I'm not sure if this is normal, but every time I open my game and change mat_specular from 1 to 0 it changes all of my video settings to high and turns on bloom. I'm not sure why this is happening. I also have this weird stuttering with my game even though it's running at a stable 300 fps. I'm not sure if these things are connected. Please help.

What's the value of mat_dxlevel before and after you do mat_specular 0?

I opened my game and put mat_dxlevel into console and got 91. Then I opened and checked my video settings. Then I pressed close and ok. My video settings changed without me changing anything and my mat_dxlevel changed to 95. I'm really confused. I didn't even change mat_specular.

What are your launch options? And are you using a config?

Go to your advanced options, disable steam cloud sync (or whatever it was called)

I already have steam cloud sync off. My launch options are -novid and -console. I am using comanglia's stability config. I reinstalled tf2 and deleted my cfg folder and custom folder but that hasn't fixed the problem either.

Delete those folders and then verify game cache, then launch with -autoconfig.

does it still change stuff to high if you put mat_Specular 0 to the autoexec? try putting mat_Specular at the top of the config

I deleted the Team Fortress 2 folder from my steam games and reinstalled the game. I put Comanglia's Stability config in my cfg folder and autoexec. I also put mat_specular 0 in my autoexec and -autoconfig in my launch option. When I opened my game it was set to 1 still. Changing it from 1 to 0 however did not change my video setting this time.

edit: nvm changing it from 1 to 0 did change it.

Why did you put Comanglia's config in the config folder? Just test it with a clean TF2 to see if Comanglia's config is causing the issue.

open your cfg folder, go to "config", not autoexec, search for "mat_specular", if its there make it 0
