Terraria, though you'd probably have to help the kid a little bit. Best if the kid is 8+ years old.

If looking for educational games, try math blaster, treasure mathstorm, or reader rabbit. (Those are all really old and might not work with current OS.)

If looking for general games: I have always loved 3d Ultra Lionel Traintown, if you can manage to acquire it. Rollercoaster Tycoon and minecraft/terraria are also good options. Portal's fun.

dyzyukiThe Longest Journey
Machinarium
To The Moon

any form of puzzle game is generally good. That should keep them busy for a while :)

I don't think To The Moon would suit little kids very well.

That was more aimed at the latter end of the scale. You are correct. The other two should be okay, though.

you capture innocent creatures in small captivities, use them as slaves to travel, to battle and loot money from random teenagers when you beat them in a battle.

Oh, if you can be bothered getting it to work on a W7 pc (use virtual machine or some other method), Logical Journey of the Zoombinis is great. I still play that every now and then!

my 6 year old brother loves surfing in tf2. Teaches him mouse control and as long as youve got voice and text off theres really no chance of experiencing anything inappropriate

honestly i'd install an n64 and gamecube emulator and let him have a proper childhood.

Donkey Kong 64
Banjo Tooie
Super Mario 64
Smash Bros

Luigi's Mansion
Pikmin

Also I'm convinced playing the shit out of tetris at a young age made me a genius.

Putt putt, Arthur & DW,jump start grade series, Freddie fish are great games for young kids.

Around 6 y/o my dad got me zoombinis, Lionel's train town and monkey island.

Sports and racing games aren't too bad either!
