Ubuntu is making a high end phone and want to crowdfund it for $32 million.
http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ubuntu-edge

What do you guys think of it?
I would love to have one but $600 or $830 seems really expensive

That's a really unrealistic number unless they get Lange to do stream marathons for it.

They're one tenth of the way there. Also, "This campaign will only receive funds if at least $32,000,000 is raised by Wed 21 Aug 11:59PM PT."

now that the most popular option is sold out it might slow

few want to pony up $830 or $10,000 which leaves $20 and $80,000. I don;t think enough people will care about it for the $20 option to be enough so it depends on if enough businesses invest in the 80k. They probably should have gotten some venture capital money (i dunno if they did try or not), 32 million is a lot to crowd source for such a device that only nerds will appreciate

I would absolutely love to be wrong I just don't see it happening without quite a few 80k perks selling.

edit: would be more along the lines of angel investors than venture capital

If you watch the entire main video, he says near the end how they realize 32 million is a little but ridiculous for crowd funding.

I think they are fully aware what you guys are pointing out, as the only people who get the phones are those who donate (essentially purchase). If enough people want it, they get it. If not, well then the phones dont get made.

Also, the video of the girl talking about the OS is hilarious, how do you miss putting makeup on one eye?

Thirty Two Million Dollars and Zero Cents

For that crowdfunding price tag, I want to see this thing bring about the messiahs for the major religions.

After two weeks of unprecedented sunshine on the British Isles I can see how that would be traumatic!

The Ubuntu Edge, or a phone similar too it, may actually finally interest me in a smart phone. Full functionality, to the point its almost a mobile workstation. Open enough to play with, use the terminal for things like apt-get, modify the open source code (not that I personally would, but the idea that I COULD is appealing.)....Linux on the phone would be amazing.

That said, 32 mil? Shuttleworth, you are truly out of your fucking mind.

sorry, for $830 OFF CONTRACT i need to see your actual device -- and know that it is not going to suck.

also, 1mm / day is a tremendous amount.

i wish them the best of luck, but doubt they hit the 32mm mark...

I believe they're not sticking to hardware as to not pull an Ouya. They're just saying "We'll put the fastest sum-bitch on the market at time of release".
