https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwXPdfmBK3k

A while ago I created this thread to gather potentially interested prem/invite players to work with me on a new learning/tutorial series like the old mge videos.

After a long time in the making I've finally finished our first video, this took like 20-30 hours in production and it was the first time I've done something of this kind so I would appreciate any feedback you might have.

This is something I've always wanted to do with the channel and the wiki and I'm very happy I finally finished the first video. Huge thanks to xalox for helping out, being so professional and helpful, and making this first video possible. I also hope to get people to contribute to our wiki through these videos as well, so what a better way to start than to contribute to xalox's page?

All the other prem/invite players that added me back then, I haven't heard back from anyone else, so if you're still interested in working with me on a next video make sure to hit me up on steam.

Oh man great work Kaneco! Really looking forward to see more of these.
btw is it just me or is xalox's mic too quiet?

TF2 strategy vids less than 4:00 definitely have a lot of potential and are easily watchable.

As a tip, xalox's mike was definitely too quiet, and i felt xalox was at some point telling the same stuff several times in a row (maybe thats me, i'll watch again later). So keep on doing these, and make sure to have a clear plan/points to say in order, and you will be able to make videos even shorter with the same level of insight.

yeah in line with what twiggy is saying, the mix on the mic is pretty weird, especially during the intro where there is a lot of noise in the background. production quality in general seems top notch though, definitely looking forward to more of these

I think a short frag clip of the player featured near the beginning would be pretty cool.

Thanks! Sorry about that, the recording was a bit low in general but trying to boost it distorted the sound a bit and also boosted the white noise quite a bit so I opted to keep it as high as I could without distorting it too much, I also didn't wanna bother xalox to record it again.

I have a little google doc with some guidelines/pointers and also some recording tips for those working with me so that should be enough, the rest I am leaving it up to the players regarding the presentation and direction they wanna take the video. I think it's not perfect but it got the point accross perfectly and considering it was xalox first recording of this kind, I think the presentation is quite decent.

All the feedback has been noted tho and I will definitely be more on top of the sound mix for next video. Although that doesn't depend solely on me but also they player mic's and recording conditions.

That's quite a cool idea actually but it would take wayyy too much work and time for me. This video alone took like 30 hours, granted now I have the template I can reuse so it's gonna be faster next times but it's still not worth it for me at the moment. Since I'm working part-time and studying atm. I will probably be creating a patreon campaign for the channel soon so if that is successful I will definitely think about putting a bit more time and adding a little frag introduction.

Sorry about the sound quality, I haven't really done anything like this before and my $10 microphone doesn't quite cut it. If you guys like this one, Ill try and do a few more with a little more depth.

Oh, boy. I used to love the old pro-tips series but they always stopped after the first 1-3 episodes. One thing, though. I think it'd better to use footage from an actual game with pauses/slow-mos where the player goes over what he's doing, why he's doing it, etc. when he's doing it. Imo it'd make the video more lively and you could actually see the tips being used in real time.

As I said I am leaving that totally up to the players, These are the guidelines I mentioned earlier, that is all I ask from the players. Xalox preferred to go this way and into this specific mid overview which is fine, there's still a lot more to cover about many more topics and Im happy to work on it (as long as I have time), and Im sure xalox would be up to do a few more on other topics as this one (apart from the already mentioned sound issues) has received pretty good feedback so far.

This is really great. I remember there was the idea being thrown around to add informative clips/mini-tutorials to casts in place of some of the SFM animations; have you considered using these pro-tips for that purpose?

Thanks! No one contacted me with that intention but I would be up for it (depending on the conditions of course)

I made a post about this kinda thing not too long ago, and I'm really happy you're making them. My suggestion in the other thread was for some really short tutorials (probably < 2 minutes). These would be really cool to show on stream during breaks or between games or something. Here were a few ideas that might work in a short format:

-Rollouts (don't need to go super in depth, just show sticky placement if it's demo, and just show the rollout for soldier, and maybe show it twice, from different angles or something)

-Rollouts other than the ones to mid. Some people don't realize there are super efficient jumps to take you from a forward spawn to wherever the fight is. For example, some scouts might not know how quickly you can get onto the other team's battlements from badlands forward spawn (mid->balconey->diagonal->dropdown).

-Tutorial on how to double-bomb soldiers at mid (maybe just show a few frag clips of this working, and have a voice-over of someone explaining why it can be effective, and how your soldiers need to comm that they are doing it, whether it's saying "I'm jumping in 3", or "we bomb when the clock hits :45", etc)

-Explain how crit heals work (such an important thing, and so easy for a newbie to be unaware of)

-Show some quick scenarios where an offclass can be particularly effective (i.e. pyro holding badlands or gully last, or heavy on granary last)

-Building uber (talk about how uber builds faster at certain health, and how the different uber guns charge at different speeds compared to eachother, and compared to building vs. not building)

Those are all the ones I can think of at the moment. I just think it'd be really useful for people who are just getting in to comp. I'm sure there are a lot that watch a stream for the first time and have no idea what's going on, or how/why somebody is doing something, and these could be really quick clips we throw into our comp streams that could help a lot with some of the little things.

I'm working part-time + uni now so I got very little time but I don't intend to let it die that soon, altough I will prob cutback on the production rate, it depends on the patreon which Im gonna create soonish. But it depends on the players as well, like 15 people added me at the time but only xalox went through with it, although 2 other players have confirmed they will be finishing their recordings soon.

i like the idea of this series but i think the execution of it could have been better.

rather than forcing viewers to visualize the concepts on an empty map, you should use example footage that illustrates the concepts that you're trying to introduce to the viewer. in addition, you should cut the audio together to speed up the conversation.

i feel like you may have modeled this series after LoLClass, but if you haven't already seen it, check it out. here's an example video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW4SrK2QiOc

i understand that it's only your first video and the first video usually takes the longest due to creating the intro, etc. but if you were to do a second video in the exact same format as the first, it shouldn't take you 20-30 hours considering you just used demo footage + unedited audio. the main issue will be getting players to help you out, but if you can just get them to talk for 10-15 minutes then clip the footage together with example footage, i think you can create a much better product. i'm looking forward to future videos!
