Medic class unpopular?
1
#1
0 Frags +

Thesis TL;DR

  1. Many players find medic boring (and frustrating) compared to other classes. *
  2. This creates a dearth of players willing to play medic. **
  3. Medic is so powerful that it is mandatory for a team to have one.
  4. In the latest update, valve buffed medic, making it more powerful.

Discussion TL;DR

  1. Is medic a less popular class in competitive TF2?
  2. Are valve attempting to encourage people to play medic by making it more powerful? Is it working?
  3. Would it not be better to re-work the medic to make the mechanics more fun (such as the crossbow?
  4. Is there even a problem here, or is this all just my gripes as a medic-main?

* I play medic. I sometimes find medic boring. I've stuck with medic because when I've looked, most teams are looking for an experienced medic, not an inexperienced scout or soldier. I started playing medic because lobbies would always have a medic slot available and rarely for another class, also my first team needed a medic.

** In pugs and lobbies, I notice there will consistently be fewer players signed up for medic than other classes. Inexperienced medics also get flak in lobbies and pugs for hindering the team. I've seen first time comp TF2 players take last player slot as medic and then get yelled at for making the team lose and have irritated scouts telling them to swap places with them.

1. Well, it is like that but in my opinion, it's not about the class being not fun to play. It's about player's mindset. For example, I used to play A LOT of Dota 2 a few years ago and I rarely had any fun playing as support. Sure, it's important to create space for your core players there but that's just not what I enjoy doing.
In TF2 the situation is pretty much the same. Some people (myself included) just don't like playing support role.

2. Yes, that's exactly what they are doing and I'm pretty sure it's working. More fun playing the class means more people that are willing to play/main it.

3,4. These are the kind of questions that only an other medic main can answer. All I can say is that reworking the core med mechanics is going to require too much effort and might break the game/piss off too many people that enjoy playing the class as it is right now.

TL;DR - Damneasy's post above.

I like to be shooting things, which I think is the reason most players play this game.
As medic, you're depending on your team a lot of the time, even if you heal them as good as you can and hit most of your arrows, there's still a chance the scout you're healing or pocket will either just run away or go to places that would put you in a bad position if you try to heal them, or leave you alone to bombing soldiers, which even if you hit every fat surf sometimes it still isn't enough to survive. You're too dependent on your team and communication for surviving and a load of other things so playing medic isn't really appealing to most players unless they're in a good team. The class is powerful enough as it is an you can have really good movement\positioning to improve your suvivability but medic gameplay isn't generally the kind of thing people come looking for when they come into tf2 even when being incontestable that it is necessary for the current meta game.

TL;DR
Medic depends too much on his teammates so that's why there are not many in lobbies\pugs. You can't really be "fragging" as Medic. It is and was powerful enough and very necessary since the metagame revolves around ubers, but there isn't much Valve can change to make it "More fun" as the type of gameplay that players look for is preference.

Medic is really fun for me even though i dont get the phat frags. I find it fun how you basically control the game by how you heal. Its really interesting 'learning' how to be a good med but once you get into the routine of it, its only really fun with friends as mentioned above. So maybe if there were more play styles with the class instead of the heavy standard, I think it would be a lot more fun, i.e. shade with kritz, and skye using vac at last. So diff primaries/melees that add to how the medic play style is ( and i am not saying battle medic but more ways to support the team team types weps) then medic will be more attractive so you can chose what play style fits you best instead of the cookie cutter, crosss bow, uber and uber saw. - 420 hour med main

I like medic. Playing smart, and being able to influence how your team moves is enjoyable.

Plus zooming around on a scout with the new buff is a lot of fun.

IDK in my experience its other player's mindsets too. "Medic is an easy class." Many other players don't respect medic mains, Doing well isn't as clear cut as the other classes. I've heard multiple times from different medic mains ranging from steel to Invite saying they don't know if they did good or not or if they are really improving as medic(Nursey has said this). It's hard to give medic a first try because its such an important class, and usually people are very toxic when things go wrong. An example is when Console (a low-mid open medic) dropped an uber resulting in a tie on PugChamp and B4nny flipped out cursing at him and calling him an idiot. (BTW Console has quit medic) Other players easily blame the medic for their faults, even if its not the medic's fault, and if these medics are inexperienced they might think that medic isn't for him/her or they are just bad. I'm not disagreeing with you on the fact that most players don't like medic, but what I am saying is that the population of medic's is then decreased even further due to allot of these things. IDK maybe I'm biased because I'm a medic main but allot of this stuff has happened to me but I have seen many others experience the same.

Most players want to be in the action, fragging people. By doing this, they feel that they are helping their team directly. When they play support, what they see, most of the time, is the back of their teammates. They don't see or feel that they are helping. even though they obviously are. That's the main problem of the support role in games and it's hard to fix that without making them ridiculously overpowered.

That's why I don't think there is a way to make medic less boring unless you completely rework him. Sure. by giving him more mobility and health, it's going to be less frustrating for players to play it, but that's not the main reason why people don't play medic. You could make him have more powerful weapons, but that's not what he is about. You would have to remake the class in it's entirety and that's probably never going to happen.

TL:DR - The core concept of medic is what makes him boring/frustrating to play. There is no way to fix it unless you rework the class completely.

SlicerogueDoing well isn't as clear cut as the other classes. I've heard multiple times from different medic mains ranging from steel to Invite saying they don't know if they did good or not or if they are really improving as medic(Nursey has said this).

I agree.
In regards to a medic's skill, it's similar to support players in CS:GO, where it's very hard to explain to new players why supports are good players and why they are not doing damage, getting kills etc (as they are setting up other players for kills, throwing nades). This means it can be hard to tell a good support from a bad one, like with medic, as they are not doing damage and getting frags, along with the fact that often deaths, heals per minute and even drops can be more the teams fault than the medic.

medic is a lot about just positioning, tracking ubers, and movement and it's much more obvious when a medic is inexperienced compared to an experienced one. Most of the time in pugs unless your pocket is flat-out stupid they have some basis on what they complain about and you can always improve. In regards to medic mains dropping out, I feel like it's moreso baised on them refusing to accept mistakes and hearing what others have to say, at least in my short experience with console. The only rework I wanna see happen is something that makes the other melees primaries better so you can diversify how the class participates in fights.

when i still played this game, i was a medic main that often did not have team. most scrim schedules did not work with mine. it was quite difficult to improve as playing lobbies and pugs and such were an awful way to practice because you are not playing with your team. sure, you can possibly work on mechanics like movement, positioning, and MAYBE gamesense, but there was no way of grinding practice like you can with dps classes, in training maps, mge, jump maps, and so forth. a lack of a way for me to feel sense of accomplishment and improvement, among other things, made me stop playing this game.

Playing support/medic classes in games is fun and enjoyable for me, there's nothing more satisfying than hearing "Sick arrows; Nice pop; Nice save" from the people you're playing with.

People should appreciate people who play Medic, if you're in a PUG and its not starting because people have been waiting 20 mins for Medic(s) and then you (and other person) join as medic and you play a game, by the end or during the pug, if someone is complaining about you, the most reasonable thing to say in your defence is "If not me, this pug would've taken 20 more minutes to start, if you think you can do better than me then add up as medic and you won't be complaining, but if you don't want to then shut the fuck up and let me do my thing.".

And that is why people will not lean towards playing as a medic, because all they expect that if you or your team does something wrong, you'll get blamed for everything and that will put you off from playing Medic.

Despite how the game turned out, Dirty Bomb did a good job with making the medic classes fun to play. The healing abilities are quick to activate, and very powerful, so you spend most of your time being a less-effective assault class. You are still supposed to play passive and prioritize your life, but the mechanics just allowed you to spend a lot of time shooting in addition to healing.

I think the biggest issue with med is that it doesn't have too many mechanics that give you immediate feedback whether you've done well, or not.
Like how, when a fragging class gets a kill, you get instant gratification. You know you did something right, and you can follow up on it.
With medic, some of the closest things you have to that mindset are probably hitting someone with a crossbow or potentially surfing a rocket, but there really isn't much else.

The medic class has a very high skill ceiling but even at that peak of a skill ceiling there is very little reward. There is nothing Valve can do to fix this inherent problem in a support class. The class is extremely simple to get into with a lot of cool mechanics backing behind it to make it feel slightly more complex. I really like where medic is at right now and I hope they don't do anything too drastic to inspire people to medic more.

I started playing medic for the same reason as you because in pugs and lobbies (back when tf2mix and tf2lobby.com were things) there were never people who wanted to play medic. I started off pubbing and found I most enjoyed soldier but once I played more medic I found it fun to try to survive and escape by surfing/dodging and as others have said it is very satisfying to get crossbow kills on people chasing you or save the round by getting an ubersaw. In regards to people blaming the medic for everything I agree that the majority of the time a pocket can tell when his medic is inexperienced and isn't doing exactly what he wants, but that's not to say that it's not much easier to blame your med than taking responsibility yourself. At the end of the day there are always going to be people who enjoy playing medic regardless of whatever bullshit people say about them, but this certainly can have a negative influence and dissuade newer players from playing the class.
My takeaway from the most recent medic change is that b4nny and slin wanted valve to make it obvious to newer medics that it's a good idea to heal scouts. Of course matchmaking medics are going to want to heal scouts now that they get to run faster while doing it. I don't think anything in particular should be done to make medic (or any class for that matter) less boring, changes should be based on balance and not whether or not certain players have the patience to learn how to play the class well.
The only real issue I see is a lack in diversity in weapon selection. Ever since the crossbow got passive reload nearly every medic has used it, and kritz is situational to the point that most lower level teams don't know how to play around it correctly. Lucrative is the only medic who I remember purposely using a melee other than the ubersaw, but the problem is that even if for example weapons like the vita saw got rebalanced they may still be overpowered to the point that they get banned (or at least they change the meta to that point). I could see merit in buffing kritz or nerfing quick fix to the point where it's unbannable and doesn't completely break the meta like s14 lan. If teams ran kritz more often there would be far less uber stalemates and it would promote dry pushing and generally more aggressive playstyles. Even things like spawning on kritz and building when both medics die on mid makes the game far more interesting and necessitates pushing. Some teams/medics only feel comfortable playing cookie cutter with uber but I feel that at least trying out other strategies is important, which is why I personally try to try kritz whenever I see a situation that warrants it, at the very least to make the game more enjoyable for myself.

TL;DR medic main syndrome (MMS) is a very real thing and people need to stop blaming inexperienced medics for the teams problems if they want people to actually learn how to play the class at lower levels

needing to rely on other people for survivebility is always frustrating, atleast when you die as a mobile class that can deal a lot of damage it's mostly your fault and you can control it, on medic it's much more difficult and less rewarding.

What makes Mercy so fun is like 10% the clutch revives and 90% the ability to fly. It puts a lot of her survival in her own hands rather than the hands of her teammates like Medic does in TF2. Sure you'll do a lot better as Mercy with your team looking out for you, helping you get around faster by peeking, but it's just an added bonus and you can still get around without their help pretty decently. You just can't do that as our lovely German physiatrist and that's why he's so stressful and frustrating to play - your survival is 99% your teammate's responsibility.

interestingly enough, the ability to pickup weapons off of bodies could've been great for the kritz since it wouldn't force people to stick with it to maintain as good of an uber advantage. its a shame they fucked up the initial implementation.

There is almost always 1 out of 6 players who either want or who are willing to play medic, so it usually isn't a problem. While Highlander medic sucks, sixes medic is actually really fun when you have a good team.

You have to be open-minded to play with this class. For this reason that there are few medics, because you have to know how to deal with various types of players and criticism will always appear, whether valid or not. Now, the medic responsibility level is the highest among all classes. If a beginner want to start playing doctor, he will have to train a lot to learn when to hold an uber, pop, surfing, positioning, take good shots with arrows and all this combined with the pressure imposed by the players until you get a level where all these skills are natural. For example, a scout beginner, until he reaches a good level, he will always have another scout on his team to make up for their lack of experience, or his mistakes to learning will not be as important as those of a medic.Another fact is the focus, i mean,if i play a match without proper concentration, the probability of me making a mistake increases a lot and that's why the class is the most difficult in the game. But as a medic main, there's nothing in TF2 more fun than playing doctor and I think more people should try it.

I main medic, and while I do go play soldier (well more like roamer cause I don't like pocket), it's mostly cause jumping around and getting med drops is fun as roamer. I don't find medic boring in anyway except with my own team that can't keep me alive from roamers that shouldn't get me -.- (ugc iron is fun :D) The crossbow is already kinda fun for me, idk how it can be made more fun unless it had a secondary fire with an insane 10 bolt launch after healing like 1000 health or some shit.

i think there being a shortage of medics is really an exaggerated issue. a ton of people flock to medic when they realize they have nowhere near the dm they thought they did because they think it will be easy as shit (i did this). if you look on ugc forums and even here it's not like there are much less medic posts than any other class, and demo has way less

also the people who say medic is hard because you need good gamesense and positioning are stupid you need those on every class and you need to have good dm on the other classes

They made medic more powerful? If you're talking about the +5 health regen then I don't think it'll be a deal breaker or an encouragement - even if its an incredibly good addition. Medic is less popular in pugs, mixes and lobbies as you get to do different things from the other classes, such as not deathmatching 24/7 and being defenseless a lot of the time if left unattended. Usually those things are more frequent than the "fun parts" of medic like surviving against all odds or hitting clutch shots for example. That combined with the more chaotic nature of pugs/mixes/lobbies as opposed to scrims usually makes the class -less fun- to play. Personally I would enjoy playing medic in a prem/invite/ mix or scrim, or with some good friends or whatever, but the kind of environment you're describing isn't like that.

In these kind of games but people are usually willing to play medic if they feel that they can rely on the players they play with. Its rough because if you feel like the game is a chore and you're playing medic if you start throwing or doing weird things it impacts the game a lot. I feel that the class is less popular mostly because of these things, its understandable.
