#353 The 120Hz Monitor Thread in Hardware
erkstonhere's a chart that shows input lag for a bunch of different monitors: http://s15.postimg.org/ru8quqjez/laggy.png

42 ms is high, but probably playable. i'd make sure you'll be able to play games at 120hz with anti aliasing, cause 1080p at 32" means low dpi

Ok, thanks. If anyone else has an opinion on whether 42 ms is too high or not please tell me.

How would I go about determining the second thing you mentioned? I'm not very experienced with this stuff. Thanks!

#351 The 120Hz Monitor Thread in Hardware

Follow-up to my last post...

I found this TV: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I94IRC2&ie=UTF8

According to http://www.rtings.com/info/fake-refresh-rates-samsung-clear-motion-rate-vs-sony-motionflow-vs-lg-trumotion it actually has true 120hz. Can anyone confirm that this tv would actually function equivalently to a 120hz monitor?

Research indicates that the input lag is 42 ms, is that considered prohibitively bad for gaming?

Thanks for the help!

#348 The 120Hz Monitor Thread in Hardware

Are there any 32" true 120hz TVs on the market? For a variety of reasons I would really prefer something about 32" both because it gets used to play movies and as my main monitor for gaming. Everything I've found that claims to be 120hz is actually 60hz but with interpolation.

Thanks for the help.

#7 75hz downgrades resolution? in Hardware
ComangliaIf you input everything manually (and optimize) over single link dvi and vga 75Hz can be achieved at 1680 x 1050, 1440 x 900 is a lot easier to get though. For a 16 x 9 res 1366 x 768 should easily be possible.

I'm not good at this stuff, so bear with me. What precisely do I need to do to get this to work? Currently the monitor is hooked up over hdmi, do I need to replace that with another cable and try it? Sorry for technical incompetence, I appreciate the help.

#1 75hz downgrades resolution? in Hardware

So, I recently discovered my monitor can put out 75hz. I'm trying to enable that via the AMD Catalyst Control Center.

But, when I do change refresh rate to 75hz, it changes my resolution from the native 1366 x 768 to 1024 x 768. That makes everything the image quality really poor. Does anyone know why this is happening, and how I can fix it so I can get 75hz with 1366 x 768?

Thanks very much for your help, I really appreciate how helpful the community has been to me!

[I have an R9 270 video card and I don't remember the monitor model off the top of my head but I'll post it as soon as I can if anyone wants to know it.]

#15 Buying a PC in Hardware

Thanks for your advice but it worked out. I called customer support, turns out the boot was set to legacy instead of uefi for some reason?? Anyhow I changed it and its working now so yay.

Thanks for all the help anyway.

#12 Buying a PC in Hardware

Thanks for your advice, but newegg had a promo which made this as cheap as other sites.

Anyway, the computer just arrived, and when I try to boot it says "boot filename not received"

I confirmed the boot order is correct, and this indicates that either the OS (windows 7 home prem) was not preinstalled (really super unlikely although they did give me a windows 7 disk). OR, that the hard disk itself is dead and that's why it cant boot from it.

I already opened the system up and confirmed that this is not a wiring problem from the motherboard to the hard disk. So I think the disk itself is probably dead (probably from rough transit I guess?) so I'm going to send it back, but if anyone has a better idea of something I missed I'm very appreciative.

Thanks again for your help!

Edit: it now says "PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable" when I try to boot. This seems to confirm my suspicion that the system cant read from the hard drive.

#6 Buying a PC in Hardware
ComangliaAlkalineComangliaAlmost no one sells Windows 7 preinstalled anymore so this will be pretty difficult to find one...

Hell microsoft announce no more preinstalls for Windows 7 Basic, Home Premium, or Ultimate. Pro is the only one available now.

Yeah tell me about it. I have found this on newegg that looks reasonable:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883156304

^^It's a bit expensive but thats okay. Can anyone confirm it would run TF2 and possibly CS:GO at 120 fps, obviously with fps configs? It has windows 7 home prem but that's okay.

Also I do have a monitor. It's not 120hz because my parents are funding this stuff and my dad thinks 120hz is useless but oh well. It is pretty big though so I guess thats good. Hopefully next year i can get a 120 hz so i figured i would i try to get a desktop now that can easily put 120 fps.

With ease assuming you run the power setting in highperformance, and probably without even using a CFG.

Awesome! Thanks for the help, I'm going to order it now. :)

#1 Buying a PC in Hardware

I'm sorry, I know there are tons of posts like this out there but I couldn't find one like this so I decided to post.

My old, current desktop is dying, and I need a new one. I'm really busy right now w/ work + school, and still being in high school my parents are willing to buy me one as long as I keep the cost reasonable (under 1000 would be ideal). So I'm going to buy a PC instead of building one. Please, don't tell me to build one because it isn't going to happen right now.

It needs to have Windows 7 Pro. It needs to put out 120+ frames on TF2 but that's the only game I really play so it doesn't need to have an incredible GPU, although currently I have a GTX 460 and I would like to upgrade from that if possible. I would also really prefer a 4th gen i5 or i7 or the AMD equivalent.

I'm really sorry, I hate whining wanting other people to do my work for me. But I've been looking on Newegg and other places for a couple days now and I can't find what I'm looking for. Thanks for your help.

#13 5v5 AR in TF2 General Discussion

I had a few thoughts about AR. It's entirely possible other people have said these already but I wanted to get them out here nonetheless.

1. Make banning Medic prohibited. This obviously isn't a huge issue, but it will happen once in a while if you make AR into a league or even just a pug group or whatever. No medic makes the game way less enjoyable to watch imo, so it might make sense to just make sure no one bans it.

2. To follow up on what other people have said about weapon bans, why not have one primary, one secondary, and possibly one melee weapon ban per team (I'm worried banning gunslinger or GRU would make engy/heavy unviable)? So if engy and sniper are banned, then there will be six weapon bans in total, and they will all be on the seven remaining classes. That could encourage different class bans (which as ninjanick said is a problem), for example someone could ban short circuit which was the main reason engy got banned.

3. Something which many teams have done to great effect is to almost capture the point and then get off it until you need the cap. I would like to see the capture progress revert really quickly, to discourage that behavior. It seems like it would motivate more aggressive play and make it more difficult for one team to sac into another and then have the last player recap. I could definitely be wrong on this one, it's just an idea I had.

4. Other people have definitely said this, but a (3 second maybe?) delay on the minicrits while on point is really needed.

Thanks to all the people putting time and effort into this! Even if it doesn't grow into something big, it's really encouraging to see innovation coming from within comp TF2.

#2 Net Neutrality in Site Discussion

This happened on September 10th. And yeah, I don't really think there's much point adding the widget at this point. It's a great cause, but I don't see why we should participate in a big, day-long campaign two days after the campaign took place.
