stabby-stabby leaving TF2

So apparently stabby is leaving TF2 for good, saying in response to a question that he believes comp TF2 is dying and doesn't have it in him any more to play. I know it'll get downfragged because "lul spymains" (because that attitude helps), but I thought it was at least noteworthy.

It's fairly big news because his videos really helped pull a lot of players in from pubs, this is kind of sad.

The old "I am leaving tf2 pls suck my dick and beg me to stay thread" a staple of the tf2 community.

Something which stands out for me is when he said that playing pub doesn't cut it anymore. I 100% agree, I used to love this game and could play pub TF2 for ages, now pub TF2 is just a shit storm with no real sense behind it. People running around with fucking taunts, meleeing all the time, fucking parachutes, pub is less about actually fucking killing people and more about doing some retarded shit on your own. It's very difficult to carry on playing this game when the standard public side just isn't enjoyable at all and the comp side just isn't active enough.

I poured my heart and soul into this season and don't have it in me to do that again. This was my dream team.'

I think it's cause he lost. Still I really enjoyed his videos when I was a spy main way back and he really was an asset to the game. Sad to see him go

It might be because he lost, but I'm certain it'd be easier to bounce back if we had an active comp scene with a bright future.

It is normal for people with alot of time in tf2 to feel like pubs are kinda retarded , since both Stabby and you have alot of competitive time in your tf2 career, but people shouldnt be sad about those kinda things , i understand their point but if someone great at tf2 stops playing it isnt bad because he isnt the only good spy in the world and the ones who arent as good as stabby will evolve and maybe even become better than him, after all no one started as a Plat Player. (No im not a stabby hater , i actually love stabby but if he wants to leave how can we stop him , he knows what he wants not us)

It's not because he lost. He said in a stream during a scrim (or a match, can't remember) that this was his last season, win or lose, and in a stream prior to the grand finals he said that he was quitting competitive tf2 because he's got too much shit going on in real life to continue playing. I didn't realize that he was dropping tf2 altogether though, so that's very sad to hear. I'll miss his stream very much, but at least he's giving his fanbase one last hoorah.

Anyway, like him or not, stabby was an incredibly important figure in our community, namely the highlander side of it. Even if all he spawned was steel spy mains, new players are new players, and lots of people learned about competitive tf2 thanks to his efforts to expose his viewerbase on youtube to it.

One thing that upsets and concerns me is the number of players who are latching on to this and Lange's thing as being "proof" that TF2 is dying or competitive is dying. I've had random people asking me if TF2 is dying, and that concerns me.

Certainly if it's the opinion of some that the game is dying, that's their opinion. But people are taking this as fact.

Yeah, he said on the lower-bracket finals pre-game that once Ginyu's out, he'd be finished with competitive, so it doesn't look like it's because Ginyu lost.

didn't he quit last season and the season before though? chances are he could end up playing again if not next season the season after.
as getawhale said it worrying that people are watching this lange video and seem to be deciding the game is dead when infact a couple of players leaving doesn't make the game dead

People had these thoughts way before Lange posted that video, difference is that like Lange, people more recognised in the community are venting their thoughts on popular platforms instead of just in a mumble with a few other people.

This doesn't mean that comp is actually dying, I think this means that people are starting to realise that if you put a lot of effort in to the game you aren't going to really see as much of a return as you used to.

My main point being.. yes perhaps many of our long-standing players are leaving. They are. They're getting sick of the game after 7 years, and understandably so. But there are thousands of potential players out there who may be able to come and be the new generation, the new top comp players. I'd hate to see newer players get discouraged because of constant declarations that "comp is dead". I think it's far from being that simple, and that's an unfair way to put it.

Anyone that came into this game searching for a return was going to leave anyways. There hasn't been a chance for a return since like 4 years ago. TF2 has always been played for the love of the game/community.

If people are just now realizing that you won't go pro in TF2, they must have tried really hard to ignore the facts.

stabby is a cool guy even though he wasn't too popular around these forums (at least people -frag bombed him whenever he tried to post)

i hope he is successful in whatever he's trying to work on irl

he was really fun to play with, enough to get me to play highlander for multiple seasons!!

the dude's kind of justified in stating his disdain for a bit of the tf2 community, considering how ppl take his existence as a spy main on here.

for all intents and purposes, his tech with stabs and using them effectively popularized spy as something more than providing intel and sitting back often in HL, and he was a fantastic example of bringing new players into competitive play by showing what he could do. hell, I'd say spy takes a good amount of technical skill high-level because of him, since a lot of his success in backstabs come from knowing how to do shit like strafestabs consistently, and having a chance to still pick someone off with his tech once he was caught.

it's a shame, I recall him saying he wanted to talk more overall strategy highlander on his channel over specific stabs after his last one. that would have done a lot to show people in, I'd think

What killed pubs wasn't really the silly unlocks and random shit. Was quickplay. ANd the restrictions valve set for quickplay. It killed 90% of the pub communities in tf2, and being part of a community was the most fun part of pubs.

We used to have 3-4 community servers always full in Portugal, with a lot of regulars. After quickplay came and specially after valve changed restrictions for quickplay you're lucky if you even see 1 of those full, it killed all the servers.

Nowadays u just press quickplay and end up in a luxembourg 2fort valve server with random people with 300 ping

Yeah, valve choked out quality communities and enabled the shitty pinion servers through their quickplay rules. They've tried to fix that recently, but it's far too late. I sucks, but that's just how it is :(

WARHURYEAHSomething which stands out for me is when he said that playing pub doesn't cut it anymore. It's very difficult to carry on playing this game when the standard public side just isn't enjoyable at all and the comp side just isn't active enough.

man this sums up exactly what i've been thinking

i miss community servers and i miss people actually playing the game, the last time i had fun pubbing was when i made my own server with a few blocked unlocks... which dropped from 24/24 to 0/24 2 weeks later when the quickplay update hit. fuck that update.

I don't know about "killed" all the communities. The one I'm an admin/regular on has had its daily numbers go down, we're still alive and kicking. Albeit, with dedicated seeders again. I didn't think that the drop in players was from quickplay though, it just seemed to me that more people were spending their freetime playing other games seeing as how TF2 is a pretty old game.

If it is from quickplay, then that sucks because it seems like the only place new players will be drawn to are Valve servers and people don't tend to form bonds there. Whereas, when I first started playing TF2, I frequented that pub because of the community and the friends I've made over the years. Valve taking that away from people is :(

Even if you think spy is a joke and that it relies on broken game mechanics (aka source) its not easy to understand and manipulate those mechanics as well as really good spies can.

Stabby has always been a level headed and kind guy. Sorry to see him go.

I don't think very highly of Reddit (at all) but there are thousands of players over there, or who knows how many. When stabby does an AMA (that gets 1200 upvotes in 10 hours) and one of the highest answers features him saying "Yes, TF2 is dead" that's a huge chunk of (very impressionable) people who will then just accept that as being true. That's where my problem lies. Say what you will about /r/tf2 but that's an enormous audience.
