Now that the playoff seeds have been finalized, I figured to make a little write-up with predictions about the Open bracket. In my opinion, this Open Post-Season is one of the most evenly balanced between the top of the division. Even the “middle of the pack” teams have been strong and many have shown they can hang with the top teams. I see several matches in this first round that have the potential to go 3 maps and be major upset wins.

The second round of playoffs should have some insane match-ups and I will try and update this post after the first round is complete.

Vs.
#16 open winners

Ed Head have easily become the front runners to win Open this season. Since Gullwash week, they have utterly destroyed other High Open teams they have faced giving up only 1 round in the process. I have been told they have been playing their “mains” in recent matches so that only makes them scarier to face as they could likely contend with most IM teams.

Open winners qualified for playoffs by losing their final match 4-3. ESEA rule changes apparently qualified them based off Rounds Won and even that was by the smallest of margins.

I can’t see anything but a complete roll for Ed Head, even if they off-class.

Weiner Bros started the season as mostly everyone’s pick to win the division. They have the experience and talent to beat any team in Open and for the first half of the season they were dominant. Recently they seem to be slipping a little bit as the matches get more difficult but I expect them to refocus for the playoff push and the first match should not be much of a problem.

Koala Washing Machines made playoffs with 10 wins. 50% of those were FFW’s and there is not really a single match worth talking about this season.

I believe Koala Washing Machines stand a good chance of winning against Weiner Bros if they get another FFW

#14 WaddleSquad

Puck Fat is a really good team, I had several scrims against them and they have been quite solid. That said there is some concern looking at the match performances. Puck Fat has mostly avoided playing the top teams in the division except for 2 losses against Ed Head and Weiner Bros early in the season. These early losses forced ESEA scheduling to give Puck Fat an easier schedule as the season progressed. This match against WaddleSquad could be more interesting than the seeding numbers indicate.

WaddleSquad likely had the toughest schedule for the beginning 8 matches of the season and finished 4-4. The middle/late matches of the season allowed them to stomp the other mid-open competition and made a good playoff push at the end.

I know WaddleSquad have been scrimming hard these past weeks and could make quite a good BO3 against Puck Fat but they really need to close the DM difference. Fast

Mutual Consent has had an incredibly strong season. They are the only team who has defeated all the top 5 teams they have faced including 2 major wins on Viaduct in the final week where ScrewB was simply insane in both matches. Of more interest to me are both losses this season. A 5-4 loss to Blue Elephant is plausible enough but a 5-0 loss to 2 in Flank 4 in Stank is way more puzzling. No offense to 2F4S but there has to be some story attached to this loss that explains how Mutual Consent got rolled on a map like Badlands?

Spider2 Y Banana has been destroying mid-open teams since starting the season with a 2-4 record. Coming into the final week they needed at least 1 win to secure a playoff spot against teams that I frankly thought they were going to lose to. They proved me wrong twice with 2 solid victories and knocked yack me off out of the playoffs in the process. There is no doubt this team has gotten much stronger as the season has progressed because of a few key pickups from other dead teams but recent team drama is likely going to stop all progression for the time being.

Unfortunately for S2YB, I don’t think this first round matchup is going to end well.

EPS was leading the Open Division rankings for mostly the entire season until the last 2 weeks. Tough losses to the top teams in the division pushed them down to the 5th seed and in an unfavorable position in the bracket. I believe EPS has the toughest road of all playoff teams as they try to reach the finals. Even predicting this first round match is dealing with the unknown because EPS has had some strange match results that indicate good and bad tendencies. On the good side is the ability to hold and win tight matches. Several wins have been by just 1 round and that proves their resolve under pressure. On the bad side is the lack of consistency against teams they should defeat more convincingly. Having an “off-night” in the playoffs during a BO3 will result in watching from the sidelines.

john wayne are more of a mystery to me now than they were when the season began. They finished with 11 wins total but 6 were FFW’s. Their best game of the season, and likely the best game played in all of Open so far, was a 4-3 loss to none other than EPS. (If you want to Download and watch a good process match, look no further)

I have to predict for EPS here because they should be the stronger team, but don’t be surprised if this match goes to a third map.

Doing a write-up on my own team (BLANC Esports) is a little strange but I like to be honest and not bullshit around. I have greatly enjoyed this season with my teammates. Our overall experience level as a team is pretty low but we have learned to play together and improve. I feel that we have not yet played up to potential against the top of the division. We have always taken at least 1 round in matches and some scores to not reflect how close it was in reality but falling short is falling short. I can say this with certainty, if we play to potential, we can defeat any team in the division and playoffs are the proving ground.

god is real dude is a team I honestly don’t know much about aside from looking at the match results. I do not know who the starting 6 players will be but looking at the roster, I do know yeremy and saint to be very solid players that can carry a team. Wins against Pwr Rangers and John Wayne highlight the season to this point but against the top of the division they have struggled.

GL in the match.

5-2 – Granary – BLANC Esports

Blue Elephant started the season with an impressive 9-0 record. 4 of those wins were against playoff level opponents including their best win of the season over Mutual Consent 5-4. Clearly this team is good enough to hang with the top of the division but may have issues in close matches. 4-3 loss to EPS and a 5-4 loss to BLANC were missed chances to really climb the ladder. Playoff matches tend to show a team’s true colors because BO3’s can be grueling affairs that come down to the final captures.

Smug drugglers started the season 1-4 and just making playoffs after that poor start is impressive in itself. Since then they have mostly destroyed their opponents and got key wins over Spider2 Y Banana and John Wayne. This team has been improving all season and has been scrimming hard for playoffs.

I think this is the key first round matchup to watch. Either team can win, it just depends on who shows up on match night.

5-4 – Badlands – smug drugglers
5-2 – Granary – Blue Elephant
4-1 – Metalworks – Blue Elephant

2F4S had one of the easiest schedules for the first half of the season and ran off 8 wins. The second half of the season is where they proved their worth despite going 3-5 against the harder teams. Wins over Blue Elephant and an unexplained 5-0 roll of powerhouse Mutual Consent highlight the season thus far. Looking at the losses shows some very competitive matches against teams at the top of the division.

Pwr Rangers is a strong team that has the potential to surprise in this match. They proved during the season that they can be competitive against other playoff teams but finished the season with 3 FFW’s. That alone means they have only played 1 match in a month and there could be serious rust unless they have been scrimming really hard.

I believe this match will go down to the third map and has the potential to be a nail-biter.

Rain is officially scouting for us in kairu's place, and kairu has taken up the mantle of playing pocket. Obviously, he's still our best player, and I definitely think any team drama we accrued recently is negated by rain and kairu's moves—neither seem to skip a beat and we're probably as good as we were before the drama, perhaps even better so long as rain stops throwing and randomly running spy when we don't need one

My Grandfather smoked his whole life. I was about 7 years old when my mother said to him, 'If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you have to stop.'. Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized what exactly was at stake. He gave it up immediately. Three years later he died of lung cancer. It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me, 'Don't ever smoke. Please don't put your family through what your Grandfather put us through.' I agreed. At 24, I have never touched a cigarette. I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it, because watching gargleburry in open playoffs gave me cancer anyway.
