 out of the 8 cores to begin with, my FPS isn't all that high even when I'm not streaming.

Hey guys, a bit of a followup on this. I went ahead and bought the i5-4670k and the Z87-UD3H, and upon doing a benchmark test (http://teamfortress.tv/forum/thread/7598-tf2-benchmarks/1) to see how much of a difference there was in performance, here's a comparison of my old hardware and my new hardware:

With my FX-8350 (OC'ed @ 4.2GHz per core), H80i liquid cooling, and a GTX 680, this was my FPS on average:

2639 frames 25.047 seconds 98.36 fps ( 9.49 ms/f) 6.850 fps variability

With my new i5-4670k @ stock speeds (3.4GHz per core), stock cooling, and a GTX 680 (without drivers), this was my new FPS on average:

2639 frames 18.277 seconds 144.39 fps ( 6.93 ms/f) 7.608 fps variability

So if you're looking/thinking about switching from AMD to Intel and are unsure of whether or not there will be a performance increase, I can assure you that there will be one.
