ViperStrikerOkay so I went ahead and put together this semi-budget build. My intent was to only spend more than $100 on the CPU and GPU, which I did. Made sure it wall works together, PC Part Picker's only concern is if the 770 will fit in my HAF 912, but I think it should be fine.

You can do a LOT better than that for $800, a rig with that CPU is going to choke even in TF2

Don't get me wrong but ... you don't actually know what you're doing, do you?

What's your budget?
What are you going to use it for?
Do you really need 2TB?

Assuming it's for TF2 and maybe some other games:

When it comes to making sure parts are compatible, I'm fine. As for what I put together, yes the CPU is lackluster, and the motherboard is a bit as well, but considering what I have now (AMD Athlon X2 220, 4 GB RAM, Galaxy GeForce GT520, 500GB HDD) it's a major upgrade.

I'm really not sure what you're trying to say.

It's near impossible to even get a slower CPU or GPU than what you currently have.

If you know the parts are bad why did you choose them?

Budget and intended usage help me a lot more than that kind of build. These are the only things I can't figure out for you. If you want proper advice you have to tell me what you want/need. A half-hearted part list attempt doesn't really tell me anything.

You don't have to defend your build.

Is any game/application not running well enough? If not then you don't need to upgrade.

I mean just looking at the CPU I have no idea how much power you need. Anything from a 105-115$ upgrade with an 860K + 212 Evo/ETS-T40-TB to a 310$ E3-1231 v3 + mobo combo is within the budget.

Overclocking yes/no?
TF2 yes/no?
Other games yes/no? If yes, which games exactly? Target fps/quality?
Streaming yes/no?
Need more SSD/HDD space?

RAM and PSU are definitely fine, GPU depends a bit on the games, definitely fine for TF2 and not going to hold you back in any other games without a major CPU upgrade.
SSD and HDD are fine unless you need more space.
Mobo is fine unless you want to upgrade to a CPU that needs a different chipset or even a different socket.
Replacing the APU with a CPU would be the obvious choice for me, but it really depends on what you need.

It was made for TF2/CSGO but recently ive been trying to play some newer games like Advanced Warfare/BF4 and have been getting around 50 fps on lowest settings so its a bit rough. Dont need more SSD/HDD space, not planning on streaming and im not planning on OCing any time soon.

Also im planning on getting a 120hz monitor soon but i dont really have a constant over 120 fps on CSGO/TF2 so thats why im looking to upgrade some parts at the moment.

50fps on lowest settings in BF4? There is definitely something wrong. Are you using the 270X and not the integrated GPU?

>120fps with what config in CS:GO/TF2?

EDIT: What I mean is that 50fps on low settings sound just like the 5600K whereas 5600K + 270X should get you almost 50fps on ultra.

really want to upgrade from where im at but at an extreme budget
i have 700-750 dollar budget, i cannot exceed 750, i need to keep it as close to 700 as possible
i really want to use the i5-4660 @ 3.2 ghz and the nvidia 750 ti
dont care what else the other parts are, just really want something possible within the budget left with these two parts, although i dont mind the cheaper equivelants to these parts as anything is still an upgrade from what ive got
if someone new of a decent prebuild computer in this price range that they could reccomend that would be pretty awesome too as im not good at this building pc thing.

ive been looking at the intel b85 from ibp @ 649 but i need to buy windows for 100, so, not so sure about it

also really into post 359

also this is like a retarded question that i should probably just google but what do i need for a desktop to pick up wifi, assuming its some sort of part :P

Yeah using the 270x.

Using Max frames on tf2 and got everything on low in cs besides global shadow quality set to high and 2x MMSA. usually getting about 90-150 fps in both games.

My setup right now is:

i7-2600k @ 3.7 GHz
4x2 DDR3 @ 668 MHz (9-9-9-24)
GTX570

Lately my computer has been running pretty hot (75+ C). If my goal is to run CSGO above 280 frames (just got 144 Hz monitor, TF2 seems to be mostly okay) is there anything I should be upgrading or can I accomplish this by getting a cooler and overclocking? I'm already getting ~180 but with a lot of drops and a decent bit of stuttering.

Why the i5-4460 and 750 Ti? You can definitely get better parts with that budget.

I don't really know any good pre-builts, there's enough options to get it built if you think that you absolutely can't build it yourself or just don't have the time. Watch a good build video (e.g. LinusTechTips) and keep it open while building and you really shouldn't run into any problems. Even if you do, just ask someone instead of forcing anything and it's virtually impossible to break anything.

I looked the build in #359 up again and got a heart attack because apparently it's the spawn of satan, it's at 666.66$ right now.
I fixed that and added Windows.

There are some motherboards with wifi, usually you'd get a wifi card or stick though. I don't what standard your router is using (802.11 a, b, g, n or ac) so I can't really recommend anything. You should be able to get a decent one for <20$. It's also not ideal for online games, if there's any way you could run a cable do so. There's also Powerline Ethernet.

The only thing I'm not skeptical about is the ODD.

Brief list of what went through my head:
4790K, nice.
All-in-one liquid cooler, WHYYYYYYYYY?!
WTF?!
It's Corsair so it's probably not for rendering, don't need 16GB then.
What? Why?
What the fuck is that HDD?
A 760? Really? With that budget? Oh wait, he didn't even specify a budget.
Oh come on.
Dat overkill. Does he want to go SLI? At least it's a very good PSU.
Decent ODD.
FUCKING 760 SLI I KNEW IT!

Tell me what you want to do with that build.
What is your budget?
Here's a better one for 200$ less, I can adjust it to make it cheaper or put even more POWER in there.

You can add me if you want to, it's faster and easier for me that way.

I'm assuming that's the CPU temperature. If so a cooler should help. Are you using the stock cooler? You also need to check what maximum CPU cooler height your case allows. If you don't plan on doing anything crazy in terms of overclocking the Enermax ETS-T40-TB should be a good choice.

At what settings are you running CS:GO? I'm hoping it's your GPU bottlenecking because there's no way you'll get >50% more fps by overclocking your CPU. Getting a cooler is still a good idea, a slight overclock and lower temperatures are always a good thing.

Sorry guys, didn't have internet for a few days.

It's a bit strange then. at 75°C the CPU shouldn't be throttling but you never know.
Like I said before this thread isn't the place for troubleshooting.
Look up how to check for CPU throttling and other reasons for low fps in CS:GO and/or add me if you can't fix it.

Overclocking is still a good idea if your motherboard supports it.

How much more better would an i5 @3.1ghz run in TF2 compared to an i3 @3.5 ghz?

I'm looking at the prices right now and the i5 costs about $50 more than the i3, are the benefits of the quad core worth the extra cost? I'm a student and my overall build budget is around $650 including the operating system.

It's complicated.
i5 does have a lot more power, the problem is usually you'll be held back by the slowest thread. That means as long as the i3 can cope with the total load since it's cores are faster (3.5GHz vs 3.3GHz max turbo on the i5) the i5 might not actually beat it.

My recommendation depends on wether or not you'll play any other games and if you're willing to drop down the case and PSU a bit.
Just FYI while 620W is overkill you won't even get a 400W PSU of the same quality for 55$, that's insanely cheap for the M12II.

For TF2 only I'd say get this (you can use the case and PSU you selected, they're better, just more expensive):

If you want to play other games aswell you can up the GPU a bit. If you're not in a hurry wait for deals or until you can up your budget by 50$ or play TF2 with integrated graphics for while and then get a 270X or even a 280. Only worth it if you want/"need" 1080p+60fps+max quality in current games.

And we have a winner, that's a pretty good build.
There is no such thing as future proofing though. The most cost effective way is to buy exactly as much power and features as you need.
Also you didn't specify a budget.

There's not much you could do besides some cosmetic changes. Most of them are literally cosmetic.
RAM: Instead of 1600Mhz CL8 in blue you could get 1600Mhz CL9 (slightly slower) in blue (-2$) or red (-6$) or 1866MHz CL9 (slightly faster) in red (-5$) or 2133MHz CL10 (a bit faster again) in gold (+1$).

You could go microATX (-66.68$).
microATX complete blue colour scheme (minimal performance sacrifice) for 12$ less.
Taking that build and swapping the i5-4690K for a Xeon E3-1231 v3 costs 15.11$ more. Not overclocked the i5 is only 3% faster in single threaded applications and even overclocked it can't beat the Xeon in multi threaded. So in other words, single threaded the i5 beats it barely and is cheaper, overclocked it beats it convincingly but at a higher price. Multi-threaded the Xeon wins against non-OC by a wide margin while being only slightly more expensive and while the gap is smaller against OC it would still win and be cheaper.

The original GPU (+6.01$) and red colour scheme would add 12.92$ to the Xeon build.

Short summary:
Original: 846.50$
microATX: 779.82$
mATX blue: 767.82$ (slightly slower RAM and GPU)
Xeon mATX blue: 782.93$ (slightly slower RAM and GPU)
Xeon mATX red: 795.85$ (slightly slower RAM)

And now my personal favourite.
Only works if you're willing the go through flashing-the-BIOS-without-a-CPU process.
Same performance except for the RAM and it's the second cheapest build:

And we have a winner, that's a pretty good build.
There is no such thing as future proofing though. The most cost effective way is to buy exactly as much power and features as you need.
Also you didn't specify a budget.

Here are the builds I made for #385
Improved 860K
The G3258 is better though so i made one aswell.

After talking to him on steam I decided that a bit more CPU power wouldn't hurt since he wanted to get a 144Hz monitor and wasn't a problem in terms of the budget.

MR_SLINIn an effort to condense the number of PC build threads out there and to give people a place to view many TF2 players' PC builds at once, I'd like to suggest that people post in this stickied thread.

Feel free to post your personal build here (and edit your post as you upgrade) either by linking the parts individually or by linking something from a website like www.pcpartpicker.com. It helps if you post the approximate cost of your build as well.
