Just got back from a visit to Valve. Got lunch with a few members of the TF team, and had some very interesting conversations.
I wasn't told many specifics of the next update -- and anything I was told I won't share -- but I will say that, following my conversation with them, they know what they're doing. The way they find, identify, and solve problems is very impressive.
I do NOT know their plans for competitive, or future updates, or anything -- and anything I say regarding the future of TF2 is from my perspective on their development process, NOT from specific update details that I know. The next update could be terrible or amazing, big or small, and I have no idea what their real plans are.
All in way of saying: we have some good things to look forward to for the future of TF2.

What I mean is that Valve does care about competitive matchmaking -- my bad. That is, it's not something they're putting minimal effort into.

What I mean is that Valve does care about competitive matchmaking -- my bad. That is, it's not something they're putting minimal effort into.

This isn't necessarily anything new. I don't want to give the impression that "all of tf2's problems will go away!!" because that'll never happen. A "problem" is just something in tf2 that should be changed -- which every single patch does. I can't tell you which "problems" they care about, or what their solutions are -- but I can tell you that when they identify and prioritize a problem, they're really good at solving it.
Perhaps they don't solve it in the way you might want them to, but they don't seem to just make decisions for no reason.

This is probably not something you'd be privy to discuss, but did they talk to you about your websites? I was under the impression that Valve would not approve of marketplace.tf as it seems to me (though I've never used it) a superior version of the SCM for people who were gonna spend (real, non-Steam) money anyway.

A bit. All I can say is what b4nny said before: Valve won't do a major or sponsor a tournament unless it makes sense to do so. If people don't care about comp tf2, it doesn't make sense for Valve to be involved in it.
