FPS capping at 60 randomly?

Recently, I've been getting awfully unstable fps, and tons of stuttering. I've had my computer for about half a year and haven't had any problems with fps whatsoever, no matter what config I'm running, maxframes or not. Now I can barely run maxframes.

I usually get 300-200 fps constant, but randomly it will drop and "cap" at 60 for a few seconds, which is extremely noticeable and annoying. Anyone have any idea what might be going on?

safrixMight be a config problem or a vsync problem or tf2 being tf2.

Probably should mention that I have 2 monitors running, one is 144hz and one is 60hz, could that be it?

Vsync is one thing that could be limiting FPS, but it sounds weird that it is randomly dropping at times, for a few seconds.

I always have this if my steam connection goes offline and online again.
That caps my fps at 60 for a few seconds.

Are you running any other programs/videos/games or whatever on a secondary monitor and it's playing? It happened to me with my 144 and other 60hz monitor, FPS will cap if I'm playing a video that's 30fps or 60 or whatever.

While I am playing on a shitty laptop I have the same problem, sometimes.
Though my fps drops to exactly 25 instead, lol.

I, just like dob, have this happening once steam tries to reconnect after losing connection to the community at random moments. Usually when my net is under heavy use by other people in the house.

However it could also be your guys computers overheating because they are filled with dust collecting heat? (It's just a wild guess but try cleaning out the fan etc, check to make sure your net is working smoothly etc.)

My mate had this problem on her new windows 8 laptop.

Thing kept having vsync turning on and off at random intervals.

It may not solve your problem but we solved ours by switching tf2 between dx 9, 8, full screen and windowed. Then it stopped weirdly enough.

I think you might be right. if i remember, it tended to happen when steam tries to reconnect. i'll take notice of this next time it happens.
