If i have a 75hz monitor and I can run tf2 at about 300 fps, should I cap my frames and if I do, what should I cap it at?

as long as your frames stay below the thousands and you get no pitch/whine out of your GPU or unstable framerate, a cap isn't necessary, but I'd recommend something around 150-200 if you need one.

#5 wait, is that why my frames will drop from 150 (in a fight)/~280-300 (not in a fight) to around ~60 for a minute or two out of nowhere & quite a few times per game? i'm at 75hz w/o a cap. i might have read what you say wrong though.

this shit's been happening for at least a year now and there's no sign of what's causing it. it happens in some other games (most recent game i've experienced this with is on rust) but not all. anything that may have been causing it has been proven not the problem.

when my frames cap to 60 for a minute its because of steam community, set yourself to offline and see if it still happens

I'd try reinstalling Steam to fix the overlay, as it can bug the hell out when you mess with framerate/GPUs.
