Wow, that looks like an awful idea. The guy who made that obviously isn't an engineer.

That thing has "driver could not be found" written all over it.

If something is only interesting, and not practical, what's the point of it? >_>

Don't think that'd work when you attempt to develop something like this and request funding for it.

my friend brought this up to me, also saying it was interesting, but my immediate reply was "that is fucking dumb and will never work."

yukiIf something is only interesting, and not practical, what's the point of it? >_>

And we're playing a game where the hats are only interesting, not practical.

RIP Set bonuses.

Anyways, I'm surprised this hasn't been done more often. I would figure that it'd be very practical for certain people to be able to easily swap a few parts around and make it difficult to trace the device as a whole. If anything else this is a nice proof-of-concept, I just can't imagine the general public wanting to mess with a Kerbal-style cell phone.

Did you read the second part of my post?

Also, I'm clearly referring to almost anything in the real world that is to have a 'PRACTICAL use'. Good thing you just compared vanity items in a videogame to a device that's practically a portable computer.

im sure its not news to anyone that computers/phones are not built on bread boards. but something like this is possible. and if you watch this video thinking that this is some guys idea of the final version i really have nothing to say to you. this isnt legoland. this is integrative thinking that deserves to be encouraged.

I think although his implementation is pretty ridiculous, I think there is no reason why phones couldn't have standardised components like PCs. I would like to have the option of increasing the amount of ram/flash memory my phone has, and I think it's possible.

There's this interesting thing that happens with ideas. Let's say billy has an idea. He posts about it on teamfortress.tv. The first few posts go along the lines of "Hey, that's cool!" and "I want one!" But it doesn't last forever. Soon someone realizes the idea isn't perfect, there's a flaw in the design(!). Then another post like that comes along. Then another. And another. Soon every single post either echos the mistakes already pointed out or directly insults the poster.

So billy's saying "Hey wait a minute. What happened to my idea?" Sorry billy, your idea wasn't perfect. And because it wasn't perfect we've decided the whole idea is stupid. Why would you even think of something like that? Are you stupid?

I guess it doesn't really matter, just something I have found to be fairly universal.

I don't see why everyones so upset about a new phone concept. I think it's a neat idea. Definitely does have practical applications. Field workers carry a work and personal cellphone all the time. I absolutely despise how much money phone companies charge for the "all new" phones.

With the drop rate I currently have on my phone I would be losing battery and camera blocks just about everywhere I go. Would go phoneless in a couple of days.

Ultimately it comes down to the eternal conflict of product vs platform that has existed ever since computers became a commercial venture as opposed to an academic one.

The average user doesn't want a platform, they want a product. Platforms require you to know things and work out how to use them, but a product JustWorks(TM). The fact that the designer clearly has an eye for a visuals and a product design background, but is missing this key issue, is pretty odd.

if this was a campaign on indiegogo I'd think he was crazy, but he isn't asking for money, just for people to help share his idea.

it is innovative thinking and just because an implementation like in the video won't ever happen, doesn't mean it is useless and a complete waste of time

Not really, the reason why it got so viral is because it has visuals. You can do "innovative thinking" all you want, but unless you can do animations and have a nice presentation you won't get the kind of response he got. If this was a blog post, it wouldn't have gotten anywhere.

So kids, make sure you learn how to present things. This is a great example of how to sell something to the general public.

why are you so upset about this just let it go

brownymasterd0m3rwhy are you so upset about this just let it goWhy are you so defensive? I was countering his point that it being "innovative thinking" isn't something special, it's just the visuals that make people interested. And I generally think it's negative to have these things spread because it can lead to false expectations of people (ie CSI). This leads to a waste of time if people buy into it.

BTW, you honestly took the responses to this thread way to personally. Most people were addressing the guy in the video, but it honestly seems like you feel like you're being attacked in this thread. You posted something a lot of engineers (which there are quite a few on this forum) didn't like, and have negative feedback about the video. Don't take it personally.

no not at all you just seem to want to see this idea burn in a fire when its a interesting topic of what a phone could be like you just completely deny any creative credit to the designer id like to see you come up with something nearly as creative or "innovative" this guy never wanted any money just people to share his idea and all you do is deny and recognition where its needed

The guy who created this basically said," I love how you can upgrade and customize your pc with whatever graphics card, cpu, ram, case, etc" and purposed using that same system with a phone. Im really confused as to why people think this is so groundbreaking when its really been going on with a bunch of things for awhile now. Eventually the phone would get to the point where the "motherboard" would become faulty/outdated and you'd have to buy a new one at some point anyway to be able to increase its performance. I mean it'd be cool to be able to customize your cell phone like you can with a pc, it would just be really difficult for a company to accomplish with how small and complicated phones are becoming.

brownymasterd0m3rno not at all you just seem to want to see this idea burn in a fire when its a interesting topic of what a phone could be like you just completely deny any creative credit to the designer id like to see you come up with something nearly as creative or "innovative" this guy never wanted any money just people to share his idea and all you do is deny and recognition where its neededHoly run-on sentence. I think phones that had interchangeable parts like a computer motherboard could be great, which is a step down from what he's trying to do. That's fine. It's just a bit absurd to announce lego phones without researching or addressing design issues for something like that.

so we agree

i guess the difference is i took the video at face value as a concept with no actual engineer design work put into it

and you took it as an announcement of a future product, perhaps this is how it was intended but I didn't see it that way

it is certainly very impractical, maybe even impossible as shown, but when im at work, me and my coworkers take turns bouncing ideas that will never work and it gets our brains turning in different directions and we eventually come up with a solid design

it's a good idea.

unfortunately, companies want to sell an entire phone instead of just one piece so they can make more money.

Obviously there's a lot of parts to this idea that suck and make no sense.

However, the PC equivalent of a Phone (e.g. can't literally freely change it however you want, but can upgrade specific parts as you need them yeah) would be neat...maybe.
