I'm sorry if this is some sort of duplicate post, but I need your help.

I pretty much main Scout now and play lobbies often. I do decent (but it's always 50/50 if you have a good team or not) and get compliments for the frags I do, but to be honest I have no idea of what to do besides harassing the medic and destroying the teleporter (I'm talking about HL role in general). I also think I often overextend myself and don't know when to fall back or stay back in general.

Do you guys have any tips, really any tips? I have no plan at all and still do decent ._.
I want to start out in Comp asap, but only with the knowledge...

You can look for Scout HL povs on Youtube but I'm not sure if there's a surplus of them on there...you could also try getting a mentor by looking on the UGC forms or posting there...usually there's alot of 6's scouts looking for insight but..

you should post this sort of thing to q/a help

Get healed. Scouts are amazing with 185 in Highlander because they soft counter everything in the HL combo - they mow down Heavies, 2shot Pyros without worrying about airblast, and can chase down Demos and Medics with ease. Scouts are more efficient to heal than anything else because they have less base health, so they lose overheal slower (they lose 4 hp/sec while Soldiers lose 6.67 hp/sec. Heavies 10 hp/sec, etc). They're also really good at cleaning up because of hitscan, reload faster, can chase frags because of speed, and keep their heals because of dodging. Scouts are really good at getting healed, just make sure that, if you're holding, 2 other people are watching the flank while you run to get buffed. In fights you can play pretty close to your Medic. If you have big Uber advantage, ask for Uber, because you're the best class to clean up on Demo damage and chase down their combo. In even Ubers you should just stay on the flank until Ubers fade at least.

Take 2v1s. Do not take 1v1s unless its a garbage class like Demo Medic Sniper Spy Wrench-Engie, or you have some sort of advantage like a buff, high ground, or a health kit. But even then 2v1s are best.

Cap stuff. Low level Scouts chase frags too often. Capping is your job unless you are already on top of the Medic.

Kill the Sniper. The Sniper is the best class in HL. You're not actually the best class at killing him, but if you can, you probably should, unless the Medic has advantage or Uber, then shoot him.

on movement:

-USE THE ATOMIZER. It's ridiculously strong and there's literally no reason not to use it unless you really like sandman. You don't really need Basher because there's so many people to heal that building is usually mostly unnecessary. The one exception is if your team is doing a 7-man sacrifice on a map like Viaduct, when you have huge uber disadvantage. But I prefer Detonator / Backscratcher Pyro building because Scout is much better at killing stuff.
-actively try and dodge stuff, don't just try and move so they don't hit you, if you see a projectile try your best to get the fuck out of the way
-related to the above, actually play soldier/demo/pyro vs scout mge (or soap dm) and figure out what is easy/hard to hit, then abuse that as a scout player.
-get a null-movement canceling script so you can spam wasd better
-you can airstrafe even with single/double jumps, abuse this to not get directed
-don't spam your double jump if you get airblasted, pyro airblast blocks airstrafing for 1 second so you will go straight up, which is what they expect
-don't chase gunslinger engineers around corners if you don't know where their mini is, because it's probably around the corner
-pretty much never try to be cute in scout v scout, just shoot them
-try and save your last jump to dodge stuff, you can spam single / double with atomizer because as long as you have your double jump, you're unpredictable
-mix in standing still occasionally against projectiles when you're at longer range and hitscan in general. nobody expects standing still.
-mix in jumping back and forth instead of left and right, nobody expects that
-abuse props. also pretend to jump on props and then don't, because people won't expect that
-jump over peoples heads, also pretend to do that and then don't do it, because people expect that
-if you're at low health against a class with hitscan in a 1v1, hug them. you can 2shot pretty much anything at point blank and it's hard to hit scouts.
-conversely, if you have health advantage in a 1v1, keep your distance. they can't do much damage to you with hitscan, you can dodge projectiles easily, and chip them to death
-don't run towards health packs all the time, it's really predictable
-you can dodge a rocket/sticky by falling off of high ground, don't always double jump back up because that's predictable
-surfing damage is amazing. keep in mind double jumping resets your momentum, so don't mash it because you'll jump straight up and its really easy to shoot the ground where you land. keep it in reserve for dodging airshots and preventing fall damage. also airstrafe
-vs soldiers/demos, what you can try to do is focus 100% on dodging until they waste all of their ammo, and then kill them. count rockets (listen for the firing sound), roamers especially are free kills if they have no rockets, same with demos if they single det all of their stuff
-at the start of mids demos may prefire you, this is predictable so don't get hit by it
-look for dumb collisions to stand on with r_drawclipbrushes 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWOkYY6uMoI)
-if you see the enemy scout has like 20 inch/360 (and you don't) you can circle strafe them

Spycheck. You're very good at it, and one of the things that low level players do is leave 100% of spychecking to the Pyro, which is silly.

The above post covers pretty much everything important, only thing that I would add, specific to overextending, is that in a lot of situations it is way better for you to be alive than for you to take a risk running in to get a pick. Unless it is an important part of the combo or the sniper there are few picks that are vital to a push, and having the scout alive during a push (or, more importantly, immediately after a push) is hugely important in HL.

Sort of in the same vein is playing with your soldier. Playing off of each others damage, and working to eliminate each others hard counters, is very important for establishing flank control. If there is something that you are having difficulty dealing with (mini's and things of that nature) communicate what and where to your soldier. And listen for them to be doing the same thing. Finally, baiting corners for each other can be a powerful tool (be careful of the other team doing similar things).

Finally, if you are dead, or simply can't watch the flank, be sure to communicate that to your combo. In a lot of situations they are relying on you to prevent the enemy flank from getting in behind unseen. You do not need to fight/kill these flanking players if you are unable to or out of position, but you do need to let your combo know to expect threats from behind as well.

Disclaimer, I do not main scout... so the above may not be viable or important in all situations, but as a medic those are things that can help the combo quite a bit in HL.

this is also really good advice for 6s. way too many scouts end up with 5% of the heals and ~30ish deaths because they do not get themselves buffed and pick stupid 1v1s.
