ETF2L Premiership and Division One Preview - Week Six
posted in News

June 8, 2013

Due to Ally's busy period of studying and exams coming up, he has been unable to carry on this series. We could not let his brilliant effort for the past five weeks go unfinished and be doomed to the same legacy of Admirable's e-sports journalistic career. Henceforth, for this week and possibly the remainder of the season if our esteemed author Ally does not have time to return, I (Hildreth) and my teammate (Sideshow) from Division 1 team Furbo Pandas will cover this week's addition of ETF2L's Premiership and Division 1 previews along with updates from the EU scene.

Competitive TF2 news from this week

ESA Gamer Launches - Grand news for the continent of European TF2 as ESA Gamer has gone live, giving the EU scene a similar model to the North American scene with a subscription based league with tournaments and prize money. It has already announced its first TF2 tournament called simply 'Open and Unseeded #1' with a possible prize fund of £1,250, depending on the amount of subscriptions. Crucially though, ESA gamer is being run by experienced ETF2L Admins CanFo and SonnyBlack meaning there is a lot of familiarity with the way European TF2 is run, although it seems like the direction they are looking to push the league is towards the North American ruleset, with two 30 minute halves on one map. Although I haven't seen any reference to it, I also assume they will use a winlimit of 5 instead of a win difference. Overall it sounds promising for European TF2, being the first new league for a few years supporting the game. And in the same week Valve have confirmed plans to possibly launch their own support for competitive TF2 in the form of a Highlander lobby system - the future is looking brighter for competitive TF2 post i49. For more information on ESA gamer visit their website and read the VanillaTF2 article.

“Reverto Origami” - Sideshow: Last week you read about how Stark, the pocket soldier for Reverto, had moved house recently and was having terrible problems with his internet. These problems were severe enough to stop him being able to play pcws, officials or any form of TF2. Rather than trying to find a new pocket soldier, Reverto actually decided to fold their team. The reason for this seems to have been that Stark was micromanaging Maffi and Alba (demoman and scout respectively) massively, and they felt unable to cope with top division one without that kind of assistance. The team folded, players were looking for new teams and division 1 lost a contender for the top spot. Great news for Furbo Pandas!

However, that wasn't the end of it. Fortunately for the rest of Reverto, Stark figured out the cause of his internet issues. Wasn't a router issue. No problems with his line or his modem. Nope, his parents were on netflix while he was playing...

Once this problem was solved by Stark telling his parents to pirate their movies instead of using a streaming service, Reverto simply unfolded themselves (having a Crack Clan-esque relationship with the admins) and resumed playing in the league. Much to the disappointment of Hildreth who cried in his bedroom for days. However this short break seems to have made them realise that a change was necessary for them to progress further than their top d1/low prem level, which brings me on to:

Roster Changes - Reverto haven't actually kicked anybody from their team or brought anyone new in, but they've shuffled themselves around quite a bit. Stark has made the move to demoman and Maffi is now on roamer, which has forced previous roamer RisinG into the pocket and maincaller role. I have yet to see how they'll play with this roster, but RisinG is a great soldier and Maffi has played well on roamer previously. Stark originally joined the team on demoman when Reverto were in division 2 so this move will not take them long to adjust to, but I still expect them to be significantly weaker for the next couple of weeks.

Decerto have also had a major roster change recently, having been forced to drop their demoman huhy after he got a job which doesn't allow him to commit very much time to TF2. Whilst writing this article, Decerto messaged me to say that they have just picked up Fuo of ex-Quarantine fame. I think this is a very good pickup - Fuo will fit into their playstyle perfectly and has the experience Decerto need to go for that top spot in division one this season. Good luck to them!

LMS have shuffled around a bit as well, picking up WAR to play roaming soldier and moving Forsak3n to pocket. This makes space for sickless to play scout alongside reko. We'll have to see if these roster changes make any impact on their current losing streak.

In other roster news, RLM have brought in wltrs on scout (I assume to replace quad) and Vinland have moved on from being a full national team, as Captainhax joins the ranks as pocket soldier to fill the gap left by Darn and then party boy Tumpelol.

Epsilon Need You! - Not actually you. Unless you're a medic who could possibly roam and you're in low prem or division 1 with a lot of raw potential. That's who Epsilon are currently on the lookout for, and whilst a team searching for a backup would normally not make any form of news, the fact that it is Epsilon and they're looking for someone from a lower division deserves publicity. The original reason for this search was that GeaR is unavailable to play on Tuesdays and KnOxXx is also occasionally unavailable due to work, so they wanted to find a roaming soldier who could also play medic to replace them on those days. However they have realised that with KnOxXx leaving after i49, they would be better off recruiting a medic to backup and have KnOxXx play roamer on Tuesdays. In this way, I think they hope that the new backup would be ready to play full time medic after i49. Current trialists are actually very few, and Dendocror is the only one they have tried so far, so I believe they are still very much on the lookout for upcoming talent.

Rip in Peace Karnage - Hildreth: Elsewhere, Karnage called it a day and folded, meaning all the matches they played were void due to the ETF2L rule of needing to play at least 75% of your seasons matches for them to count. My team plus Decerto were the most hurt as we lost 6 points, though the teams that Karnage beat, (Sparkle Motion and Trick17) at least get an opportunity to move up the table without playing a game. Ex leader Dendocror made an emotional statement, I am sure it will not leave a dry eye in the house:

Dendocror: When Fawwles first approached me to create the team, I'd never have imagined how far we'd manage to get. Our original intention was to aim for div4 with me on medic, fawwles on demo and just grab in any other player who was interested. I'm usually in my element at this point, as I like putting teams with big potential together but also who would get on. We were aiming for a full British roster, but ended up picking r0cky thus leading to our original name. With a bit of a ROCKY start to season 14, we lost to vier red in our first week. We didn't mind this all too much, and just continued to play and have fun. Strats weren't on our agenda, unless you call fulltime kritz or pyro to mid a strategy. I couldn't believe how much fun I was having whilst still winning official games. Even at the start of season 15 we just planned on entering division 2 again before being offered a spot in division 1. It's a shame that poop and fawwles left us so early, because I'm sure we'd have gone even more huge in divison 1 this season. I really want to thank all the members, ghent, r7an, fawwles, poop, r0cky, sheepy, kimberly and WORMS for making this such an amazing experience that lasted for over half a year. I didn't mind leading these guys at all, all of them were reliable and most importantly all of them were my friends. I wish good luck to all of them, whatever they decide to do. You're all extremely talented and wonderful people, thanks for reminding me how much fun it can be to play Team Fortress 2 competitively. P.S. sideshow's a wanker for backing out of our original lineup. ;D”

Lik' dis if u cry evrytime.

Last week’s interviewees

Anonymity is not something we value here, and our mystery gamers from week 5 are mysterious no longer! For our prem insight we had MightyMe, the new demoman for LMS as gamer #1; mystery gamer #2 was of course the legend that is Mirelin (very difficult to guess). As for the division one insight, we had some realtalk from Shifty, the medic for Furbo Pandas and Gubbins featured as mystery gamer #4, the pocket/scout - but not pocket scout - for sparkLE Motion. Feel free to abuse them for the truth bombs they dropped last week.

Results from last week

Hildreth: So few games were played last week, but those that were I commend thee for your punctuality. We have a few games missing/late as of time of writing, plus a lot of wildcarded matches. With the deadline for games being June 30th there may be quite a few late games crammed in this summer during catch-up week.

  • Legend of Peter and Paul (SOLAR) vs 90° Fov (Vinland) – Unplayed.
  • Epsilon vs Skidmark Central – Result: 5-0 on Process, 3-0 on Viaduct.
  • Broder vs Revoluzion la metagam - Unplayed.
  • Crack Clan vs Last Man Standing - Result: 5-0 on Process, 3-1 on Viaduct.

It seems like consistency is the key to success as top two Epsilon and Crack Clan are the only two teams playing their matches on time and they have been winning every game. Another week of rolls for both teams, and with Crack Clan dropping a round to LMS just like Epsilon did earlier in the season, it seems like nothing can separate the two teams as we head into the highly anticipated clash between the undefeated giants on Wednesday 12th June. Elsewhere LMS are still yet to get a point this season after 4 games, whilst Skidmark Central have taken only 6 points from 24; but for both teams the most difficult games are out of the way, LMS playing the teams immediately above them whilst Skidmark still have an important clash with RLM, LMS (slides right off the tongue doesn't it?) and Broder as they vie for the last playoff place, assuming teams don't reach their limit on minor warnings...LMS could be going into negative points if they're not careful.

  • Trick17 vs Furbo Pandas – Result – 0-1 Golden cap on Process, 0-3 on Viaduct
  • sparkLE Motion vs Decerto - Unplayed
  • myRevenge e.V. vs Fresh from da Morgue (Reverto) - Unplayed
  • d-d-Did I Stutter? vs myRevenge e.V. - Result from week 4 – 3-4 on Granary, 3-2 on Process.

Division 1's only game that was on time was the top vs bottom clash between my team Furbo Pandas and Trick17. If you saw the result, yes you read it correctly, it was a 0-0 match on Process. I lived through 30 minutes of abysmal last pushes, slow TF2 and solo plays which marked a game full of little individual quality although some solid team plays from Trick17 really shone through and I thought my team was lucky to even make it to 0-0. We won the Golden cap round in a minute but daaaamn that was 30 minutes of pain for all to endure. Viaduct thankfully could not possibly end 0-0 and we won that 3-0, but apart from this game no other matches were played, with the exception of a late week 4 game between DIS and myRevenge e.V. This looked like a much better quality match going 4-3 to myRevenge on the first map, cpgranary but then 3-2 to DIS on cpprocess_rc3.

The maps for Week 6 of Season 15 will be kothproviaductrc3 and cpbadlands

Crack Clan vs Epsilon eSports

  • Crack Clan: 2nuts, Brego, Ipz, T-mac, TviQ, smzi
  • Epsilon eSports: KnOxXx, numlocked, Mike, Gear, schocky, basH

Unconfirmed date, not this week due to wildcards.

My thoughts: This will be an amazing game in my opinion. Crack Clan have improved so much this season and Epsilon know it. Badlands especially will be a great map, as Ipz's nerding over mid strategies has paid dividends and they have the potential to take the map if Epsilon play into cc//'s hands. I'm really hoping that Epsilon are challenged and have to step it up into that extra gear (lol) they always seem to have available during officials. Even if Crack Clan come away with a disappointing result, I fully anticipate them to study this match and come back in the playoffs even stronger. Viaduct does seem to be a weaker map for Crack Clan though purely based on scrims and unless smzi and TviQ can pull some extraordinary plays out I expect the scouts of Epsilon along with numlocked to clean them up in DM fights. Having said all this I am still expecting a two map victory for Epsilon but there is real potential for an upset here before the playoffs. I think this will be the closest game before the playoffs and it is definitely one to watch!

Mystery Gamer #1 (Prediction: Epsilon to win both maps but not by much):

"cc vs epsilon this will be the game of the season, cc have improved tremendously but I still don't think it's enough to take epsi down. they'll come close, though"

Mystery Gamer #2 (Prediction: 0-3 Viaduct 0-5 Badlands):

"cc vs epsilon epsi to take badlands 5-0 cc might have a small chance on viaduct if tviq gets a lot of room to snipe but i dont see that happening so epsi to win that map 3-0"

broder vs Skidmark Central

  • broder: Mirelin, ryb, Zebbosai, jukebox, bybben, cookye
  • Skidmark Central: skeej, kaidus, flisko, Daleth, kiler4funN, Greg

Tuesday 11th June 21:15 CEST

My thoughts: At the beginning of the season this would probably have been pegged as a close game, with the 2nd seeded team playing the 4th seeded, but we've seen Skidmark Central flounder in spite of their impressive roster. They seem to be lacking a key team component and since dropping points to SOLAR and Vinland I think the team has given up really trying for a good result this season. Broder have looked impressive already this season and I think this game will be a fairly comfortable win for them despite kaidus doing massive work for Skidmark.

Mystery Gamer #1 (Prediction: god knows):

"broder vs skidmark central probably going to be a landslide in broder's favour but if skidmark remember to unmute themselves they might take a few rounds and maybe cause an upset"

Mystery Gamer #2 (Prediction: 3-0 Viaduct 5-0 Badlands):

"bff has a really good lineup but they suck as a team perhaps they miss a strong caller to lead them. broder should win this 5-0 3-0 but broder just comes back from a break so bff might be able to take some rounds but overall broder should win that game."

LMS vs SOLAR

  • Last Man Standing: Whiteglow, Mightyme, Forsak3n, WAR, reko, sickless
  • SOLAR: vanilla, lalli, qnx, Hycz, maidu, cor

My thoughts: With LMS changing their roster around and sitting at the bottom of the table, I really can't bring myself to back them. They've recently made the shift from an all-russian team to a european team and I think the change has upset their teamplay. They have a similar setup to SOLAR in my opinion, with big DM-focused plays. The difference is that SOLAR can co-ordinate themselves due to having played together for so long, whereas LMS really rely on the kritzkreig and big solo plays from their soldiers and demoman. I think the game changer here will be the teamwork and scouts from SOLAR shining through and they will be able to pick both maps up off the back of this. It almost seems cliche of me to say it, but as always: watch out for the kritz plays from LMS.

Mystery Gamer #1 (Prediction: are you even trying):

"LMS with a fairly new lineup will be a little wobbly, but their DM is sick so I think they'll take it regardless"

Mystery Gamer #2 (Prediction: 2-3 Viaduct 3-5 Badlands):

"LMS vs SOLAR a very interesting game probably gonna be the best game this week. 2 close teams with super strong dm but in the end i think solar are gonna take both maps with only a round or 2 difference."

RLM vs 90° FOV ATK-Gaming aka Vinland aka Darn's team without Darn

  • Revoluzion la Metagame: Spin, Mark, Haunter, tek, Flippy, wltrs
  • 90° FOV: jose, suqp3r, Captainhax, Salmon, Rake, delzic

Thursday 13th June 21:15 CEST

My thoughts: Another interesting mid prem collision this week as the Finns take on Revoluzion la metagame. And even RLM didn't expect a switch to cl2 no unlocks and payload maps so there you go Robin, it can't be that stale. Both of these teams have been crushed by the top 3 and done reasonably well against the rest of prem, with RLM getting the upper hand in the tables due to a larger quantity and lower quality of games played. 90° FOV crucially took 3 points away from Skidmark Central in their game, causing a minor upset, while RLM drew with SOLAR and beat LMS. I think that this game will go the way of 90° FOV, who despite having had trouble previously with finding a pocket soldier, seem to have really found what they need in Captainhax. Although this will cause a shift from Finnish to English comms, I think his maincalling and pocketing will more than make up for it. RLM have also recently brought in wltrs on scout, but it doesn't seem to be having a major impact - RLM already had the DM power, they just lack teamwork and co-ordination. I think 90° FOV will take viaduct with relative ease due to superior teamwork but badlands will be a much closer game. Should make for a great cast if an org chooses to, with big sniping plays possible from any of the scouts or roaming soldiers. Jose and Spin will have to stay calm and keep their heads if they want to compete for a playoff spot!

Mystery Gamer #1 (Prediction: mystery gamer #1 is a dribblenerd):

"vinland could actually do some shit now they aren't held back"

Mystery Gamer #2 (Prediction: 3-2 Viaduct 4-1 Badlands):

"Well RLM reminds me a lot of bff they have a very strong lineup but lack a good caller/leader. ive got no clue how good vinland is with this lineup so im gonna give it to RLM just cause their lineup looks better, but if captainhax does a good job maincalling vinland might surprise"

Division One Covered by Hildreth

Current Division 1 Standings:

  1. Furbo Pandas (Played 4 Won 3 Drawn 1) (1 Golden Cap Win)
  2. Team Reverto (Played 3 Won 2 Drawn 1) (1 Golden Cap Win)
  3. My Revenge e.V. (Played 4 Won 1 Drawn 2 Lost 1)

My Revenge e.V vs Reverto aka Fresh from da Morgue

  • myRevenge e.V.: AnimaL, Spary, Old Grandma, Shrike, msh, ReveraL
  • Team Reverto: BaR, Maffi, Stark, Rising, Alba, e-thug

Tuesday 11th June @ 21:15 CEST

My thoughts: Reverto's coming back to life and switching their combo classes around ( Maffi from Demoman to Roamer, Stark from Pocket to Demoman, Rising from Roamer to Pocket) can go two ways; either they ride this new found momentum and roll their next 3 games and potentially take Division 1 assuming Furbo Pandas drop a point somewhere, or they can come back and struggle from having a week or two away from regular practice, especially when they are still yet to play Viaduct and face two matches in the space of 3 days. For My Revenge e.V by gc-server.de (gotta plug 'dem sponsors) they could still technically win the division and the longer they have stayed together, the more their teamwork seems to be improving, though currently they are looking at a mid-table finish, I give them every chance of getting some points here as they have looked fairly consistent this season drawing the last 2 officials 3-3, I expect the combo from Reverto to give them the edge and their teamwork to pull through but with the maps being Badlands, a map people know like the edge of their foreskin (or where it used to be) and Viaduct, a map that is new and could pull some surprise results there is still a possibility Reverto may drop a point or two here.

Mystery Gamer #3 (Prediction: 3-1 on Viaduct, 2-5 on Badlands)

”This game could be quite the upset. I have always thought My revenge are stronger than people think with a solid roster that can improve greatly over time. However Reverto are still Reverto and if they can play anything like they did before the fold it should be an easy badlands win but viaduct I can see Spary crushing everyone with his stickies, msh running into peoples faces and 2/3 shotting them and everyone cleaning up.”

Mystery Gamer #4 (Prediction: 0-3 on Viaduct, 3-5 on Badlands)

"As already mentioned, Reverto went through some roster changes, but myRevenge changed a scout as well. Viaduct should be quite easy for Reverto as i feel like they've got better team play in general. I expect an interesting game on process, which will depend on daily form."

D-d-did I stutter? vs Trick 17 Black

  • d-d-Did I Stutter: Fenrir, Funkadelic, Linus, wolve, Buttnose, Permzilla
  • Trick17 Black: Kamari, kr4tos, slate, WalKer, RazorsEdge, _*unconfirmed*

Monday 10th June @ 21:15 CEST

My thoughts: Trick17 pulled of a surprise draw on Process against Furbo Pandas, despite not having a main scout (using Alba from Reverto – REVERTO CHEATS?!?!?!?!?!!?) and showing that perhaps their time together as a team is finally paying off, although they didn't win any rounds, you know what they say 'build from the back', Walker on the English maincalling/pocket role has given the team some leadership but with a lack of scout still and 4 Germans for Walker to command, it hasn't been an easy ride for them, despite Slate and RazorEdge showing some individual class. Did I stutter have always managed to compete in matches this season but shown inconsistency getting the results, a series of draws from close map wins and some losses like to Decerto and Furbo Pandas where for a lot of the game they looked in it before slipping at the end. Wolve has been beasting it as pocket this season, working in sync with Linus and Funkadelic supporting him and allowing him to flourish, I think they will have too much for Trick17 assuming Premzilla lives up to his name on scout and is able to outshine Trick17's carry scout, RazorEdge.

Mystery Gamer #3 (Prediction: 3-0 on Viaduct, 5-2 on Badlands)

“Did I stutter have been very inconsistent from what I have seen from them. Expect Permzilla to destroy and his team to back him up or Permzilla to destroy and his team to not back him up. Trick17 on the other hand have the momentum from that point vs Furbo Pandas (sounds odd but true) but sadly as I am typing this they remain with only one scout. I expect Permzilla and Buttnose to overrun RazorEdge + random merc.”

Mystery Gamer #4 (Prediction: 3-2 on Viaduct, 4-2 on Badlands)

"Trick17 had a really bad season so far, but they showed in their last game vs Furbo Pandas that they are able to compete in Divison 1. On the other side Did-i-Stutter seems to take points out of almost every game. I think we won't see a rape in this game, but Did-i-stutter will take this not too hard and i expect big plays on the flank from Permzilla."

Sparkle Motion vs Furbo Pandas

  • SparkLe Motion: sparkLe, phy, WOODY, SteveyJJ, konr, Gubbins
  • Furbo Pandas: shifty, Hildreth, zooob, Sideshow, rock, furbo

Wednesday 12th June @ 21:15 CEST

My thoughts: Never express an opinion on your own team, so all I will say is I carried. Yup, all me, fuck Furbo and Zoob, our so called “Carries”, they ain't fit to scrub my dishes. And Rock going 6-22? I banned him from eating Pizza and Ice Cream until he rents The Mighty Ducks on DVD and watches it over and over then learns the value of teamwork > individual skills. Shifty as well, muting himself in a pcw? We actually did a lot better not hearing his awful voice, doesn't even have a real German accent anyway, learn 2 right-click noob. I best not mention Sideshow, everyone knows he doesn't know how to play TF2, to be fair we're only playing with him because his mother wanted him to have friends and paid us in 'favours'. So yeah I pretty much AM this team, going to rename us “Hildreth +5” as we lose our next two games and fold in style. Sparkle Motion, the only thing I can say is they copied our thing by naming their team after one of their players, I am pretty bitter about this! Seriously though, it will be interesting to see how old school TwistedPlay gamer SteveyJJ changes the team in a main calling pocket role, with Gubbins on scout now there is certainly a lot to fear about this reshaped roster.

Mystery Gamer #3 (Prediction: 1-3 on Viaduct, 2-4 on Badlands)

“This match shouldn't pose too much of a threat to Hildreth and his crew however with their division 1 contenders RISING out of the ashes and a shaky week in pcws (plus losing a point to div 1 losers trick17 in their official) is the departure of super star scout (who is better than Shifty) Sheepy getting to them? This should turn out to be a great game!”

Mystery Gamer #4 (Prediction: 1-3 Viaduct, 3-6 on Badlands)

"In general Furbo Pandas should be way stronger. Even though they weren't that good vs Trick17,i still expect them to win both maps. Sparkle Motion had some roster changes recently and improved a lot and i could imagine that they might be able to take some points from Furbo Pandas. I think if Furbo Pandas is having a bad day, we might see a little surprise here. Otherwise the Soldiers from Furbo pandas will dominate the mids."

Decerto vs Fresh from Da Morgue (Reverto) #

  • Decerto. Ozone: Turbomonkey, fuo, arc, KillAri, Donut, gf18
  • Team Reverto: BaR, Maffi, Stark, Rising, Alba, e-thug

Thursday 13th June @ 21:15 CEST

My thoughts: I'd say this is the game of the week for Division One, based on the title ambitions of both teams. Decerto have lost out on 6 points due to Karnage folding, and the loss of huhy in their team is perhaps a huge blow for them, although Decerto have ex-Quarantine Demoman Fuo lined up, potentially improving the side assuming he can fit into the team. Statistically speaking Decerto could still win or come 2nd and reach the Prem playoff if they get good results against Reverto and Furbo Pandas, having looked good in pcws before the loss of huhy, there is every chance assuming Fuo fits into the team. Reverto though have the momentum of their reform fresh in their mind, despite it being the second game in 3 days, they look like they may have the stronger pocket soldier in Rising, Maffi's roaming is unproven so far, Stark's damage numbers have been through the roof and I feel will be higher than a rusty Fuo. The real strength for Decerto lying in their scouts, gf18 and Donut, possibly being the best scout combo overall in Division One, e-thug and Alba are no pushovers but it will come down to teamwork, I think Reverto have the better teamwork to take Badlands but Decerto look rock solid on Viaduct in scrims so I think they might take that map assuming they focus Stark like crazy.

Mystery Gamer #3 (Prediction: 2-3 on Viaduct, 3-4 [GC] on Badlands)

“This is definitely the match to watch this week. Not only could it determine who the champion of division 1 will be but it could also be one of the closest matches of the season. Reverto are fresh from the fold land and seem to have swapped stark and maffi around. Not sure if this is a good move or a bad move but either way if Reverto can play at their best they should be able to narrowly take this. Decerto seem to be losing huhy for the next few weeks which could be a massive dent in a team that was growing stronger by the day.

Mystery Gamer #4 (Prediction: 2-3 on Viaduct, 2-5 on Badlands)

"Reverto seems to be quite inactive recently and went through some roster changes. Im not sure if Reverto is in good form right now. Decerto seems to be pretty solid at the moment and it looks like they've improved with their roster changes ( dONut for Origo), but they've also only had draws so far in their officials. I think in the end Reverto will be able to take Badlands and i expect a really close game on Viaduct based on individual plays."
