I'm pretty sure 90% of mid/high/prem players know about pug site. Maybe open/low players have no idea or just don't care.

if ur open/low you can't play pugs since you're never going to get picked up and even if you do you'll get harrassed and trash talked all game. you should know the first part wonder since you always pick captain so you don't get fatkidded

wonderI'm just telling facts. Back in 2015/2016 when scene was very active we had 3 pugs starting at same time almost for whole day. We need to accept game is dying. I know it's hard but it is what it is.

This is the mentality that kills the scene for good by the way. There needs to be systems or platforms in place that accommodates PUGs at all levels of skill for a smaller playerbase, not to just "accept that the game is dying". As a very washed up middie at best, finding regular ways of playing but still getting a proper 6s experience is something I have wanted for years now. I understand and agree that pugging at the top level is tough nowadays, but the Fresh-Mid experience is all but non-existent outside of in-houses, and its that level of play that needs support as a strong and vibrant community at that level will trickle upwards to provide a more robust community at the top flight.

Unless you know where mixes are happening, its really hard to regularly play non-league 6s, and as someone who does not really have the time to commit to a season anymore it makes it difficult to try and play this game as often as I'd like.

it sucks how difficult it is to play a game of sixes when you want to. Overwatch, Counter Strike, Call of Duty, Apex, Valorant. all of these games put you in a match never longer than 3 minutes after you press play, and the experience you get is no different from the experience the pros get. the only difference is the players, which thanks to MMR are attempted to be matched to your skill level as closely as possible. compare this to TF2 where, if you decide out of the blue one day that you want to play a game of sixes on your favourite class of soldier, you have maybe 3 options. join a tf2center (could take upwards of an hour depending on the time of day, and tends to be a subpar missmatched experience), merc for a team in a scrim (requires you to only play during a time period of 7-9pm, if you even find a team that needs a player), or add up to a double mix (you have to know someone to invite you to the server and the server owners have to let you in, requires you to wait for 11 other people to also decide to mix). the alternative is pugging, but the pugs are dead. so you decide not to play tf2 competitively. repeat for 1000 other players and this is why the league is dead.

6v6 Tf2center is active 24/7. I play it everyday and it's fun, you can meet here every kind of players, open, low and d1/prem. Only top level pugs are dead.

You compare new games with 100x bigger player base and professional esport scenes to old grandpa tf2.

cause and effect wonder, do you think these games would have 100x the playerbase if the matchmaking experience was the same as tf2s?

ofc not, but tf2 got released in 2007 and there were no things like matchmaking back then in any game, even old cs had no matchmaking. Valve said many times they're not planning to make tf2 an esport game. Tf2 isn't serious comp game but it's fun to play and it's most important. I don't have problem with this until I have fun.

I don't know but my experience adding up to wait several hours only to not get picked, and then if i do get picked i get put in a pug with insufferable people who sound like that they are at the edge of punching their monitor is not really a great experience in my opinion. I guess i can do my part and start adding up again but i don't feel like my experience will change on this front though sitting on my ass not adding up wont change anything either ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Personally advertising the pug site on etf2l might help pull more people onto the site but i am unsure if it will be a net positive in the first place as i think some people prefer the captain system to avoid having to play with certain other players...
I have observed over the years that at least in EU the pug sites for like Germans and Finnish peeps seem to have quite some traction and honestly i am not sure why they are so successful, i could make a guess that the fin pugs are because of the ping difference.

Also wonder, you have free will please exercise it and stop replying to this thread, nobody is putting a gun to your head forcing you continue adding nothing of value to this thread. If you cannot think of anything else but "lol dead game" then i would advise you go leave this thread and go do literally anything. We played together 27 seasons ago and you were not this jaded, its disappointing to see you acting like this, be better.

i actually think the football analogy is pretty good

we actually do have a few shoddy pitches which barely work (pickup, protfx), but no one plays on them.

and we have some closed off pitches (pug discords), which are being played, but not really the same thing

why would the local council build newer pitches if no one is even playing the existing ones?

Because the only "pitch" is protfx and the "pitch" is not getting support.
Do you like to play football without trimmed grass and holes every 2 meters?

hey,

pug.tf looks great so far, and i really appreciate you taking the effort here; by just being actively developing the site you're already doing a great job, especially compared to the alternatives

but there are heavy vibe-coding vibes, with lots of strange decisions, small errors, weird features, etc.
for example:
- game being stuck in draft
- weird elo calculator
- weird logs analysis to determine elo and leaderboard (are these holdovers from another project?)
- why can non-logged in people chat?
- why are there gifs in chat?
- why are there so many different layouts available?
- why do i need to link my discord?
- multi-region players are double counted as online
- player names should really come from etf2l/rgl

can't really speak to how good the site works post-draft, which is really the most important part of a pug site

i'm a huge llm user myself, so this isn't a criticism of that. but it's concerning that there doesn't seem to be much "taste". as in, no overarching vision, and not enough discrimination between what's important and what's not. we want to have minimal implementations of things that work, not the maximum amount of (shoddily) implemented features. (tf2pickup does this really well imo.) i'd love to be proven wrong.

keep in mind this is kind of what killed protfx. copper decided to re-vibe code the website or something, which broke the website completely.

i'm happy to give pug.tf a try. but i'm not sure if a better website is the solution to the pug issue.

I've been hearing a lot of this for the last 2 weeks, p much everything u mentioned is either in an open convo or code rn, i assure you it can all change in the next 2~3 weeks, I update things frequently.

the draft isnt stuck it's on just for show now, the calc and elo surely need better representation but the logic is solid, the whole gifs, guests and chat bit is honestly just a play on interactions, a test if it sticks or not, the layouts started as a single option but ppl cant seem to shake the protfx look so now there's more, u link discord because discord vc is an option and its auto managed with a bot that has a bunch more features to it.

and lastly ye a new website isn't a solution fs, this is a why not type shot, hits or dies i'm here for it anyway

If anyone is just looking for a place to play, there is Allen Mixes. Server grew pretty quickly and now has over 200 members, including a lot of high/prem players.

It’s Discord-based, and access is gated pretty hard:
Steam link required
ETF2L verification required
Mid+ only

So it’s meant to be a curated DMIX environment rather than public chaos.

We’ve got proper onboarding, moderation, draft system, fatkid priority, etc... and the whole thing runs through one bot in Discord.

If you’re Mid+ and want to check it out, here it is:
