Is 500fps constant possible in TF2

to settle a debate

I don't think it is possible, because of how unoptimised the game is. Even with the newest and most powerful CPUs I just can't imagine 500fps would be possible (including 6v6 mids)

didn't boink achieve over 500 fps? I guess maybe you mean without a config, but I've seen a couple people get over 500 fps

tell me who these people are that are getting 500 fps constant including mid fights and what is their setup

afaik, the best possible performance for tf2 cpu wise really comes down to clock rate because tf2 doesn't properly take advantage of multiple cores

I'm fairly certain it's pretty much impossible to achieve even 240fps+ in HL fights/pubs without using an fps config.

i hit 500 in pregame with very few players on the server though i cap it at 500 since much more bugs the game out in listen servers

viperafaik, the best possible performance for tf2 cpu wise really comes down to clock rate because tf2 doesn't properly take advantage of multiple cores

im fairly sure that modern processors are well beyond the performance for which tf2 scales well, if you had a cpu that could decode, fetch registers, execute instructions and writeback to registers 'instantly' (that wording doesn't really make sense in practice but you get what i mean) then the game wouldn't get that much more frames than it would now

setsul wrote some long words about this here which is interesting

is it really just the clock rate or the single thread performance?
i think that theorically the top CPUs in this would bring the maximum possible FPS to TF2

Not possible.

IPC depends on the program. Passmark is not TF2.
Anyway I've got an i7-4790K. I can't get 500 fps on 6s mids. Not even close. It seems rather unlikely Skylake would be massively faster in TF2 instead of the usual 10%. The benchmark thread agrees.
500 fps are simply not happening.
Then again you won't get 500 fps in any current game either. The problem isn't that you can't get 500fps, the problem is that TF2 needs a gazillion fps to feel smooth.

Does ultiduo mids count?

For real though with every optimization I could do and overclocking to 4.8GHz (i7-4790k) using the tightest RAM timings I could in 6s I was getting about ~300fps on mid fights. Even if someone won the CPU lottery with the newest intel CPUs and got around say 5.0GHz with the tightest RAM timings possible on DDR4 pretty sure they couldn't achieve over 350fps for mids.

I have an i5 4690k overclocked at 4.5GHz, in ultiduo I can easily get 400fps+, but on gullywash mids I'll drop down to 130. I think it's just a case that tf2 is so unoptimised that even a single extra player in a server can diminish fps a lot.

would be nice though if tf2 was optimized for modern processors.

I don't think it's optimised for any CPU. I'm pretty sure the Pentium 4, which is in the official recommended system requirements, would actually suffer even more from the weirdness.

I'd be happy with a constant 100 fps. Once I have that, I can talk about uppig that number.

I actually tested this on period correct hardware before.

Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2.41ghz 2gb ram 7900 GTX 512mb

1440*900 -default dx98 fov 90

2179 frames 113.608 seconds 19.18 fps (52.14 ms/f) 0.888 fps variability

This game is poorly optimized without configs.

Even with 2 1080ti's and a 6950x, my fps still varies alot. Even with low resolution.
