I tense up a lot when I play. When I play MGE my shoulder starts to hurt from how tense I have my right arm (mouse hand). I've been trying to relax and correct myself when I notice Im tensing up and it seems to help my flick shots and tracking. Does anyone else get this when they play, especially MGE or DM?

I dont mean tense emotionally but physically. I literally make my arm stiff its weird. I end up getting sore after a few hours.

I had that issue a long time ago. Sucks. Use your wrist to play and move on.

Exercise, play when you're awake and alert. Stretch your arms, do simple gestures and movements to make sure you have coordination when playing a game to train on. I found that was my biggest issue, I got myself into bad habits because I'd constantly play whenever I was dead tired but just wanted to put in some time to maintain a consistent level. You're also probably putting too much focus on moving your mouse to where you want it to go using the wrong part of your arms and forcing yourself when it's not natural. Causing yourself to jerk your arm in the tiniest motions (from what I've found) is making your arm feel stiff. I'll bet money that you probably feel you're constantly trying to keep up with your target, rather than staying with your target enough to make good predictions on what he/she needs to do next, then beat him to the punch. From the countless hours of DM and trying to find that "rule" to abide by so I can better myself in every fight; however it just simply doesn't exist. The "rule" would be along the lines of changing yourself to adjust to the flow of the fight and making sure you get the next step against your opponent. I've come to the conclusion that you must try to be as relaxed as possible while taking in as much information as possible then acting on it. From doing this, I've found myself removing the fatigue of focusing on technical skills 24/7.

Tensing up in things like MGE where you have the linear one on one scenarios, I felt a lot of my tensing a long time ago started from me thinking too much about what that other player would think of me. This resulted in me just trying to win mge, rather than trying to win a real duel in different scenarios to try somethign new, regardless of the outcome. Once I got in with the new, I started to see real progress and felt completely fine fucking up royally.

Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and shake out your arm a bit. Swing your mouse around in wide strokes a few times, then go back to playing. When you die, you might feel yourself do it again, just start from the beginning. Helps me a lot.

Definitely happens to me too and I remember seeing someone like Lange talk about how this happens to new players. I guess we just have to learn to be more outcome independent.

I was thinking that maybe it has to do with my sensitivity. When I use lower sensitivity I have to be loose so I can move my arm freely, but I use a low sensitivity atm. I use about 4"/360 and I think im afraid to move my hand, kind of like im playing the game operation lol.

For the record, 4"/360 is generally referred to as a high sensitivity.

What class are you playing? I main soldier and don't suffer from this with my 3.5"/360, however, when I go to MGE and play as scout (with the same sens) versus other scouts after a little bit the right side of my hand/pinky starts to hurt since I am gripping my mouse so hard and trying to keep my aim stable so I can strafe and hit try to hit meatshots more reliably.

I know lowering my sensitivity would probably fix this, but I hate changing my sens between classes. Maybe you should try lowering sens.

#15, I hope you purposely changed the spelling of Odysseus.

Also, sensitivity doesn't matter, as long as you are comfortable with what you are using. My solider sens is like 5"/360, but my scout is 13"/360. It helps with tracking and flick aim. If you are comfortable with your sens, don't change it.

Well with a lower sens you're not going to be so tense (like if you're playing scout or whatever)...I'm talking about mainly MGE where you are doing constant 1v1 strafe battles with other scouts for maybe an hour or two.

And yeah, about a decade ago when I was 12 I came up with this name, guess I must've heard it somewhere and thought it was cool, it was my best guess at spelling it and I prefer it this way...it stuck.

Trekkiejerking off is probably the best advice in here

I might have to say it's the worst advice actually. Jerking off, especially to porn, which is the only way you jerk off I'm sure, will lead to a dopamine addiction. Essentially this causes your brain to believe that its fantasies are better than reality, and so you are taken out of the moment. It's why jacking off a lot leads to ADD-like symptoms. Next time you have a wack try and pay attention to how you feel after. You'll probably notice you're unfocused, feeling euphoric, kind of thing.

I used to have a huge problem with sweating and getting tense in both social situations and in video games. Both of which I've nearly completely overcome now by meditating daily. Just plain mindfulness meditation will help wonders. All you have to do it sit down comfortably, and breathe in and out. Most people like to focus on their breath, I like to focus on nothing at all. Whenever your mind wonders, just acknowledge it and bring it back to your breath/nothing. The purpose of meditation like this is to keep you aware and in the moment. You won't sweat, you won't be tense, your reaction time improves and your reactions are better. It even lowers your blood pressure, and some other crap I don't care about.

If you are looking for immediate relief and calmness, go along with this video.

I still do this before any matches to make sure I stay calm, and often do the breathing exercise whenever I die.
