If anyone who is proficient in math could help me with this i'd be super grateful. I just need to know what KIND of function this is so that I can find its equation via a graphing calculator.

Thanks

trogyeah, unless you're doing the combining functions unit I'm not sure what that would be. Are you sure you /need/ to find the equation?

yeah thats it, i think its a combination of a line with a exponential function cause im looking through my notes right now and im seeing something similar to it.

2cafik there's isn't a way to just know without more info, but im not sure how to get the exact equation for it.

im doing a project on felix baumgartners jump and i need to know the equation of this graph.

FYI, This is a function.

This is a function because

1) Every x has a corresponding Y

2) Because it passes the vertical line test

Also, this is a polynominal equation. As for finding the equation of the line, you need to find its zeros and work from there. I only know the calculus way, I am not sure how they do it in your class.

I strongly recommend looking at khan-academy for any math questions. It is very comprehensive.

well, i tried graphing it as a cubic function and it didnt fit. It just doesnt work out as a cubic function, which leads me to believe that it wouldnt work as a degree 4,5,6,7...∞ function. Imo the best and only way to graph this is a multiplication of a line function with an exponential function, however, I do not have the knowledge or ability to do this.

edit: by exponential function i mean exponential regression.

just by looking at it you can see that the waves aren't symmetric and that it cant purely be a trig function. I may be wrong but that is just what im seeing.

2chow would you not know this isnt some kind of funky trigonometric function?

The traditional trig functions have a much more uniform figure and they also oscillate. Most though, I am assuming that he isn't covering trig functions based on the way he asks the question.

SoapTry something like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mp55wMhgHtM

wont work though, its not that simple.

on top of that even if it did work i would need a concrete point that is not a zero or a y intercept i think.

Your calculator should be able to find the zeros and identify a clean point for you. On the TI calculators there are zero functions. Try wolfram Alpha if you get too desperate.

well from that all i can tell is that it's an odd 'n' function x^n

if you have to find the equation go for a cubic

ax^3+bx^2+cx+d

sub in the intercept, the turning point and a random poit

Give or take half way down the page is the source of the picture you posted. I'm not really sure what answer your instructor is looking for though. Its pretty clearly an x^n polynomial of some odd degree, but that doesn't sound like a very practical thing to figure out compared to how it was actually made in the blog post.

Well for my money I'd say it's either the difference of two exponential functions or a rational function

Like others said though it's hard to tell without more information

mach number is similar to G in the sense that 1 mach is one time the speed of sound, the speed of sound is around 330 m/s but it can vary based on the air surrounding the place where you are testing for the speed of sound.

and yes you are correct in that i am looking for what TYPE of function it is, thats the hard part, then finding its equation would be easy due to graphing calcs

I googled mach vs altitude and got this:

Looks pretty close to what you have there.

This question doesn't really make sense. Not all functions fit into some sort of classification (log, exp, quad, etc). Especially something like this where its values came from physical phenomena probably won't be exactly represented by something like a simple logarithmic or exponential.

One thing that may be of interest though:

flipperswell, i tried graphing it as a cubic function and it didnt fit. It just doesnt work out as a cubic function, which leads me to believe that it wouldnt work as a degree 4,5,6,7...∞ function.

Actually any function can be represented by an infinite series of powers i.e. a degree infinity polynomial. Look up Taylor Series. Some computational tools like wolframalpha or matlab might be useful in actually finding an expression for the taylor series.

If you don't want to look at taylor series, consider the trends of the graph. For values below 30000 it is increasing, but then after that some other term becomes more dominant and pulls it asymptotically to -inf just before 40000.

All of that said, I'm pretty sure you're approaching the problem in the wrong way, since finding the exact function of an arbitrary graph seems a little ridiculous to me.
