Hey guys,

Two things that have always bothered are low frames and random/sudden frame drops, especially when it comes to that stutter glitch we all love when TF2 just freezes up and all you hear is an audio loop before it starts working again 15 seconds later. I built a brand new computer thinking my new setup would help me avoid this problem but it's been recurring lately and I have no idea what to do about it. I'm capped at 120fps and it usually doesn't drop below that except when it freezes up as previously stated and nothing works for 15-20 seconds.

I've tried many things including windowed mode, dx9, etc and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my fps config (I use chris's maxframes). I've messed with a few graphic settings with no luck but I've realized that every time it happens my console is flooded with error messages. Here are just a few examples:

Does anyone know what causes these errors to occur or of any way to stop them? Any input at all would be greatly appreciated.

Computer specs:

CPU: i7-3770k
Motherboard: ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77
RAM: 2x Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 670 2GB
PSU: Corsair Professional 850W 80 PLUS Silver Certified ATX12V / EPS12V

Has nothing to do with those errors more than likely. Sounds like a CPU spike more than anything. I'd check your CPU usage while playing and maybe change your virtual memory page size.

Thanks for the feedback! May I ask what values you would recommend for the Initial and Maximum sizes? If you need more info I will happily provide it.

Page size actually looks fine. You can manually change it to min16-max16GB, but it probably won't matter.

You can try playing with task manager on another computer and checking for spikes and seeing what's causing it. If it's system, might actually be the page size. Or power saving/management, check for those in case (disable any, use full power).

Also, dunno if this is relevant:

Thanks a lot Browny, i'll be sure to try all of those things. I'll post something here if I find a solution!

you have 8GB of RAM and that's more than enough so I don't think the problem is with virtual paging size at all. Maybe try moving steam to another hard drive and run your games from there? The last time I had problems with tf2 freezing up on me was because of bad sectors issue.

Edit: also try defragging tf2 gcf files first?

I disable page file completely because I have 8 GB of ram, I find it helps with stuttering. Only problem with this is it stores the data in your ram, and if that fills up, your computer does weird shit, but the only time I run out of memory is by playing Arma 2 for 4+ hours straight so it's nothing to worry about.

Console errors aren't the cause of stuttering though. By glancing over the errors themselves it doesn't seem like it's related.

It's hard to diagnose the issue because you might not be specific enough about it. You say the issue is TF2 freezes up for 15 seconds straight, as in you're playing perfectly fine, and all of the sudden the game decides to freeze up for 15 seconds, and then it goes back to normal? Or does your game completely crash and have to be restarted? It sounds like it may be some kind of hardware issue.

Stuttering could be related to HD activity, or your video card. One thing I do is set my max frames rendered ahead to 1 (using Radeonpro). For Nvidia you can find that in your control panel and set it globally. One last thing is to update and make sure all the drivers are installed and are at the latest. Especially drivers you don't think might be important, like sound drivers, intel chipset drivers, or ethernet drivers.

It's about overheating. My old laptop used to do that on every game I played. The longer I played, the more often it happened. I bought a laptop stand with a fan and it was all fixed.

Not a tech expert by most means, but I think frowny might be right. Download Core Temp and run it while you play, then check the max temps. If you run in windowed mode, try alt tabbing if you can and seeing if there's a temp spike or something. if it turns out to be that, your best bet is checking to see if any of your case fans aren't spinning.

Update:

So I've tried a couple of solutions here and there and nothing has really worked out for me so far. I've actually tried deleting my Team Fortress 2 folder ENTIRELY and re-installing the game. I kept my hud and my cfg folder but everything else was deleted and re-installed. I am still encountering this bug. It hasn't changed at all. This leads me to believe that it's either being caused by something in my cfg folder or something in my system.

I checked Core Temp when it happened and I didn't witness any temperature spikes. However with my task manager open, I can see my CPU Usage spike to about 60-70% while the bug is occurring. Not sure if this sheds some light on anything. Still looking for suggestions~

Also I can upload my config if that helps.

Look closely at what programs are spiking the cpu that high. I went through page files, defraging gfc files, shutting programs down, safe mode with networking, different drivers, bare minimum specs(1 ram stick, no video/sound card, etc.) and all of that to fix it.

Then I got an ssd. I just tossed it up to being that a regular drive couldn't move the massive game files fast and/or efficient enough. Not telling you to buy one but if you have $100 to spare look into it.

Sounds like a hardware issue. Does it do this in any other game? I've had issues caused by hardware that only gave me problems in certain games (more notably the demanding ones like Metro and Crysis)

Ok I had this same problem and I can say that this has not happened to me since I did the following things. I can't point out which one did the fix because I did them all right after each other so I will list them. Also they were not done in this order, I just wrote in order of what I remembered doing and what I think did the most help.

1. I got a can of compressed air and cleaned the inside of my pc which was full of dust, hair, and dead bugs. Make sure to spray every thing from every angle so everything gets out. Also with that said make sure the direct you are shooting leads out of the pc.

2. Disconnected and reconnected all powercords from my power supply to the other units in the pc.

3. Used a youtube video on how to fix the issue which was described in eerie similarity to my problems. I will try to find that and post it for you.

4. Switched to Cyzers version of Chris's High fps settings. You can download that off cyzers twitch.tv

5. Tried different huds until I found out that Omp's and Broesel's huds both had this problem less than any other hud for some odd reason.

That is all, I hope that this helps.
