#68 LIST OF USEFUL TF2 TIPS in TF2 General Discussion

Prefer walls over the ground when rocket-jumping, unless you want to go straight up. It will give you more speed (and consequently reach). Be aware of the extra damage.

Don't hug walls, your shadow may be seen if opponents have non blobby shadows turned on (corollary: enable non blobby shadows yourself by setting r_shadowrendertotexture to 1).

Turn off the music: every sound in TF2 is useful information.

Useful to me, YMMV: You can stop the main menu song with "sv_cheats 1; stopsound; sv_cheats 0".

#4 Learning web design in TF2 General Discussion
reillyDon't buy a book. You can learn everything you'd need here, and it makes a great reference later on w3schools

NO! FORGET YOU EVER HEARD ABOUT A "W3SCHOOLS" D: D: D: D:

The Mozilla Developer Network (https://developer.mozilla.org) is a much better resource. Here are some other useful links: http://w3fools.com/#what-should-be-done

#40 TF2 Web Spectator in TF2 General Discussion
blueeand vtable's doing good work, adding his changes when he's finished

Thanks! :)

FWIW, my plans for now are:
1) Get my VPS running again so I can test in a real server
2) Make sure I didn't break Linux/Windows with the OS X changes
3) Create a public instance so other people can test/give feedback
4) Binary WebSockets in client and server
5) Sigscanning instead of offsets

#32 TF2 Web Spectator in TF2 General Discussion

I see. The downside of doing it as a VPS is that you have to deal with all kinds of silliness in Valve's APIs, and if a server update breaks some obscure part of your plugin, you have to fix it yourself, which can be quite… entertaining.

Anyway, I'm messing around with the code, I got OS X builds working and will create pull requests if I add or fix anything important. By the way, it is generally not a good idea use libstdc++ in server plugins, because of ABI compatibility issues with different Linux distros. Instead of std::vector you can use Valve's CUtlVector (see the non-whitespace changes in https://github.com/reubenmorais/webspec/commit/4ec23407f2193d4ea5d40d7ac2325b1c285289ae).

Amazing work, man! I'm wondering why you're converting the SourceMod plugin to a VSP?

Edit: More specifically, if the reason is performance, why you're not moving to a SM extension.

#32 Oldschool TOURNY in TF2 General Discussion

I'm fairly sure everything mentioned so far can be easily implemented server-side. I wasn't around when comp TF2 started, but I can help with modding if that's needed. Should be very fun to watch!

#21 New player seeks emense knowledge in Q/A Help

Program Files\Steam\steamapps\{your username}\team fortress 2\tf\cfg -> your config files go here, autoexec.cfg is executed when you spawn, class_name.cfg is executed when you spawn as that class

Note - this will change soon: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7388-QPFN-2491

Configs to give you higher/more stable FPS: http://fakkelbrigade.eu/chris/configs/
(Read the config file, it has conditional settings that you might not want, it also has settings that depend on your network quality)

Custom HUDs highlight what's important and hide what isn't. I recommend Omp's omphud: http://rawr.am/tf2hud/ (Google "TF2 HUD" for more)

Play in public servers, try to learn how every class fits in the game.

Competitive TF2 is either 6x6 (called 6s) or 9x9 (highlander). The class limits involved in both types define how games work. Read about them or download/watch games to learn about it. Some general links:
http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Competitive_play
http://teamfortress.tv/articles/view/52-introduction-to-competitive-tf2-part-1

http://teamfortress.tv/streams - watch experienced (or not) players in competitive settings to learn how the game (and team communication) works.

http://tf2lobby.com is a good way to start playing in competitive settings.

http://atf2.org will connect you to the main IRC channels where North American PUGs (Pick-Up Games) are organized and played, read the FAQs in the each channel's topic for more information.

Welcome to TF2, have a nice stay! :)
