TurinDotA technically was around for 3 years longer than tf2 but it wasn't really an esport for the first few years, it was mostly just a mod that some people ran.

This is true. So let's say the DotA comp scene started around 2005. It still had a good 6 year run before Dota 2 hit beta, and 8 years until Dota 2 was released. So I'd say it's been around a little longer than TF2 but not by much, and it's dead now.

yttriumRight now, I want you to go down the list of ESEA weapon bans, and share with me one weapon you think should be unbanned. I will give you a legitimately good reason for keeping that weapon banned.

Here's a friendly list if you're lazy.

Now, if you were trying to argue against ETF2L, maybe I could even slightly see an argument worth having. But ESEA?

If you can give me a legitimate reason for spycicle to be banned then I'll acknowledge what you're saying. There is no way that weapon should be allowed when comms exist.

TohsakaRinI apologize for hyperbolizing but your nitpicking doesn't change any of my points. The game isn't that big at all and you'd have to be delusional to think otherwise.

most of ur points are invalid since they make sweeping generalizations of the community. you characterize the comp community as one entity that alienates newbies, brags about mge, hates unlocks, and is dead. that isn't even to mention the fact that you throw around insults in your post, which isn't the best way to get us to acknowledge ur post.

badinkajinkyou characterize the comp community as one entity that alienates newbies

It obviously isn't intentional, but the way the system is set up right now, newbies aren't really going to gravitate toward the community since joining it takes away a lot of the game that they love.

badinkajinkbrags about mge

I should have clarified but I didn't say that in all seriousness. I do think that generally people put to much emphasis on dming though.

badinkajinkhates unlocks

Generally they are hated though, am I wrong?

badinkajinkand is dead

It certainly isn't growing, I'll say that. The scene needs way more valve support if it wants to actually grow.

Valve never intended tf2 as an esport and will never support it. It's a far cry that they would give us MM or any sponsorship whatsoever. The game also has consistently been growing (there are graphs and shit to back this up), so you're wrong there.

Also, you're pretty new, so this "emphasis" on dm that you see might simply be because you don't have much of an understanding of the meta in comp tf2.

If you're not going to gravitate, then you're not really our target audience. We could work on better advertising of comp tf2, but if you don't like it, then no one really cares.

tf2 was made as a casual game and will always be a casual game, the fact that such a casual game has such a big competitive community behind it is actually pretty impressive, especially compared to cs1.6 and broodwar, which were both inherently competitive just by the way they were designed.
its truly a tragedy, this is exactly why the competitive scene isnt as big as it could be, not because of valve support, but because the majority of the players that play tf2 just pub/mvm with friends and have no interest in competitive games or they satisfy that interest elsewhere.

TohsakaRinIf you can give me a legitimate reason for spycicle to be banned then I'll acknowledge what you're saying. There is no way that weapon should be allowed when comms exist.

Spycicle is literally useless in 6s, even if it was allowed its use would be nearing 0% since virtually no team runs a full time pyro. That and spy is a situational class whose aim is to get clutch picks through backstabs mainly, if you're getting caught with a spycicle by a pyro you become literally useless.

There are 3 possible reasons why weapons might be banned in competitive leagues:
#1: They have completely flawed mechanics, interactions or gamebreaking bugs that have no place in a competitive setting. (ie: pomsom)
#2: They have overpowered attributes, thus giving an unfair advantage in a competitive setting. (ie: GRU in 6s)
#3: They are completely irrelevant or useless in a specific competitive setting, thus banned to keep things as simple and straightforward as possible (ie: spycicle in 6s)

The only reason you can argue is #3, there are quite a few weapons that fit that criteria I reckon, but even then, if you are willing to discuss that reasoning then you are clearly not invested in competitive tf2 because weapons banned in that situation aren't preventing you from improving as a player or enjoying the game in a competitive setting.

And there you have it, the comp community in a nutshell. If this is the mindset everyone here is riding then it's no surprise that the community is as small as it is. You're basically saying that you're fine that the comp scene is a secret club. If you're saying that its okay for valve to not support the scene because they never intended for one to form then you've already given up. You don't love this game, stop pretending that you do. Your elitism is blinding your rational thoughts. If smash bros can do it then why can't you?

You're being pretty nitpicky. I mean, sure, it doesn't necessarily deserve to be banned to the same extent as Bonk! does, but it's a straight upgrade to the vanilla knife and there is absolutely no reason to make an already stupid utility class even stupider without any negative side effects.

If you only play hide and seek in CS, you're not comp CS's target audience.

If you play TDM only in Quake, you're not comp Quake's target audience.

If you aren't interested in comp tf2, then why should we try to get people that don't care to care? It simply won't happen.
It's not "elitism", it's simply knowing whats reasonable. 7 1/2 years down the line, there's no way that tf2 can be the size of CS or LoL.

So once I was walking home from the doctor's, and as I walk, I see this black couple fucking each other. This wasn't some under the blanket type shit. This guy was banging his girl over the hood of his car in front of the fucking park I was passing through. Shit was wild. We made eye to eye contact for a solid minute too.
