Whenever I'm home and talking to people in mumble, my dad walks by and asks if I'm talking to myself. Each time I have to explain that no I'm not, and no it's not a constantly open mic (I use push to talk), so no they can't hear this conversation because I don't want them to hear this conversation that we've had 30 times.

Video gaming has always been an activity that none of my family approves of so they'll find indirect ways to sabotage the experience. Their favorite tactic is to install a massive program that takes hours to complete so my ping skyrockets up to 400~500.

Whenever I'm in mumble around my dad he tells me "stop talking to pedophiles on the internet"

Also no matter how many times I explain to my mom that I need to hold a key for my voice to be transmitted, she always whispers when she needs to tell me something while I'm playing

Any time I am watching TV on one monitor and surfing/jumping on the other and somebody in my family walks by they always ask how I'm focusing on both at once

Ha! Try being allowed to play the game 10 hours during Christmas break, 30 hours over a 2-week period during summer break, and the game has to be uninstalled the rest of the year. God the memories. First few years of high school were not fun.

When I was in high school my stepdad wanted to be the cool guy and he and my brother and I would play starcraft on Saturday afternoons and the winner got to decide what we had for dinner on Sunday night and my brother won like 3 weeks in a row with some cookie cutter 9pool bullshit and we had to have hot dogs and frozen peas every week

But none of them ever played tf2. I guess my brother did briefly but he didn't like it.

My mother's reaction to seeing some clips of me playing were "You kill people? And they kill you?...and you're okay with that?!?". I think before she watched the clips she thought I was playing some type of online version of baseball or something.

She has come to understand what a scrim is (always surprises me how uncommon that word is offline) and when she asks me about my plans for a particular night she'll ask if I have a scrim or match. The best part of it is she'll say it with the tone of somebody who is borrowing a term from a language they don't know and hoping that they got it right.

However, I'm 90% sure that if I ask her to tell me the name of the game I play she won't know it. She refers to it as "your online game", and if I say "Team Fortress 2" or "TF2" she'll usually ask me what that is.

Then again, I can't really be certain what she's picked up. She occasionally gets really interested and will ask me in detail about it all, especially in regard to friends and teammates (she doesn't care for aliases, though, so I have to use everyone's real names, which can be tricky). Sometimes, though, she'll make a correlation that I never expected her to make, most notably when I told her about how much money TOTH had raised last year, and her response was "wait, is that real money...or in hats?". I was both a proud daughter and an embarrassed player that day, since apparently I've been contributing to the TF2 = hats misconception without even realizing it.

Edit: I asked her today what the name of the game I played is. Her: "That game that you play all the time?" Me: "Yeah, do you know its actual name?" Her (with a look of confusion on her face) "Team Fortress 2". Me: "Oh wow, I wasn't sure if you knew it. We were talking about parents and TF2 and I didn't think you knew its name." Her (with a look of incredulity on her face): "I'm not dumb and I do pay attention when we talk." Touché, Mum. And thank you for listening to my silly hobby.

Raytekthis is why none of my friends/family know of my secret identity as a professional tf2 athlete

Yeah its funny to see everyone saying "My family in friends joke with me about my TF2"

1. I hardly ever admit to people I play video games, let alone offer up scrims as an excuse to not do something
2. I was just in a job interview for a tech consultant position at school and the employer asked what games I play (I told her I built a gaming PC) I hesitated for a second and just said DOTA because it seemed like the most normal response

I envy all you guys with parents thinking tf2 is too violent. I used to get told to 'stop playing that violent game'... and it was minecraft.

Being totally honest, I told my current boss exactly what I did in my free time because he asked me that direct question. I straight up said, I play games online competitively. Followed up shortly after explaining how the video games I am talking about are not like "Pac-Man" or other mindless games you play against a computer.

I laid out for him how I started 20 years ago and been a team leader for as long as I can remember with great success. Organization, scheduling, team building, etc. To be honest, he ate it up completely and I have an awesome job.

You never know who you will encounter in life or what they may have knowledge about. Just be confident in yourself and many doors open.

the mumble me and my friends circlejerk in making fun of ckm's mother because he holds down push to talk AT ALL TIMES

http://puu.sh/jFqDP/88aa022fc6.png

In my case my dad played a good amount of Battlefield 2142 competitively and my mum plays a lot of guild wars (She's like high level and I feel like when we talk about each others games to one another we look like/feel absolute retards). Me and dad used to chat about the higher end teams and he would talk about playing against Team Immunity, Frenetic Array and Sequential Gaming 'back in the day'.

Kinda off topic but here I go:

When I was building a PC about 2 months ago, My dad was helping me do it, then He was talking to his boss about me getting a rig. his boss told him that there a shop selling "gaming pcs" for 300 bucks and " it was better then the ones in internet cafes".

Classic Felix.

And it's not even him using voice activation. It's literally him holding down his voice key while talking to his family.
