[SOLVED] Mumble Overlay Doesn't Show
1

3 Frags +

Had this problem for a while:

Mumble overlay doesn't show up when I'm playing TF2
-Tried full screen / windowed
-Tried switching to dxlevel 81 and dxlevel 95
-Tried using the launch command -nod3d9ex
-Tried reinstalling mumble
-Tried deleting C:\Users\Steve\AppData\Roaming\Mumble folder
-Tried loading up other overlay skins
-Tried adding HL2.exe to whitelist (see below)

http://puu.sh/6reTo.png

Still does not show up.

Anyone have any other ideas?

[Edit] Here's my blacklist: http://puu.sh/6rfbL.png

Have you tried the snapshot releases? I have been using them without issue for a few months. Might have a fix for your issue...

is your windows 64 bit?

and what version of mumble do you have? there's a 1.2.5 out

edit: an older version might be the trick as well

I deleted mat_antialias from my (fps config) and it works for me. I'm currently using Windows 8 64 Bit.

This happened to me a long time ago so I can't remember the fix that well, but I think I might've downgraded my graphics card drivers and it worked again

Ah Mumble overlay... you tricky son of a bitch. You're gonna have to pray that the Mumble God doth smile down upon ye because I've found it to be very troublesome in the past.

I use older graphics card drivers (updated once and lost overlay). Also, the older drivers seem to run TF2 better :-/

I also use an older version of mumble (updated once and lost overlay).

I've had success with both DX8 and 9 (thankfully!!) Sorry this isn't more helpful, when I get home in a few hours I can post my Mumble version and you can give that a go if you'd like.

edit: running mumble version 1.2.3. overlay works with lightboost as well

try the latest snapshot version

or

replace "Mumble/mumble_ol.dll" with this old version of the overlay
make sure you backup your old one, just rename it and add backup to the end

try the latest snapshot version

or

replace "Mumble/mumble_ol.dll" with this old version of the overlay

read through all of your suggestions and still wasn't able to fix my overlay.

suggestions i tried were:
-removing mat_antialias from my autoexec
-installing a new version of mumble (1.2.5)
-turning off lightboost
-replacing my mumble_ol.dll

I didn't try rolling back my video drivers nor my mumble. Would someone be able to upload an old version of mumble for me to download? Also, how far back should I roll my nvidia drivers?

System information:
Windows 7 Professional 64 bit Service Pack 1 (yes pharaoh)
DirectX runtime version: 11.0
Nvidia GTX 770
Driver version: 331.65

I was trying to look for a solution online and found someone who said that overlay only works on Service Pack 2. Is there even a SP2 for Windows 7 Professional 64-bit? I can't find it anywhere and I also don't know computers so that might be a dumb question.

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions and if you have any more shoot em my way!

[edit] ok so when I tried to delete the mumble_ol.dll file that alfie uploaded, I got the following error message:

http://puu.sh/75fdY.png

does this mean that GeForce Experience might be messing with my overlay?

Thanks for the suggestions! Tried to do the following fixes (to no avail):
-Uninstalling Nvidia GeForce Experience
-Completely uninstalling Mumble and then reinstalling version 1.2.3
-Uninstalling Java 64-bit and installing Java 32-bit
-Using the -nod3d9ex command in different combinations
-Running TF2 in windowed mode in different combinations
-I've never installed sweetfx

:(

I had the same problem earlier. I just restarted mumble a couple of times and it eventually worked.
Although I did try resetting the overlay to default and switching between the whitelist and blacklist.

I'm on Windows 8.1 64-bit, but maybe this will help you.
My overlay didn't work when running TF2 in compatibility with Windows 7. Check if you're not using any kind of compatibility mode. If you are, disable it. If not, try enabling it for different systems.

Another thing that would screw my overlay was mat_aaquality (not mat_antialias).

First, let's check if your user account has insufficient permissions.

Step 1. Ensure that your User Account Control (UAC) is entirely disabled.
Go to Start, Control Panel. On the top right, set "View by:" to Small icons. Click on User Accounts. Click on "Change User Account Control settings" and set the bar to the lowest level, "Never notify". Click OK and restart if it prompts you.

Step 2. Activating the true Administrator account.
Go to Start, and in the search bar below your programs, type in Command Prompt. Right-click on the program and press "Run as administrator".

Type in, without the quotations, "net user administrator /active:yes"

If it displays that "Access is denied", go back into cmd and type in, without quotations, "sfc /scannow". This will fix integrity issues with your Windows installation.

If it worked, then log off your account & log into the new Administrator account. Ensure that the User Account Controls are properly set to "Never notify" again on your new account, open up Mumble first, ensure that the overlay is enabled, ensure that hl2 is in your whitelist, and then open up Team Fortress 2.

If your account has proper permissions, nothing that was suggested before will make a difference. You can upgrade back to the newest driver release & reinstall GeForce Experience.

I've been struggling with this for a while, and after trailing the internet for solutions, no good. I already tried everything that has been suggested here, and nothing will work :( And it won't just not show up for me, it crashes the game on the spot.

Joshuawn:

Thanks for the very detailed instructions! I follow them and after typing in "net user administrator /active:yes" I was not denied. I proceeded to log out and back in through my administrator account when I encountered an issue:

http://i.imgur.com/TgeOkS4.png

D:\Program Files (x86)\Mumble\mumble.exe
A referral was returned from the server.

When I tried to use mumble.exe that is the error message that I received. As you can see from the screenshot, there is a mumble11x.exe that I was able to open, however Mumble version 1.1 does not have an overlay.

So I reinstalled mumble snapshot 1.2.5-248-g640b532 on my C drive and proceeded to try and test my overlay.

IT WORKS!! Super stoked. It even works on my original user account!
Question: Is it possible for me to change my user permissions back to the way it was before without screwing this up? How do I ensure that this doesn't screw up in the future?

Thanks again for the help. I really appreciate it!

Posting from my phone, so I apologize in advance for any orthographical issues.

The encountered error message was due to a discrepancy between certificates & user accounts. I did not have the foresight to recommend reinstallation as I've always found myself defaulting to the true Admin account on my home computer, so I apologize if you were understandably confused.

Most importantly, if Mumble is now working even on your old account, I need to know if you had to change your User Account Control permissions as iterated in Step 1. Did you have to set the slider to "Never notify?"

In essence, all the true Admin account is doing is assigning itself full control over all folders & files, negating all potential permission issues, which shouldn't wholly be necessary for the overlay to work, but it has saved me from a lot of potential hitches. If you did have to change your User Account Control setting, then all you need to do is log back in to your original account & in the Command Prompt, without quotations, type in "net user administrator /active:no".

Otherwise, there are two ways to tackle this:

a. Right-click on the parent folder of your affected program, click on Properties -- I apologize for any potential discrepancies as I'm not at my computer -- and then I believe you click on the Permissions tab. Under Advanced, directly assign your User Account with ownership & Full Control.

b. Transfer all documents & AppData from your old account to the new true Admin account. You can then open "netplwiz" and automatically log on to the true Admin account

It's entirely possible that reinstalling Mumble on the true Admin account automatically elevated permissions of Mumble's folders & files to a system-wide Full Control, which is a big reason to use the true Admin account.

wait so you're saying i should use the true Admin account 24/7 as my usual account that I log into? I did have to set my slider to "Never notify" on both my normal account and my true admin account, but I'd like to change it back if possible as I'm worried that it is a potential security issue.

The true Administrator account just automatically grants you a higher level of ownership that affects synergistic file & folder interaction; I'm not sure if there could be a vulnerability that'd be any worse than what a "normal" Administrator account has to deal with. When it comes to administrator accounts on personal PC's, a breach is a breach. I do hope I don't come off as patronizing, but I doubt that you've allocated different resources to different accounts; it's not something anyone really needs to do with their own personal computers.

Again, you could manually assign ownership & Full Control permissions after installation with a normal Administrator account, but the true Administrator account makes it less of a hassle.
