it's amazing for gaming in general, but only hands-on experience will tell if it's going to affect competitive gaming

unless AMD can do something similar, i'm going to buy a setup with this next time i upgrade anything

This seems to be aimed at systems where you are producing less frames per second than your monitor's max refresh rate, no? I don't think that is the case for most competitive gamers.

From NVIDIA's official announcement:
With G-SYNC, the monitor begins a refresh cycle right after each frame is completely rendered on the GPU. Since the GPU renders with variable time, the refresh of the monitor now has no fixed rate.

#4 - Although this is aimed at that crowd this could be good for people with 144/120hz monitors, and if done right I can see this lowering input lag.

Let's hope this is not just marketing talk.

I would place Anand Shimpi pretty high on a list of trustworthy technology reporters, so I doubt that it is purely marketing. But again I don't know that he is viewing it from a competitive gaming standpoint. It is unfortunate (and perhaps telling) that the demos started at 60 fps and worked downwards.

This would make the large frame variations in any game much more smooth. Hopefully the implementation is open so that others can follow suit so that this becomes the de-facto way to use video outputs.

Lightboost is a different feature entirely. Lightboost makes the screen go to black inbetween frames as a way of reducing the blurring effect you get when transitioning from one frame to another.

G-Sync makes the monitor display an entire frame every time the gpu outputs one rather than at the default timing of the monitor.

very awesome, and I hope moving forward this becomes the norm for all displays

considering the 2D lightboost hack requires a continuous 120hz this would break it in its current form, but I have a feeling that lightboost might become a vendor feature in upcoming gaming monitors

If you have a recent GTX card, it will already support this from a driver update, so there won't be a reason to update beyond keeping up with next gen games.

You need to have specific monitors. The first one coming out is a 400$ 144 Hz maximum ASUS VG248QE. (also the monitor won't work unless you're using an nvidia GPU that supports G-Sync, but this isn't 100% confirmed yet I think)

It benefits people on both sides of the FPS spectrum. If you get bad FPS it will make the refresh rate match it so it will look smoother (30 FPS on a 30 Hz refresh rate looks better than 30 FPS on a 60 Hz refresh rate), if you get great FPS (higher than 144 in this case) you won't get screen tearing cause of what G-Sync does and won't need to enable awful V-Sync.

I don't really think it's stupid, since it's a nvidia R+D, I'm sure that AMD will come out with one shortly after they get their hands on it.

Yes. (also due to the tech it uses it won't be a bad thing! It'll look better than 30 FPS on a normal 60/120/144 Hz monitor)

Snagged my vg248 on eBay for $240 with free shipping, by the way :)

What’s interesting to me about this last situation is if 120/144Hz reduces tearing enough to the point where you’re ok with it, G-Sync may be a solution to a problem you no longer care about. If you’re hyper sensitive to tearing however, there’s still value in G-Sync even at these high refresh rates.

G-sync is only not useful when your FPS is exactly the same as your refresh rate, i.e. 60fps 60hz with absolutely no fps drops, or 120/144. At any other time, G_sync will help. Even when you are getting exactly 120fps with no drops, it can help since your monitor could receive the frame in between a refresh, meaning up to 7ms (15ms on 60hz) delay between the frame being drawn and you seeing the frame. G-sync will prevent this by keeping your refresh rate exactly in sync with the FPS.

What it won't help with is input delay if you're below your refresh rate. E.g., if you're at 30fps on a 60hz monitor, you will have a 33ms delay between your inputs being shown on screen. This won't change with G-sync, it will still take 33ms for the new frame to display.
