#116 mayweather v pacquiao in Off Topic

I'm so glad I stayed up until 3AM to watch this fight, having to wake up at 6 today. It was definitely worth it.

#28 TF2 update for 4/29/15 in TF2 General Discussion
emkayThe demo playback system is really neat.

If you put a tick ahead of your current one (say, putting in 20000 when you're at 10000), the game will speed up to that tick for you automatically. It is similar to doing a 600% playback, or host_framerate 1.

As for rewinding, it's a bit odd - it restarts the demo from 0, then fast forwards the game to the tick you entered, May take a little while to get to those bookmarks at tick 102000, haha.

Still a great update either way. :)

That's because demos are basically a dump of the network during the game. Instead of reading input from the keyboard/mouse/server, the game reads it from the demo file, and then runs as if you were in a normal game. To have true rewinds, you'd have to be able to reverse user commands: "given the current world state, apply the reverse of these actions". To have seeking (jumping directly to a different time in the demo), demos would have to record full updates periodically (I-frames). Source doesn't do any of these things, AFAIK.

#19 Defrag TF2 in Q/A Help

A hard drive defrag and a GCF defrag are very different things. The VPK file format does not have internal fragmentation (GCF did), which is why defrag was removed for Steampipe games - it doesn't do anything.

Defragging your spinning disk may give you performance benefits, but it's entirely unrelated to game data fragmentation in the way it used to be with GCF files: with them, you'd have to defrag the hard drive AND the game, because GCF has internal fragmentation.

#16 120fps on 60hz Monitor in TF2 General Discussion

FWIW, most of the arguments in this thread are intimately tied to how idTech/GoldSrc/Source are designed, which might explain your impression that:

BentomatAs far as I know the TF2 community is the only one that really cares about these things enough to use low-end graphics settings on a mid-high end rig.

#9 Most Dangerous Situation You've Ever Been In? in Off Topic

When I was younger I was in a car accident at ~100km/h (~60mph), my mom lost control of the car and it did a 180° across the road and then rolled on the other side of the road, stopping sideways. That was the most dangerous but nobody got hurt, only minor bruises

A couple years ago I was practicing parkour and fell face first into cement from a ~2m drop, I broke a couple of teeth and a finger, but it could've easily been much worse. I've also almost drowned in rivers and creeks a couple of times.

KarlTwo years ago I tried to swim 75 yards underwater without breathing and with about 5 yards to go I passed out underwater and drowned. I had to be resuscitated by the lifeguards and taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

People who swim a lot need to watch out for this shit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shallow_water_blackout

#17 Jeremy Clarkson suspended from the BBC in Off Topic
SheepylolThe show will fail without Clarkson. BBC are only hurting themselves considering the amount of viewers top gear consistently pulls in. Its the only TV show I actually watch and I doubt that they will get rid of Clarkson yet. If they do sack him it will be a lot of money lost.

I thought the BBC was a statutory company and made money (almost) exclusively from the TV license fees? Do they even run ads?
