Youtube to buy Twitch?

I don't see how this is that bad. It's pretty obvious that Google has given up on Google+. Admittedly, the copyright laws and stuff coming into play isn't great but I think it's a good trade off for getting what I assume will be a much better service. I'm quite excited that such a big company, outside of gaming in its main functions, is getting involved with eSports. The fact that Google own YouTube as well could be very good for twitch.tv if they handle it properly. Imagine the huge market of kids who watch YouTube xXxMLG-420xXx montages but have never watched a game on twitch.tv, if there is some kind of two way integration then twitch traffic will increase.

Google are much better equipped to handle how big twitch.tv is becoming. They have the ability to create a mobile app which is actually good... and I constantly hear of issues with streams lagging and VODs being a pain in the arse to watch because of how stupidly they load. (Imagine if VODs were automatically handled by Youtube?). Stuffs going to change no doubt, hopefully Google handle it well and their support benefits the eSports community as a whole.

(i hate the word eSports, but i couldn't think of a better one to use)

while the initial boost to bandwidth might be good, the google+ integration into chat and streaming is a definite. The main concern, however is google's heavyhanded contentID system that would ban nearly all copyrighted music and even some games (think of that one Day One garry's Incident game).

Plus monopolization of the video streaming market isn't good for viewers, streamers or chat users. It's really only beneficial for those making money off of it. A lack of competition will eventually drive Twitch to be a worse website as a whole, think of google's google+ with youtube disaster.

Hope this doesn't happen, only thing that wasn't good about twitch were the VOD's, and twitch would have worked on those eventually.

TotalBiscuit made some interesting comments on this topic. For those who are not immediately shaken of by dota2 footage, this might be worth a look.

They realize that the Google+ thing was stupid and did not work so why would them doing the same thing with Twitch be "a definite"? See also - http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/04/report-google-to-end-forced-g-integration-drastically-cut-division-resources/

yttriumUpsides:
  • Much better server backend, so we can finally save 1080p offline images
  • Probable Google+ integration for announcing you're streaming; could be seen as a downside
  • Way more processing power in that server backend - finally we might see encoding options for non-partners!
  • Another upside to the better server backend is that the 20s or more delay will probably be reduced to around 5 seconds or so, depending on how they handle it
  • Better mobile apps - the current apps are horrible
  • Might begin supporting WebM encoding, which means we could see HTML5 players/chat and better quality streams because of WebM's improved encoding over h.264

Downsides:
  • Possible shitty Google+ integration
  • Chat might become awful
  • More ads?
  • Might just get integrated with Google rather than staying its own site

For your upsides, I don't think those 1080 offline images matter that much. As for Google+ integration, that's just automatically a downside really, people already announce if they're streaming on FB or Twitter, and many truly dislike/hate Google+ in general. As for the better "mobile apps" I think if Twitch really tried, they can get a good working twitch app.
As for your downsides, chat is already awful, and if there was more ads, then that would encourage the use of more adblock users(which I hear is bad for the people trying to gain revenue from them).

This needs to be stressed

Google+ is NOT a definite and I certainly can't imagine it being forced. Do your homework folks.

I might be the only person in the world who likes google+

my team was going to cut me for the above statement.

I retract it.

I don't think Google will use Google+ on Twitch. They already know that Google+ is a failure after the Youtube backlash.
