I have recently picked up on playing the pocket soldier. I normally main medic but i got a little tired of that. I know the basics of pocketing but i feel like i could definitely use some help. basic tips would be helpful.

Know where your medic is at all time. Both of you share the responsibility of knowing where each other are.
Work with the demo as much as possible. 2 heavy classes secure almost every choke.
Know when to leave your medic to die and when not to. When you see 2 people bombing with a scout flanking and your meds in the red, it might be time to just jump away and go for picks.
On places like spire, call when to rotate onto point with the roamer. Situational.

Don't overextend, and don't get pocket soldier syndrome. You're seemingly doing the best because you have the most heals/ubers.

dont jump the scout who's lit as fuck just let him leave, he won't be fighting if he is lit as fuck

instead kill the stuff putting your med in danger

practice the game, watch good pockets, figure out how situations should be played out

experience is important, go scrim/pug/watch demos and try to learn from everything you do or watch

asking for advice is a great thing to do, but general advice is pretty difficult to get and you don't know what kind of answers you are going to get

after you get some experience you'll have better questions than just "how to pocket"

(sorry if im coming off dick-ish but im being sincere)

Take your time on your rockets, conserve ammo for pushing/holding.
Make sure you know whats going on on your flank. And always be aware of where the enemy combo is.
Practice positioning. One of the best things you can do for yourself and your medic is to be in a position to quickly push or back out if needed.
Call all initial dmg on pushes, that way when your scouts/roamer come in they know who to focus.
If you fail a push, dont beat yourself up about it. It can wait til after the scrim or match.
Call. A lot.

These are mainly things I have to work on myself

One thing that helped me a lot (as in, going from complete and utter garbage to just utter garbage) was someone saying that you need to "clear a zone" for your medic to move around in.

Positioning yourself and your medic is the most important thing you need to master. You must take into account your teams player numbers, their player numbers (is their demoman down?), your teams general health, and most importantly the uber situation, add all that up and position your combo accordingly.

I feel like after the season of Open the takeaway message was that I should be protecting my med. That is your job, and the other stuff you do usually matters a bit less.

I put a lot of burden on myself to top-frag and do a shitload of damage (which I didn't do, which in turn ruined my tf2 self-esteem and made it hard to improve), but that's not always your job as pocket, and it probably is better for your team if you play your function within the team rather than just trying to frag like I did all the time.

Try not to spam all your rockets blindly, next thing you know, a scout could jump out and rape you while you get a shotgun out

lesson 1 dont listen to botmode

most goood pocket soldiers tell their team what to do when and it works because they're very aware, stay aware and know when you should jump away and not jump, in my opinion its the dumbest thing to not bomb when its a good opportunity. good opportunities include trapping the other team so your team can kill them etc.

"in my opinion" stopped after that

ya switch w/ roamer for spire cap if roamer needs heals, or some other similar situation. don't just up and leave your medic like saltysally is promoting.
