ksh0tbrownymasterAlgebra has so many everyday applications it's not even funny. But I guess it's because you and your friends are young and they might not be doing well (and I was a math team nerd). No we are out of school have been for a good year there just saying that they dont use it anymore

What do they do for a living and what do they do for fun? I mean I know friends in dining and stuff that still use algebra to calculate out their pricing and finances and stuff (it's basic algebra, but still algebra).

Doesn't matter. Grind it into your brain so you don't have to relearn it.

Math/Algebra is infinitely useful, and anyone who says otherwise is probably an idiot.

One is in law school and the other one is a party planner which I know requires algebra. We usually just hang out and drink for fun lol

ksh0tI mean unless your going into a feild that requires you to understand it do you really need it?

I'm working with homeless people, families that have financial problems, young people who didn't find work and such people. No need of it at all...

A lot of the advice you are getting here is from people already in high school / college. So your going to get a biased opinion on the matter because they are required to learn algebra in order to get wherever their going school wise.

If your asking is algebra used everyday when you have a career and are finished with school. Depending what field you are in is what will determine that. Depending what you do ...you will probably only use algebra two times a year in your life IF that, IT is not an EVERYDAY thing you will be using like some of the people here are suggesting, that's just complete nonsense. Basic mathematics on the other hand you will be using everyday.

Should still learn it though, another bullet for your gun can't hurt.

Outside of school, I don't use algebra everyday. Probably every other day.

A lot of math I do in my head for "every day tasks" is actually algebra, I just don't actually write it out with variables.

Fact is pretty much every specific topic you learn in school is useless in real life.

American history...
The correct form for throwing a javelin...
How to titrate a solution of Aspirin...

Another fact is every single one of those things WILL be useful AT SOME POINT. Being able to re-arrange equations has proven useful to me a lot of times in the past.

Chucking the javelin helped me when I wanted to murder the post man.
American history helped me when I watched Malcolm X
Titrating the solution of aspirin...ermmm, oh no, sorry, that one was a bit useless.

Knowledge is power and algebra isn't that difficult and damn useful. Learn dat shit.

I stopped going to highschool in the middle of 10th grade, going to get my GED soon, no immediate plans for college.

I use algebra at least on a day to day basis, and I have to sit down and work with the numbers on paper around once a week. Anyone who says that they never use it probably lives a compulsive and boring life (this is actually from my experience with people), and people who do, don't do it just because of their education path.

Algebra is pretty important. You need college level algebra (at least) for pretty much all college degrees (even associates degrees).

kaceThe basis of algebra is solving for variables. Let's use a TF2 example: you're playing soldier and you come across another soldier with little particles flying out of him indicating that he is buffed somewhat. By luck, you fire 3 rockets and they do a total of 230 damage. At the same time he fires 4 rockets and knocks you down to 20HP. Now, you only have time to fire that one rocket before he switches to his shotgun and finishes you off. With your final rocket are you going to a) go for the direct and most likely miss or b)hit him with splash definitely?

Algebra precipitates a fundamentally logical approach to every situation.

I choose c, aim my rocket at his feet, maximizing my chances of doing direct damage, and if I miss I still do maximum splash.

algebra 2ez

mesmath is p important my nig, english not so mch f heh

I haven't used the specific concepts I learned in algebra for years, but I like to think it makes me a better thinker overall. And all I do is write papers and analyze writing all day.

funny you say that because logic is actually my best mental faculty but no, apparently, having the experience that anyone i've met who goes out of their way to say that they never use algebra is also incredibly compulsive and boring, makes me bad at logic

btw homeschooling is a thing

How is that even remotely close to what you said before?

Making absolute statement is probably one of the most illogical and ignorant way of supporting an argument. That's like me saying if you are bad at tf2, you must be one of the most pathetic human being in the world

Any computer science/engineer majors here do you apply math or had to take a math course at collage? I know you need a basic understanding algebra for variables but what about calculus?

Also even though Aleks is a terrible program, (my god its bad) it has some use and i recommend using it if your having issues with math.

Good reading comprehension! My original statement "Anyone who ... probably ..." is semantically equivalent to "People who ... usually ...". So, no way in hell it's absolute. It's also the proper observation to* draw from the experience I've had.

It is the lowest form of math that absolutely everyone on the planet should be able to do. Any lower and you just won't be able to get by in society as successfully. Higher isn't necessary for most people in every day life.

You're going to be taking a lot of math courses if you plan on doing CS. A Calc series is just the beginning.

lol you need a lot of math for computer science. My CS major friends had to take 3-4 semesters of calculus, and linear algebra, stats, and differential equations. Plus all the math involved in normal CS classes.

I'm an electrical engineer (same department as computer engineers here, our first 2 years are basically identical), had to take 6 math classes plus 3 more stats-ish classes. You will have to re-take the ones you did in high-school, but it's a LOT easier with a bit of a head start.

Almost everything in engineering involves algebra in some way, as well.
