i52 Donation Drive

While watching yesterdays Fully Charged, i was reminded of the upcoming i52, the next big European lan when it comes to TF2 and how the Americans are probably not gonna come (thank you for the wake up call Kaidus.. you dick) :D

I find it that there is definitely a lack of direction when it comes to organizing something. I am absolutely not here to criticize anyone, or say that i would do better, cause i know myself i wouldn't, but i do have a few ideas of the top of my head and in all honestly, if everyone was to help, it could be done.

The biggest people when it comes to organizing these kinds of events seem to be in my perspective: Admirable, Lange, Truktruk, Atmo, Huhy, and a few other people (it's far too early in the morning, if i honestly forgot anyone, i am honestly sorry).

Now, we just had the Tip of the Hats happen recently and what a fantastic event it was, from the fantastic production values, to the amount of hours of stream, and the number of people plugging in.

In my view, something on the same level would have to be done for the i52 Donation Drive.

In my personal opinion, the best way around it would be an Intercontinental Championship! It would essentially be the Teamfortress.tv Invitational Cup #3.

The way i see it, to make it last longer and more interesting it would have to involve both scenes (if not the Asian and Australian too), and it would be two tournaments happening in two separate days, one for each scene.

There are two ways around it which i am gonna be explaining now:

Each one day cup would be a typical Invitational where if you lose a match, you are thrown to the lower bracket. In the end, the team who wins the American Upper Bracket final goes on to meet the European Lower Bracket final contestant from the other cup, and the European Upper Bracket final goes to meet the American Lower Bracket final. From there, there would be the Grand Finals with the best team from both scenes.

The other way around it would be just running two separate Invitational tournaments, still where if you lose a match, you are thrown to the lower bracket. But instead, the Grand Finals winner of each tournament meets each other for an Intercontinental Match. Essentially bringing the emotions of seeing your favorite teams of each scene playing it out through the tournament, and after, having a climaxing Grand Finals with the best team of each continent.

With that said, it would have to have great production values, and in my personal view, i do believe it should be ran (run?) in multiple days to give it more hype, more build up, and more than anything, to allow it to have more time for the Donation itself.

I am quite literally no one in this scene and i couldn't possibly make it happen by myself but i am definitely willing to help with anything as i believe this would be the best scenario to make i52 happen the way everyone wants it to happen.

I would appreciate any feedback or criticism, but keep it positive and lets make this happen. Contact your favorite teams, casters, organizers and pester them with this thread :)

Thank you

Forgot about a major one, but if Twitch John was to help, then it would be even easier to plug more numbers on the stream, increasing our chances of a better drive.

tbh i think a lot of na players are trying to pool to get to gxl rather than get to europe again since gxl is looking to be the biggest north american tf2 lan thus far

the biggest factor you're missing throughout all of this is the sheer amount of funds it would actually require to send everyone there

i don't think it's worth it to try to make this a regular thing because it puts a large strain on everybody that gets involved for the meat of the donation drive (see: salamancer) and it's way easier to say that this is what we should do rather than actually doing it

That's something i didn't consider, how many teams should we be sending to i52 and.. should we even do such donation drive. Due to time constraints i don't follow NA as much as i would like, so i didn't know that GXL was looking to be the lan for all the NA teams, that's quite cool in itself.

What kind of costs would there be needed to literally just send one team to i52 if anyone's got an idea.

I honestly think you plugged at the right time, that seems to be the way around it. Everyone (am guessing) would love to see the Euros, the Muricas and the Aussies battle it out again, and i always thought i52 was the place for it to happen, but i guess i misjudged how big GXL was gonna be. If the Americans already have a lan set, with bigger numbers, more production, then it might be better for an European team to go.

As it is right now, considering what Kaidus said yesterday on Fully Charged, i52 would mostly consist of Epsilon, Epsilon and more Epsilon (mind you, i don't have the knowledge, so there might be teams in the making), so instead of bringing an american and aussie team to battle out a lot of teams that are clearly not their level just to be able to go one on one agains't Epsilon, might be better to send Epsilon to battle a few teams that could be on it's level in America.

If that was to happen, would sending Aussies to GXL be doable ?

Epsilon are the only team at the moment with the right sponsor that could potentially send them to NA (but i got no idea if they would or if they have the interest). I quite like the way this thread is going. It would probably be better tournament wise as Epsilon would be facing better opponents, and it would be finally the first TF2 lan in NA with the majority of the community.

It is true that NA has come to Europe twice, so in all fairness it could be better/easier to send just Epsilon.

Again, i don't know about the costs as Epsilon would have players from all over europe, and to my knowledge, the team isn't finalized yet.

iM have stated that they are planning on going to the next i series lan, and considering that flights to the UK would be more expensive, if GXL became the next big event then you wouldn't hear too many complaints from them about switching plans. But aporia would have to weigh in for the official word.

Some day you guys should all come to Respawn though. *pipedream

1) American team expresses interest in going.
2) You work out the cost it would take to bring those two teams to LAN.
3) Someone (eXtv, TF.TV or whoever) organises a fundraiser event with all the usual donation perks that were successful last year.
4) Awesome TF2 event.

Lot of kinks to work out in between but those are the basic stages, it starts with a team expressing interest in coming over. Only two teams worthy are Mixup (defending champions) and 4G so it's really on them.

I also find it amusing not 6 months ago with the ESEA drama people were saying it was not possible to have a US community LAN like the i-series, but now people are starting to believe.

Imo it doesn't matter if it's at the iseries or GXL but i'd so love to see the americans, aussies and the euros duke it out again on even grounds, whatever works best for the teams involved
i49 were some of the best matches TF2 has ever seen, would be a shame if it doesn't happen again in some form this year

I will donate to any European fund-raising drive to send a European team to GXL. I'm not TMA, but I'm sure a lot of other people feel the same way given how GXL is looking. Europe to New York flights are not too bad. GXL is only about 2 hours driving from New York.

How is this a matter of "it's your turn". I really can't find a lot of information on GXL, but what I can does nothing to suggest it's in any way worth spending 5000+ dollars on. Maybe i52 isn't either, but if one of them is then it's definitely the latter.

Also it's kind of a joke to say "we can't fund a team to i52 cause now we have our own lan". The funding for Americans to come to i46/49 came from Europeans as well as Americans; Europeans who also had broder, punchline, and other top teams to fund to i46/i49, as well as the 300 or so attendees that had to pay for themselves - many of which attended from overseas.

If no American team wants to go then it's a different matter and everything I'm saying should be completely ignored, but given GXL isn't even confirmed to be anything special yet (based on the post on this thread, like I said info seems scarce) I really don't see how it's a contest. Granted there is more time until GXL, but if it's a bust it may be too late to salvage something for i52 by the time you find out.

Edit: Just read there is no PC rental at GXL. Really don't see how this is going to be possible.

i52 in august, gxl in October, and an esea lan around that time as as well(Sept/Oct?). I feel like all three won't happen, so it will come down to whether the top teams want to build a good NA lan or go to Europe again.

Norway to Philadelphia plane trip will cost me ~400 USD roughly for both trips. It can get cheaper if its only to New York.

What other costs are there? can anyone enlighten me what the realistical costs of GXL are.

entry fee?
computer rent?
Hotel/place to stay and get cleaned up?

Clarification: there is some interest to organise a european team.

fair enough, it would be nice for NA to have its own iseries especially after all the talk before about how na tf2 would be dead without ESEA - but at the same time its not like we as a community can't do both (also as real teams, or that many, aren't going to GXL i don't see much need for fundraising there? unless you mean players themselves will be out of pocket and unable to donate to i52)

I see your point Kenneth, and your reasoning, but the reality is that if i52 doesn't happen and GXL does then we won't be attending... at least not the way we are now. I'll be in Moscow until the 11th of October, and its super unlikely that the team will want to play without me (particularly some of us), not to mention them finding the time & effort to actually organise the trip.

It's pretty much i52 or bust for us, but that doesn't mean that the community should feel pigeon holed into accommodating us either - if GXL is going to work better for everyone else, then there's no "obligation" to do i52 instead just so we can come.

Either way, the community needs to work out what they want soon - or it will be too late for us in either scenario - as I can't really justify organising i52 if there's unlikely to be a strong American team there as well.

Surely the US team can get enough funds for both lans? I would donate to both. The i series are the most exciting lan's where we get to see the best of the best play against each other, not just a lan where you know who's going to be in the final.
1 year is a long time to wait for another one where the level of competition may not be as high.

I guess I just want to see more amazing games like last year.
