120+hz through HDMI

I've been arguing with my Russian roommate for 2 hours on whether you can run true 120hz through HMDI (whether 1.4a or 1.4b). I was trying to ELI5 how TVs arent "true" 120hz and how the bandwidth of the cables compare (DVI-D,VGA, HMDI, Displayport) but I dont know enough as to how or why exactly this is so. Had a few questions:
- Difference between 120hz TVs and Monitors
- Why there are differences in various resolutions and refresh rates supported by cables
- Why HDMI or other cords can't do 120hz at lower resolutions

I'm pretty sure the cables are all electrically identical, the only thing that impacts it is the hardware on either side.

this is true for the past couple revisions of hdmi

you can get 120hz through hdmi

there are differences in resolutions supported for the same reason that vga can only do 120hz+ at certain resolutions, it's just hitting a limit in bandwidth - e.g. 1080p @ 120hz takes more bandwidth than 720p @ 120hz and older revisions of hdmi only have enough bandwidth to support the latter

120hz computer monitors are an actual 120hz refresh rate display panel, 120hz tvs are usually a 60hz display panel with the light behind it blinking at 120hz which makes things look smoother but isn't actually 120hz for obvious reasons

-120Hz monitors accept 120Hz input and display it.
120/240Hz TVs only accept 60Hz max input then apply interpolation or just use black frame insertion. It should look better than the original 30/60Hz content but it isn't true 120/240Hz. They won't accept 120Hz input either so 120Hz on a 120Hz monitor is far better.

-For your intents and purposes HDMI/DP/VGA cables all behave the same. DVI obviously got Single and Dual Link but that's it.

-They can. If your monitor supports it (your GPU should definitely support >120Hz).

Sort of correct. There's HDMI with ethernet, which probably won't matter to you, and the difference between Category 1 and 2 ("High Speed HDMI Cable"), that is not so much about the electrical properties but whether or not the cable has been tested for cat 2. Also those are mostly relevant for 5m/15ft to 15m/50ft lengths, below that (so pretty much any monitor setup) literally any cable should work without any problems.

The cheapest >=120Hz HDMI 1.4 monitor would be the BenQ XL2430T.
Cheapest and so far only >=120Hz HDMI 2.0 that I know of is the Asus MG278Q.
