So I've been doing a lot of fundraising lately, raising money for a group trip next year where a bunch of my friends and I will travel to Tanzania and surrounding countries to get a taste of the environment and to meet and help out local communities.

I honestly had no previous ambitions before the opportunity arose itself, and still don't really have a clue as to what it could possibly be like over there. Soon we have to decide where and what we're going to do in the week or so of free-time we get to ourselves, and I have no clue of what I want to do apart from safari.

So I was wondering if any of you guys have been to Africa, or even better, Tanzania, and could give me an insight of what it's going to be like, and what I should get up to in my free-time over there?

Above all, be smart. Know when to GTFO of an uncomfortable/dangerous situation. My friend spent a semester in Kenya and twice had to get off at another bus stop due to a public shooting happening downtown near his regular stop.

I went in August to visit my dad, though I was all the way in the north. It's probably going to be hot, lots of mosquitoes. People might be friendly, they shouldn't have a reason to dislike you.

I used to live in Senegal, on the west coast, for about 6 years. I cannot enjoy a party unless I know literally everyone there because so many of the markets in the city I lived in are pretty seedy for white people and I've always been taught to watch my back in large crowds.

Otherwise you're honestly pretty safe as long as you go to a stable country. Other than people getting pickpocketed in Sandaga Market or being sharked by sellers and taxi drivers I don't think I ever heard of anyone getting into trouble that we were acquainted with. Well there was one riot I saw, but we were able to avoid it and that was one riot over a period of six years anyways.
