Speaking as a medic main,
Medic is fun
Medic is not fun with idiots
Nobody wants to play medic in pugs because of the "LOL IM NOT RLY TRYING XD" "ITS OKAY TO BE RETARDED ITS JUST A PUG" attitude that most of the players have. As medic you are limited by your teammates. A good medic can make a good team great, but a good medic cant make a bad team good. This makes the class EXTREMELY frustrating in non-team scenarios.
The problem with medic isn't the class. It is the players.

pretty much what everyone else said; medic is just as fun as anything else when you're playing with people you like, it just blows when your teammates have no bond and are always getting annoyed with each other.

Give the medic a super shotgun and super nail gun so he can frag again. That will make players interested in him :) (joke)

vaniThey made medic more powerful? If you're talking about the +5 health regen then I don't think it'll be a deal breaker or an encouragement - even if its an incredibly good addition.
July_7,_2016_Patch- All Mediguns allow the Medic to match the speed of their heal target

Is medic a less popular class in competitive TF2?
Perhaps yes, it's not a class for the standard fps frag focused player, but some like to be counted on and as such medic can be popular. It's like in all the MMOs or mobas where supports are needed : feeling valuable when you play the role is rewarding in itself.
Are valve attempting to encourage people to play medic by making it more powerful? Is it working?
All I can say is that i don't see more pubbers play medic than before the update. But in matchmaking everyone seems to recognise the need for medics, so at least this part is working.
As for medic becoming more powerful, i don't think it is needed.
Would it not be better to re-work the medic to make the mechanics more fun (such as the crossbow?
Is there even a problem here, or is this all just my gripes as a medic-main?
There is no problem. A lot of fun mechanics are already there : crossbow as you said, quick fix and vaccinator are all fun and rewarding to use properly.

the Crusader's Crossbow is the best/most interesting weapon in TF2 imo. It's the only one where there are skill-based benefits to aiming a small projectile at both teammates and enemies, and the unique reverse damage falloff rewards you more for making harder-to-hit shots. I think it's an incredible example of weapon design done right.

medic would be way more fun if he had a crossbow slot and a syringe slot so you can make clutch long range saves (fun) while not being completely worthless at fighting things outside of melee range (not fun)
(also +fwding people with the syringe gun is fun and the crossbow is far too good to give up)

I do genuinely like medic, even though I kind of wish sometimes that I would have gotten started on a combat class instead.
However, always hearing shit about how med is a class for bad players or how it's the only class girls can play decently is really annoying. It makes me feel like even if I get good, no one will really respect me for it. :/

I play medic because I find DM and MGE dull as fuck but I like surfing and dodging shit and jump maps. Whether valve nerf or buff med, he's still gonna have the same core utility and abilities, and he'll always be a key comp class, and he'll always be a great alternative to those who enjoy teamwork and cohesion or when you don't wanna frag

Medic is fun as long as your team is winning
When your team is losing you are often the easiest to blame and even if they don't blame you you can feel guilty for the outcome of the match and every player that dies on your team

The trick is to yell at your teammates before they get the chance to yell at you :^)

If we're just talking lobbies, just be really commanding. I think most medics are really boring and just heal. Its really fun to make calls as a medic.

Obviously a dumb idea for TF2, but is there a game where you have a sort of medic class that sort of stores damage done and uses it to heal teammates? So you'd get something like a long range nailgun, deal 50 damage and use it to heal your team for 500?

I feel like medic has some of the most game-changing unlocks that actually make a difference (mediguns) and valve is heading in the wrong direction by making all of them more samey with the quick-fix with the movement bonus.
On the other hand nobody uses needles or meele weapons other than ubersaw.

bearodactylMy takeaway from the most recent medic change is that b4nny and slin wanted valve to make it obvious to newer medics that it's a good idea to heal scouts.
???
I don't like the Medic buffs since Tough Break. I think Medic is already extremely powerful and a viable (if not mandatory) part of every single team composition. No buffs needed to be made to make Medic more viable than it was.

I think they should nerf the medic so that the game gets more fast paced as medic picks are more and more likely.
