I wanna try getting in to pugs, but I dont know what to expect, really. Thus far it seems pugchamp is the best but it also seems that there is a high chance you wont get picked and wont be able to play, and you will have to play really good players, but I dont see any other alternative that is actually semi-active?

Try to arrange mixes with people on ur skill level (probably the best option) or just keep adding till u get picked. If ur not a notable player, getting picked in pugs is just about patience.

What about TF2Center and TF2 Pro league? They seem to be very inactive, but are they actually?

Not sure what your experience is. For the sake of this I'll assume you're brand new
I only started playing pugs recently after adding up for a couple months and having a 90%+ unpicked stat. it takes a while.
TF2center and TF2PL are options, though they're not the best. It'll teach you the very basics like where to hold and how to not overextend into multiple people but in general the games are not very organised. Good place to start if you're new to this, though you'll want to move on after a couple months. TF2PL will be more balanced but I'm uncertain how alive it is, TF2center has a large range in skill levels so you might end up against or with the entire spectrum of skill levels.
There's an EU mixes discord. I've not tried it myself but they organize multiple games each day and from what I hear there's occasionally open/brand new players in them. From what I've seen so far most players were somewhere between low-mid that play regularly. At least the few names I recognized. I'll PM you an invite link.
I cannot tell you what you should expect because I'm not familiar with the regulars there. Though they'll probably be welcoming. If you're not comfortable playing immediately you could ask them if you can spectate and listen to a team's comms to get an idea of what it's like (people with admin rights should be able to move you into other channels even if the voice channel has reached its player limit)

TFNEW - JWB is the Head Admin, this runs some double mixes for new to low players with a few higher experienced in and around it. It also does Newbie cups and trnys. Add him and see what he says.

If there aren't inhouses running, look to ring for other teams as its a good way to meet people in the community and adjust to a team environment without actually being on a team. If you're unable to pug or ring, it's wayyyyy better to play TF2Center than Faceit, unless you're a med main. If you're nice on TF2Center and ask for help, more experienced players are willing to give advice. The important thing is DO NOT MED AS A NEW PLAYER. Some people through tantrums when new players are on med, more so than just being annoyed but actually reporting you and ragequitting and stuff. Overall, TF2Center should be your last resort for pick up games, but are not completely worthless at a low level.

I just wanna play a serious pug, not have to interact socially. I'm sure many others can relate .
