just setup my computer with a new wifi card (campus for some reason decided to use wifi instead of updating its ethernet infrastructure or w.e.)
did a speedtest and got insane up/down and good ping

tested a dm server earlier tonight and got relatively stable ping (30ish to chi) but now its spiking all over from 50-150 (jump servers, pugchamp)
tried the generic drivers and the ones from the manufacturer havent yet tried the chipset ones
tried a fix to disable auto configuration for wifi which is supposed to make it stop searching for wifi spots which seemed to work but i guess didnt fix the problem
i used my phone for a pug a few days ago before the network card came and had much more stable ping but it was using data lol
tl;dr am i just fucked if im on wifi and there's a heavy load from other people in the dorm or is there something I can do

Apparently, the problem is caused by a big incompatibility between Windows' wifi stack and the university's wireless router setup.

I'm having a similar thing at my apartment :/ even with an Ethernet cable I can't get a stable connection for anything (ping isn't an issue but consistent connection is) so I've just decided to move to benchwarmer for my team

installed drivers from the chipset manufacturer and found the ping spikes to be a little less frequent, dunno if it entirely fixed the issue but looks like drivers do play a decent role in these things

u were offline so ill post here instead. you can get a cheap (~$50) router and turn it into a wireless bridge, which basically connects to ur schools wifi and allows you to use the ethernet ports on the router to plug your desktop into. to my knowledge these are more powerful than wireless adapters, ymmv. i stole my previous neighbors wifi for years using a netgear n600 in wireless bridge mode, oops dont tell him. theres lots of info on google but ill just link you one article: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-turn-an-old-router-into-a-wireless-bridge/
