I've been working out a decent amount lately for hockey and skating a lot but I've never used protein powder or really drunk protein shakes.

Anyone recommend a certain brand or flavor?

I'm going to do more research online but I was wondering what you guys do?

Syntha-6 Chocolate Peanut Butter (22g protein) is what I use, mainly because I like the taste. I personally don't like vanilla flavored protein powders unless you add something like fruit, oreo cookies, etc. to the shake to enhance the flavor.

They are super cheap at Costco (1,50$ in Canada per 30 grams shakes)... I don't mind the taste for a no sugar drink (I usually hate what is sugar free). Also, they are mixed already so you don't even have to bother mixing them (powder proteins are a pain)!

It could not matter less. Just use whatever's cheapest per gram of protein in your area. Usually it's the large, dried whey protein containers. Stuff doesn't go bad, so don't worry about buying in bulk.

I used to buy the Vitamin Shoppe brand. Same stuff, cheaper than some other brands, worked great.

They have weight gainer too that my buddy used for a bit and got super-huge, but you do put on some chub with it till you trim out...but you'll put on much more muscle. I like having abs tho, so I only used it for a bit as it had creatine in it and although probably safe, I don't see the need to take the risk

get the ON gold standard. it has minimal carbs and fats while having a decent portion of protein per scoop. i think muscle milk gives you 35 grams per two (70 grams total)scoop. but in reality, most of your protein intake should be coming from your diet. grilled chicken is my usual choice.

all the popular brands are pretty much the same. I've been buying optimum nutrition 100% whey for quite a while. It's one of the cheaper ones and most of the flavors taste pretty decent. Trutein cinnabun tastes pretty amazing, but it's more complex than it needs to be and costs more.

mirroring what others have said, most whey protein powders are the exact same - you just pay for brand and/or other fillers that may have been added.

conversely, protein powder isn't necessary for muscle growth and should be used as it is: a supplement to your diet. i'm on a caloric deficit and find that i would rather spend my calories eating whole food that contains protein, rather than drinking a liquid version.

whatever the goal you may have is (gain muscle, shed fat, cut weight, etc.), realize that nutrition is far more important than what you lift or much you do cardio.

feel free to add me if you'd like. i could assist you with finding out your personal nutrition and macronutrient needs based upon the goals you have in mind.

edit: to answer your immediate question, i like both progenex and musclemilk products. both have great flavor, and musclemilk products tend to be found cheaply at walmart/target/cvs/etc

Actually there are different kinds of protein powders. ^

Also like the previous person posted, don't rely on protein from powder alone. Make sure you eat lots of high protein foods (chicken breast, turkey breast, tuna, other lean meats, kidney beans etc)

I'm not into only-protein powders, instead, I'm into all-in-one powders, my favourite is the Herbalife one, what it does is that replaces a meal of the day and skips the sugar and fat. It also helps me to have a lot more energy during the mornings. I complement this with a no sugar and low fat food schedule.
