Does anyone understand racial pride?

Does anyone understand stuff like racial pride, ethnic pride--or as a matter of fact, national pride?

I've never really understood why someone would be proud to be of a certain race, ethnicity, or nationality. I'm Asian in the eyes of social construct, and as far as I can see it, it takes no skill to be Asian. So I never understood why Asians are praised at being good at math or supposedly smart. I remember this year's Independence Day where there were buttons being sold at various fireworks shops, saying, "Proud to be American." And as usual I was like, "What does that mean?" Although I'm not originally from the United States I know that nationality isn't something that's "chosen." Most of us don't really get to choose our nationality, much less race and ethnicity. Isn't national pride what got us into WW1 in the first place? So why would anyone be proud to be an American, or Asian, or whatever ethnicity? I think pride should be reserved for what you've accomplished in life. I'm proud to have gotten an 'A' on that exam because I studied, rather than, I'm proud to have gotten an 'A' on that exam because I can write my name. I'm Chinese, Korean, and French but I didn't choose my ethnicities--it's pretty much a genetic predisposition. It's like being genetically predisposed to having breast cancer, yet nobody says, "I'm proud to have a genetic predisposition for breast cancer." I think having way too much pride in something that is not earned is vice. Nowadays, I feel as though everyone is arrogant and cocky without substantiation.

How to make yourself feel special:

1. Make a list of all your aspects (race, gender, nationality, etc.)
2. Pick one of those at random.
3. Combine that word with the word "pride"
4. ???
5. PROFIT!

Genetics and environment basically create the person you are; most of both of those is just luck.
Why feel pride for anything when we're just sacks of chemicals?

On a less strange note, I agree. I've never understood why people feel proud for things that happened 500 years before they were born.

"We were the first to abolish slavery!" No we weren't, our ancestors were.

Well, I, as a Texan, have an interesting view on national and even state pride. I don't nor have I ever supported Texas seceeding or any of that nonsense, but I would come to the defense of my state if I ever needed to. However, the same goes for America, I cannot yet sign up for a role in the military, but I do intend on joining the reserves after I finish college. The pride I feel is hard to explain, I guess its sort of like saying, "Hey this is mine and I love it because it is mine." Now, back to how being a Texan makes me a bit different, whenever I travel out of our country, when people ask me where I'm from, I typically, without thinking say Texas.

Oh and about WW1, we joined WW1 because the we intercepted a message called the Zimmerman Telegraph, it was to the Mexican government, from the Germans. It said that if Mexico joined the Axis and attacked America that Germany would give them lands they previously owned (Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico).

As long as everyone stays mature, I see no reason to.

Although off-topic, race has always been a touchy subject; it IS sensitive.

However, to be able to ADDRESS it and talk about it without being all racial is another thing.
A terrible example is Huck Finn. From what I recall, my English teacher talked about how some schools would never read it due to it being "offensive", while others praise it and claim it's vital for talking about race.

The OP is simply discussing her opinion. From what I've read, she did NOT say anything offensive, but rather offered her own perspective upon the idea of "pride".

National Pride assisted in the carrying out of WW 1 - but it wasn't the causation. If you're looking for cause you need look no further than the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. Czarist Russia and The Austro-Hungarian Empire really really wanted the bits that were falling off of the Ottoman Empire and they decided to duke it out over them and they brought their friends.

Nationalism, and racial pride is something recent - you'd never really have gotten anything like it in the 1700's - one's religion, one's local city or village was far more important. It's primarily because of the sacro-sanct nature of the nation state which is utilized for great national efforts (typically wars). Why does it continue despite it being illogical? Because it's a powerful tool for ruling people, and as such it's heavily pushed by any ruling power - just remember how bat shit crazy things were in 2001 after 9/11.

Racial pride is a subconscious tool for the stupid and the irrational. In all ways of you think of it, taking justifiable pride in the premise in which you're born in makes no sense. I am black, but never in my life have I ever felt accomplishment or achievement in being so. Being a proud American probably stems from the many numerous wars we've been in, where the United States have obviously fared well in. These feelings of pride are only kept by the conservative nature of the government, and the faces of the media, who feel that promoting "american pride" they can retain a good public image. Any person who seriously feels pride in their birth, or race, gender, etc, is pretty much ignorant. There's no reason to be proud that you're white, black, asian, hispanic, or any other thing. You shouldn't even be proud that you are human. But you sure as hell can be happy.

You have to take pride in some aspects of your life, but yes National/Ethnic Identity is a pretty sombre choice in comparison to things such as taking pride in your own achievements, or your families history or how well you tolerate others in this world.

The absolute worst thing on the internet in my opinion is when I watch something like a Cricket clip (I like Cricket) and admire the video then suddenly I see a bunch of people in the comments section arguing about historical facts behind British Empire dominating the world, or 1857 Uprising in India and the murdering of civilians, blah blah blah. All I wanted to do was watch a sport's clip.

It all depends on what the definition of "pride" really is, and what you define as luck, choice, identity, etc.

There seems to be a growing opposition to hard determinism and incompatibilism in the philosophical and scientific communities. Hard determinism is too simple and debates an indefinable form of free will.

eggtartIsn't national pride what got us into WW1 in the first place?

If you believe that going to war over the killing of American civilians in international waters is a result of unchecked pride, I believe you do not know what pride means.

Mr_PerfectOh and about WW1, we joined WW1 because the we intercepted a message called the Zimmerman Telegraph, it was to the Mexican government, from the Germans. It said that if Mexico joined the Axis and attacked America that Germany would give them lands they previously owned (Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico).

While American-German hostilities were certainly exacerbated by the Zimmerman Telegram, by far the biggest reason for America joining WWI was Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare. American civilians were being killed as if they were armed combatants. The Germans sent the Zimmerman Telegram because they believed that war with the US was already inevitable, which means that the telegram played a minimal role in America's decision to go to war.

The note actually only promised Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico, and only asked for Mexican assistance should America enter WWI. It was meant to discourage America from going to war, not spur Mexico into WWI.

Well also... There was no Axis in world war one :/ The word you're looking for is Central Powers. And yes, the sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman telegraph were useful political tools for justifying America's entry into ww1, but not the major deciding factor. German desperation leading into unrestricted submarine warfare, and impending Russian collapse (and intense lobbying from France and the UK) were what really did it in, although Wilson and co., had been searching for reasons to join in the war for some time, particularly because it looked pretty clearly like Germany would be unable to win (always good to join a war when it's almost over) and that the victors would have a major stake in deciding the future of world geo-politics (a handy thing to have as well).

I don't think anyone should be ashamed of who they are. If you don't like something about yourself, try to change it. If it's not in your power to change it, then learn to live and enjoy life with it regardless. And if other people hate you for it, fuck' em and just keep on being happy with yourself.

With that being said, I'm sick of vegans bragging about how much better they are than me cause they're eating shitty gluten-free-organic-nonGMO-tasteless-textureless food. Let me eat my damn burger, you don't hear me telling you how good the grease tastes.

But I could tell you how much better a hamburger made with beef from the butcher shop is as opposed to beef from just about any other source - given you know how to make hamburgers. I can't stress enough how different fresh meat is from processed or packaged meats.
