Steamwebhelper lag

Hi friends

Recently my gaming experience has been made significantly less fun by random but frequent stutters that last for a second or two. I've managed to narrow down the culprit to steamwebhelper which will spike my cpu to 100% usage for no apparent reason. I'm not the only person who has been experiencing this either as the internet has reported the issue as have some of my steam friends.

Things I've tried to remedy.

  • Disable steam overlay whilst ingame
  • Disable/enable all the settings under 'interface' within steam
  • Put -no-browser in my launch options
  • Reinstall steam, update, opt into/out of beta, verify cache etc etc...
  • Prayed everynight to the old gods and the new

The only thing that seems to make a difference is making the priority low on task manager but that only half solves the problem as it cannot (to my knowledge) be stopped completly if you still want to use steam. If anybody has a fix or something else to try I'd gladly take the advise, thanks :3

Same. Sometimes you can simply close it using the task manager and that will solve the issue without crashing TF2. New webhelper apps will open back up but hopefully they don't lag you out to the same degree

Yeah I used to fix this by disabling the steam overlay, guess they had an update and it still runs now? Really annoying during gameplay

:You might need -console next to -no-browser in your steam target options

idk if you've tried this

Sadly that's not the answer, once done it removes all functionality from Steam for me. I'm fairly certain you need to have it enabled which is why just ending the task in task manager does nothing.

i know you said you tried this, but only disabling "enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views" in the interface settings and leaving the other options as they were fixed it for me.
Maybe this will fix it for others aswell coming across this thread.

you can open mini game list in the top left of the steam browser in the view section theres an option called small mode.
And if you wanna switch back you can just click large mode. Idk how much it would fix the problem though cause i've been having the same issue even with it.

What fixed it for me was disabling in game overlay and putting "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe" -no-browser in my Run window and that completely killed any "Steam Client Webhelper" instances in my task manager. I'm pretty sure that they were my steam chats, as anytime someone messaged me on steam and the window popped up, I'd get fps drops and another "Steam Client Webhelper" would appear in my task manager. Doing the -no browser thing turned all my steam chats into the dated looking chat windows:

Show Content

which I assume is what fixed it.
